In 2011 i went to the Netherlands, I had the chance to walk the Nijmegen March, we the Canadians, were welcomed like heroes, even though I was just 19 and nothing close from a veteran at the time, Dutch people were greetings us and thanking Canada for liberating their country 66 years before. The following year, I went to a veteran house named " maison Paul Triquet " in Quebec Canada. I spoke with few veterans there and one of them had been in the Netherlands and had fought there. When I told him how the people in holland welcomed us, loved us and how grateful they still were, he teared up in front of me and simply asked " is that true " ? I’ll remember this conversation I had with this hero for my entire life. Those men gave everything for us.

Yes! I did the Nijmegan march in 2002 with the UK Air Cadets. We were aged 16-20. We too were welcomed like heroes as we marched, singing British songs as we passed (we were carrying the union flag). Made me realise just who we were honouring: the allied heroes who liberated the Netherlands and Europe.

I live in Graye-sur-mer. Jim Parks talks about it in the middle of this interview. My family and I are very grateful to him and all these comrades for what they have done on our beaches. when my children see a veteran of our beaches, they salute him. they are 6 and 8 years old but have understood to whom we owe our way of life. we will remember them! forever!

My Uncle landed at Juno on D-Day. Survived the war, only to die in a car accident at home. I have his medals and a picture of him in Holland "with his girlfriend" on the back that my grandmother wrote. He died before I was born. My father, also infantry, and his other brother (RAF), never spoke much about it. Dad told me one story when I asked as a kid. I could see the pain in his face, so I never asked again. And he never spoke of anything ever again.

Both my father’s and mother’s family lived through the German occupation of the Netherlands, and my grandfathers were actually both put on a train to perform civilian forced labor in Germany. When I was a wee lad in the early 90s, my parents somehow connected with a Canadian veteran by the name of Fred. The guy wanted to get in touch with a person (a young boy at the time) pictured with himself on an old photo taken during the liberation of our area in ‘45. This being the days before Facebook, my mother took out an ad in the local paper accompanied with the photo in an effort to locate the individual. Sadly, they never found him, and the last thing we heard of the vet was that he was suffering from cancer. Most likely he passed soon thereafter. It really impressed me as a kid nonetheless to have this man in our house. There’s even an old photo of me wearing his heavily decorated jacket. Our gratitude will never fade.

Hi, I really hope you see this. My moms uncle Henry Dingwall was in the Queens Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada of Winnipeg and was deployed to failed landing attempt (Operation Jubilee) in Dieppe prior to D-Day one of the Allied greatest failures. He was shot 3 times once in the head, his helmet ricochet the bullet into his neck. He survived, swimming 3 miles into the water during retreat. Once through his hand and took another round in his leg. I have been following this channel for many years and I’m in tears of you posting something so close to home and sharing the brutal realities our ancestors faced for our liberties and freedom today. Thank you, for the time and effort you and your family devote for this preservation of noble history.

That is an absolutely amazing story. My great grandfather was caught in the Normandy landing, and the only story he ever told me was when he was on the craft. He was one of the only ones left on the craft, the commander was shot and many of his friends killed

My great grandfather was a US infantry rifleman who fought side by side with Canadians and the English on D-Day from his own accounts and he said the Canadians really gave those Germans hell. I also used to live in the UK and I’ve heard the English say the Canadians are no joke in war. This video gave me chills several times. Keep this channel going as long as possible. It’s so important

My grandparents escaped Holland when the nazis invaded my grandma wrote a book about it and it’s very detailed how they lived through the war and they were nurses in the Dutch resistance

My father was in the Raf Regiment landing on DDay ,He was attached to a Canadian Regiment ,During his time with them in Holland they came across rocket sites , He said that some of the Canadian troops drank the pure alcohol (which fueled the rockets ) made them go blind . 🇬🇧🇨🇦🇺🇸👍

As a Dutchman, I can not be more thankful to this man and his Canadian countrymen. While most of the British and American forces were pushing into Germany, the Canadians liberated the rest of the Netherlands all the way until V-E Day. My grandmother (rest her soul) lived in Nijmegen as a young girl during the war and they housed multiple Allied soldiers, but mostly Canadians. She often told me that she was so happy the Canadians were there. To be liberated, but also the soldiers were kind enough to give her family food, like bread and chocolate. This was like paradise for them because they had so little to eat. They would grow their own food in the garden, like beans and carrots, but most was confiscated by the Germans. Her father had to make these dangerous trips at night to farms around the city to trade things like cigarettes for butter and eggs so the family could eat. We will never forget what the liberators of our country have done for us... You will always be in the hearts and minds of my family and me!

My great uncle was on Juno Beach. Was wounded in his femurs, and died on August 8 of the same year. He was in the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals of the 3rd Division.

I know I’ve made this comment before, but I really hope my generation gets ahead of talking to this heroes before it is too late. People that served in Korea and Vietnam are also getting up there in age, and they were unfortunately not looked at in the same light as WW2 vets. A lot of people out there still need to heal too.

My grandfather was a devout Canadian Jew and served in the Canadian armed forces as a doctor and surgeon. I never got to meet him, as he had died of a heart attack in ‘66, but I’d like to think he helped make a difference for the side of freedom helping all the guys out on their campaign in Europe. Canada’s role in this war is imperative to the allied victory. Rest in peace Oscar Lewin, lest we forget.

A friend of mine said that he was in one of those "floating" tanks at Juno Beach. When the tank ht the water, it immediately began to sink. As it was filling up with water, he took out his knife, cut through the canvas and swam to shore. That's how he landed on Juno Beach.

Im only a 31 yr old american. But I can't put into words how grateful I am for every single soldier that landed on D Day. American British and Canadian. U guys changed the world literally. They'll world is free because THEM. this was the last time freedom was actually at stake. I'm sorry our world turned into what it has it's sad u guys died for THIS. the world today and it's people civilian and political is sad and pathetic.

I've watched every video you guys have put out and to the best of my knowledge this is one of the few times Canada has even been mentioned let alone provided a subject for a story, thank you, please look for more of our Canadian stories we were one of the most revered and useful forces in the war. Also it's amazing how grateful the Dutch are they sent us 100,000 tulips to thank us for our role in the liberation of the Netherlands and to this day regularly send us 20,000 a year

My Uncle was also Winnipegs Own Rifle. He was wounded as one of the first to hit the beach that day. Fittingly, he passed away at a Remembrance Day Ceremony. Thank you for such a great video!

I've watched quite a few docos on D-Day . I think all of those men storming those Normandy beaches were the bravest soldiers in recent history . Australians were involved in the air flying bombers and fighters with the Brits , but to see all those gallant Americans , British and Canadians hitting those beaches knowing there was a very high chance it could be their last day alive is overwhelming . I'm sure if most Aussie forces were not engaged in battle with the Imperial Japanese in New Guinea and southeast Asia , we would have stormed those beaches with you .

My great great uncle fought in WW2 and Korea with the Nova Scotia Highlanders and landed on D-Day +5 with a artillery unite, he’s still alive and well age 99 in new Brunswick

I wonder if my grandfather knew this man? Glen Eldon Hockett landed on Juno beach as well and was with the Royal Winnipeg Rifles.... Loved that Memoirs of WWII did an episode about the Canadians. It was surreal standing on that beach and knowing my grandfather fought that decades ago...

Those units usually keep archives. You might be able to know if your grand father served in his battalion / company / platoon if you make the right calls. Google royal Winnipeg rifles. You might find answers to your questions

I’m gonna be real sad when these men are gone. I only have stories from my great uncles of what my grandfather went through in the Pacific Campaign in WWII. I have been trying to piece together his time from a book cover where he wrote where he went with the dates. He was and still is my hero. He died when I was 6. He is one of the reasons why I decided to get a degree in American history.

This is incredible. My grandfather (also named Jim) was from Winnipeg and was involved in D DAY. It makes me wonder if this guy perhaps knew him. My dad told me a story once, of his dad who was in a bit of a pit in the ground, with his crew, probably where a shell blew up previously, and got hit with another shell. Everyone died but him, but he was pretty torn up in the back, I guess the guy next to him was missing his head. Pretty hectic.. he was the same age as me now and it makes me feel god damn pathetic lol.

I have been to Juno beach a few years ago. Very humbling standing on those beaches even almost 80 years later. The Juno Beach Centre Museum is amazing.. was really worth the trip.

What a powerful story! As a fellow Canadian, I was honoured to listen to his story, and hear what our Canadian veterans did to fight for freedom in WW2 and Canada’s war effort liberating Holland! I don’t want to say I love these stories, so much as I love hearing these mens experiences. It takes me back to when I was a kid in elementary school in the mid 00’s and the WW2 vets would come in for remembrance day and tell their stories. I’ll never forget those men coming in, even in their old age they were still rugged, strong men. They truly do not make them like they used to.

I was born in 1992 so I know I'm blessed to have went through my younger years & elementary & middle school.. when things were still normal and it was and honor to celebrate our country & our heros who gave thee most for us to be here! I'm praying my daughter who's just turned 7 will learn as much as I & her father can teach her about these hero's, like we once did.. because the schools sure don't do much good for nothing these days! My great uncle William, simple from Ontario. Was among some of the first canadians that day he survived the whole campaign and made it home. The whole time you never spoke one word.Only when he past and some people from the legion. Showed up with his medals. Did I know God rest his soul?

It’s because at the time Canada was still technically part of the British Empire, so all of the empire countries get mixed into one.

My grandfather fought at Juno beach as well, and was in the same battalion. It's nice seeing this story being told as I never got the opportunity to ever speak to my grandfather about the war. He unfortunately passed away a while ago.

Worked with John Pue a Royal Marine he was a gunner on a landing craft twin 22,s.The landing craft put a Petard commanded by Capt King onto a beach which total traversed the beach and knocked out its designated bunker.He said he could see the Americans having a hard time on the beach next to them so he tried to help them by selecting targets with the twin 22,s.Sadly the management at Sainsbury,s where we worked had no knowledge of what John Pue did in the war they had no time to talk to him.He was in his 90,s then.

I’ve been to that beach in Normandy and the American sectors as well. I don’t see how they actually got a beachhead. Too many died for it but what amazing young men!!!! Thank God for them. Very few would do the same now. There are not enough praises for WWII combat soldiers. God bless their memories and their families!

Such an amazing story, some people don't really know how much a part Canada played with the allied forces and this guy actually landed on the beach on D-Day! I absolutely love hearing these stories

Yes finialy a Canadian! Makes my heart flutter to see this. We did so much, we pushed farther inland than any other nation during operation OVERLORD even after taking the second most heavily defended beach. My girlfriends parents are originally from the Netherlands and they say the same thing this man did that Canadians are treated like Kings over there because of us liberating them. Even if you didn't fight in the war they say but your family did they are eternally grateful even almost 75 years later.
