In the second part of this extended interview with Real Media, Professor Bev Skeggs speaks about surveillance capitalism.
With the fast roll-out of "pre-emptive surveillance" gadgets, the internet of things, and wearable tech, we are entering an age where huge non-transparent corporations, paying little or no tax, are supplying information to employers and insurance companies to control, monetise and rate every action we take.
Regulation so far has failed to foresee any of this, and we need to start waking up to what is happening and making democratic choices to reign it in.

She's the second in a few days that Ive come across who's talking about this subject: surveillance capitalism. Shoshana Zuboff is the other one and the author of The Age of Surveillance Capitalism.

She is not the second you have come across --- she is the second which was fed to you due to surveillance capitalism.

The more we allow AI into our lives, the more we become subservient to corporate power and big governments.

If it turns out that the data becomes more valuable for destroying peoples' lives and taking a cut of the auction profits from the scavenged remains, what is there to prevent that from becoming business as usual? It is much easier to calculate destructive algorhythms than beneficial ones. Things tend to take the path of least resistance when big piles of scarce resources are up for grabs. I don't understand this optimistic view of tech dependence. Nothing but a very hard lesson will come of it.

Correct diagnosis. Tragically wrong solutions.

This sounds crazy, actual bankers and accountants do these jobs. Networks are irrelevant, financial data is too sensitive for tech companies to have anything to with it.
