This is the 4th video of my series to track my recovery from Achilles Tendon Rupture. I ruptured my Achilles tendon while playing soccer.
This video talks about things I learned during the 5-6 week after surgery of Achilles Tendon rupture. In the video, I talk about the huge difference between vacoped and aircast, how I start reducing heel lift, how I understand and do weight bearing, all the rehab exercises I am doing, etc.
Hey it's Yulong. I am making a series of videos to document things I learned from my Achilles Tendon rupture that I didn't see anywhere else mentioned. I got a lot of useful information and mental support from videos of other rupture patients so I wanna do the same, hoping my videos could help others too.
Feel free to drop comments if you have any questions and I will be happy to answer!
My timeline:
1/17/2023 - Injury
1/24/2023 - Surgery
2/7/2023 - Switch from splint to cast
2/17/2023 - Switch from cast to vacoped

I would recommend doing these exercise at week 12 onwards to prevent elongated tendon.

Yo dude, Thanks for the video. It seems like you're on the right track. The process really sucks and it forces a young man, like you and myself, to be patient and care for ourselves. My timeline is a bit irresponsible compared to yours, so please read forward to what I will say. I ruptured my left the last week of March. I had surgery a couple days after and was splinted for 2 weeks. Then I was on a boot with raised wedges for 7 days. I wasn't able to go to physical therapy, so I took matters into my hands, but went wrong. I began to dorsiflex too early and started walking without my boot 2 weeks ago. Long story short, thats not ideal and I'm trying to see how I can make up for an elongated achilles tendon. I'm on week 6 post-op, so we're not far off from each others timeline. Wishing you a speedy recovery and here to support you man. Shits tough.

thanks and sorry to hear the elongated tendon! Def discuss with your doc for a treatment about that. Hope you recover from it and become stronger and better.
@LuizPretti-ns4oe
@LuizPretti-ns4oe Год назад
@@michaelenzo I began walking without my boot when I should've been wearing "raised wedges". The boot w/ wedges supports your foot in plantarflexion, but I started walking barefoot and eventually with my vans because I wasnt feeling pain. Walking too early can reduce the strength of the tendon pulling the calf because you are elongating it when it should be repairing its firmness. Hope that made sense brother.

@@iamyulong Thanks man, check out something called ATRA achilles. It's the resting angle that your achilles is supposed to be at. Learning this was the main source of discovery for my negligence. I went back to wearing raised wedges and will see my ortho in about 10 days to see if it adjusted the error. Hope you're doing good too man. Keep posting.

I was in a cast for 4 weeks, I have been in a boot for 3 days and I can't move my ankle at all. Even moving my toes is a struggle. I'm a long way behind. My doctor gave me instructions not to bare weight so I'm strictly on crutches.
@iamyulong
@iamyulong Год назад
hi 4 weeks is still very very early. If you have doubts about your movement def check with your doctor. I remember moving ankle is hard for me too early on, mostly because the connection between calf, tendon and heel are not there anymore, they need to be rebuilt from rehab exercise

Hi Yulong! I’m have my ACT surgery on 4/9/23 15/9/23 remove cast and stitches Wearing air cast now for walking with 25% of my weight with clutches Now is coming 3rd week I’m not sure if the air cast is to wear at all times and only remove for shower and sleep. Or I need to wear at all times My calf muscle now is weak, not sure what I can do. My next doctor appointment is on 29/9/23
@iamyulong
@iamyulong 10 месяцев назад
Hi great seems you are making solid progress! I think there's no rules around wearing aircast at all times, but people usually do that especially in early stage to avoid accidentally tripping or hitting on the healing tendon. I personally only take it off during shower starting around week 5-6. For calf I believe your doctor will walk thru your rehab protocol which most likely would have you work with a physical therapist to regain the muscle. Hanging there - the recovery takes time!

Question man - did you have to wear insoles in your shoes when you started walking again / doing physical activity?

I put a in-shoe heel lift there when I started wearing regular shoes until I'd say about 11-13 weeks post op

Hi there, may I ask for how long you would have to wear the boot when sleeping?
@iamyulong
@iamyulong 6 месяцев назад
prob until 8-9 weeks is when I started sleeping without the boots, and then get rid of it for good around 10-11 weeks after surgery
@olakunleadewaleadegbile5301
Hello. Week 4 u said u started partial weight bearing, when post op did they remove the cast and let you use the boot, also when were you able to start cleaning the affected leg? Thanks.
@iamyulong
@iamyulong Год назад
they removed my cast and put me in boots in week 4, and that's also when I was able to clean my injured leg
@olakunleadewaleadegbile5301
@@iamyulong Thanks, seems to be most. Especially based on recent short term studies. I've seen almost 10 or so. Mine they removed first soft cast about 4 weeks. I was facing the exam bed, and stitches were removed. I thought site would be cleaned, but immediately started putting hard cast on to be there for 3 more weeks. They said 6 weeks, but will actually be 7 since no 6 week appointment. It also appears it's their policy whether you're 65 or 25. So almost 2 months not being able to clean the injury site. Things for the VA here are a bit different 🤔 I can't follow their lead.
@iamyulong
@iamyulong Год назад
@@olakunleadewaleadegbile5301 yeah the protocol varies across places, I've seen some others even have cast removed after first week so it all depends on the surgeon.

@@danielmartinezsouthwesthom8574 I find it helpful to walk over a scale and find out how much weight bearing I need to put on injured leg to walk freely. that way gives me a clear goal in my mind. other than that just try to walk as much as you could - if you haven't walked for a while your muscle might need some reactivation so every step you take is a good exercise to your body - you need both weight bearing and those muscle for you to walk in normal pose
