The $4 haircut was a lot more thorough than what I'd get at a typical discount salon. We would call the expensive haircut a spa treatment. That's a pretty good price for all of that.

I had a haircut when I lived in Japan. The old man cutting my hair asked how I'd like my hair cut, and I said short. Before he started, he patted my hair, then started running his fingers through my hair. He did it for a about a minute or so, then asked me in Japanese if I was Chinese. I told him my Grandparents are from China but moved to Vietnam. I was impressed that he could tell just by feel and he said Japanese hair is very thick and dry but my hair was straight smooth and soft.

Interesting that at the end I would say both cuts were worth the money. If you just needed a haircut the first shop did exactly what was needed. But if you want the whole personal grooming experience then the second option didn't seem as outrageously priced after learning all that comes with it. BTW I just got home from my $29 haircut ($5 tip, its America) that was pretty much like the $4 cut.

I am based abroad but I'm currently in Japan since the beginning of this month, and I didn't have my hair cut since Christmas. I was patiently waiting to get my hair cut in Japan, and even though I only paid 3000 yen (basically the same I'd pay back home), I got a good haircut, they did my eyebrows and even offered me a shave (which I politely turned down since I don't have much facial hair anyway). I also love how they'd always consult with you what you want, and offer suggestions based on that. I just love the Japanese service, and how they treat each and every hair cut in such a professional manner, instead of just rushing it, so it was totally worth the wait.

It's awesome, glad I didn't miss out :D I would personally much prefer the cheap haircut since I feel really awkward when people go overboard with the "special customer" experience - the hairdresser doing the cheap cut was so nice and so dedicated and seemed really down to earth. Also, I could get my hair cut every week and not go broke! The expensive one is a great deal for all the services frankly, but it also seems really overwhelming. I feel like i'd rather do one of those per day so I can truly focus and enjoy them.

I saw a huge cake / cookies shop right off Akihabara subway station where people line up to buy $200/lb cookies that look exaclty as $4/lb cookies in the convenience stores. So, I am still curious whether it's really worth the price difference? Like what can possibly explain 100 TIMES price difference for the same cookies and the same matcha cakes?
