As a non-pilot, and someone who doesn't even play flight sim video games, I was just curious about spins and how a pilot recovers. This is so well explained that I feel like even I've grasped the basics of the mechanics of what is going on. Great job!

Instead of stalling the wing first do we get in to stall with only banking the wing left/right and giving full rudder left/right....do we need to really stall the aircraft to get into spin.

I agree, when students think they know it all this is for them. When pvt pilots think they know it all and they usually do they should look at this twice.

This is by FAR the most important video for any student pilot(Pilot period). We always hear about the base to final spin but no one ever demonstrates what can happen. Especially once you get that private pilot cert, whats the first thing you wanna do, go fly your friends. Huge thanks for this video!!

What i fear is that unless we practice recovering all the time, we'll get surprised in the emergency and do the wrong thing. That's why I'm considering taking some aerobatic classes. Not so much because I enjoy flipping around, but because I want to be proficient in recovering from those weird situations and don't want to be enveloped by panic.

Just did my CFI spin endorsement yesterday, and I swear - this video helped me more than I can describe. I watched it over and over, even rehearsed trying to sound cool and calm while reciting the PARE steps - and it worked! Multiple fully developed spins both sides in a Citabria (including an over-the-top spin) with me doing my super calm Jon imitation - I knew exactly what to do and when. Thanks a million, this was EXCELLENT pre-spin endorsement training!

Unlike a lot of videos that just describe a skidding "base-to-final" turn and the resultant spin you actually talk about how to recover before it develops. Great video, thanks!

I think its important to note that not all aircraft are built the same. This one is quite forgiving but some aircraft there will be no warning. No chance at recovery. If you turn base to final and go into stall skid config the airplane will just fall out of the sky and 500 ft will not be enough room to recover. There will be no stall horn or buffeting it will just snap into a spin and game over. Know your aircraft and its handling characteristics.

It might be good to distinguish between a stall -> spin and a stall -> dive. They can both happen shortly after take-off and if a pilot enters a stall->dive and thinks it's a spin, he might spend the few seconds that he has messing with the right rudder when he could have sticked his way out of it.

I"m amazed you can talk so clearly and think about all of this while in a spin. I mean I don't fly except years of X-Plane and MSFS but wow.

MSFS can certainly be helpful, but NOTHING takes the place of good old stick and rudder flying, i.e., "flying by the seat of your pants!" Every pilot who depends on autopilot should have to do seat-of-the-pants (stall/spin) reviewing (besides just a BFR) every so often! Some airline pilots (usually not American) couldn't land a plane without autopilot or glidescope if they had to. Accidents have proved that, (Asiana Fl. 214 is a good example).

Once you have performed a couple spin recoveries you realize that it is not as crazy scary as it may seem. Airplanes are designed to want to fly. Its us as pilots that perform control imputs that cause the airplane to stop flying in most situations and conversely some simple control imputs such as "p.a.i.r." power to idle, ailerons to neatural etc etc ..... will always make the airplane start to fly again. I say always with my teeth gritted. Lol

wow, x-plane and MSFS are really good tools. MSFS 2020 is unbelievable for spin training.it's like being in the real thing with VR glasses on. Flight Sim is so much more advanced now.

Remember all stalls and spins should be completed in a "climb". Spins and stalls intentionally done at high altitude are not dangerous, if done correctly. But if you should accidentally enter and successfully recover at an unsafe altitude, you should finish in a climb. That's what I was taught by an FAA inspector who taught me aerobatics in a Decathlon many years ago. It appears the pilot in this video did just that.

Dude this helped me so much. I have just done two days of spin training and my god it was scary at first but I nailed It today after reading up and being more prepared as well as watching this video. I wish I could get a few hours tuition with you. You're awesome!! My instructors are great too it is worth mentioning but I really like your teaching style and the way you explain things. Glider pilots are required to practise spin recovery and it's saved my life at least once. Your emphasis on rudder for recovery is simply spot on, lift the dropping wing with rudder, basic. So very glad you covered the issue where a pilot spins off a turn into final by trying to drag the aircraft in with back stick and aileron, such a natural inclination and so wrong. Great video.

@thabangmonnakgotla I am a licensed pilot with almost 250 hours! About to purchase a cherokee 6 and getting ready for my IFR checkride at the end of March! Haven't spun the airplane yet but planning to do a class this summer when I do my tail wheel. Best decision of my life.

@@thabangmonnakgotla nope, stalls but no spins. Cherokee six payload is unmatched, my neighbor has 2 of them so have a fair bit of time in it. Will be a good match for us.

There are two too types of pilots. Those that have spin training and those that are about to. You have to become spin efficient in the light aircraft game, to survive. Understanding CG position is vital.

Before I watch this video, this is what I was taught in 1975 on spin recovery. It was part of the UK syllabus (Ex 11) back then to have an instructor put the aircraft the student pilot is flying, into a spin and have him recover from it. We did 4 or 5 spins from 6,000ft in a Beagle Pup (PA 28s not certified for full-on spins!) and these were all serious, not far off vertical descents while spinning. I was taught to use full opposite rudder, then to push *centrally* forward on the stick, then to centralise the rudder pedals. The spin then stops and a slow pull out performed. It works. The UK, so I understand has removed this exercise from the PPL syllabus because it is too hazardous! I believe, if this really is the case, that this is plain daft.

"Stack the deck in your favor." Great advice. It's much like an ounce of prevention is worth/better than a pound of cure. Although one could argue, since lives are at stake, it's much more than a 1 to 16 ratio :-)

This is the best spin training I’ve seen yet. The reason why I liked it so much is because you explained how you get yourself into a spin. So far everyone has explained what aerodynamically happens in a spin, but they had not explained that it’s an uncoordinated turn at stall speeds that will set you up for a spin! Fantastic explanation of spin recovery. As a PPL student, I like that you paint a picture of a very likely scenario, how a panicked low hour pilot will feel and react and show how stable aircraft generally are even when the wings are driven into a stall due to pilot error or panic. One of my instructors I had me do rodder stalls. Stall the plane and keep it level just using just the rudder! Then recover from the stall! It was fun!

This video is amazing. It's the concept of plane and person are one you think systematically. It's nice to know there still are people this analytical. This saves people and builds confidence, rather than beating things into people. Your teaching how to truly fly. Rudder and pulling up takes airspeed away, breaking airodynamics. Being able to being to keep track of this makes you able to sense and recognize transition of movements.

I just completed my student solo yesterday afternoon! This video I had watched earlier in the day yesterday to get a better understanding of how spins develop (the idea they can happen scared me until I realized how they happen and how to avoid them), and it came to mind during my 3 takeoffs and landings and definitely helped my comfort level!!
