Minecraft is barely a survival game, I dislike when people assign it that title haphazardly when it only barely meets the criteria. The reason it is popular isn't because it is a survival game it is a sandbox game.
I suppose that is true now that you mention. When the game was in alpha I guess everyone just called it survival and it stuck? But as survival games went on I'd like to think survival got better defined and calling minecraft a survival game in comparison does seem a little silly now a days

@@JoofStudios that simply does not matter when the requirements to survive are so minuscule. There is an abundance of food in minecraft, there is no thirst requirement or other things that need to be taken care of other than protection. My point still stands. A game can still be sandbox oriented with survival elements
Not being able to have fun in an open word / sandbox style game is entirely a personal problem, survival based or not; If you're given free reign to make your own story, set your own goals and play at your own pace and still struggle to have fun that's no fault of the game and definitely no fault of an entire genre.
I do see where your coming from, but there are a couple that I do like, my issues though are consistent across survival games as a whole, it's when devs go out of there way to address the common status quo that the game will then hook me, all the stuff that survival games have done worked years ago, but I think I just want more varied experiences
It seems adding personal goals might help you enjoy them again. I had a similar issue, once you've explored and experienced most of a game the wonderlust fades leaving the game with less to offer you than it once did. This is completely normal but is still only a personal issue rather than being a fault of the game or genre. I hadn't played minecraft in about a decade but got a few months game pass free and decided to have a nostalgia trip on it, The magic it once had was gone but for old times sake I set a few goals and I've really been enjoying it. Never mind what the devs want or what the meta is; The best part of a sandbox game is that YOU control the game. Give it a go next time you're on one. Hope it brings some of the joy back for ya
