Surviving Sandy Singletrack on the Husqvarna Norden 901

Riding my Husqvarna Norden 901 on sandy singletrack isn't the worst idea I've ever had, but it is definitely on the list. On a recent training expedition with our friends at ‪@RIDEAdventures‬, Tyler invited me to accompany him and Kyle on some sandy single track. Having never done any Norden singletrack riding or really any adventure bike singletrack riding at all, I was understandably apprehensive.
Still, the three of us took our trio of adventure bikes (Husqvarna Norden 901, Honda Africa Twin, and Yamaha Tenere 700) on a windy singletrack trail made of sand that had whoops, berms, narrow passages between trees, and all the fun stuff.
Somehow, I survived my first Norden 901 singletrack experience and had a ton of fun in the process!

I read that the air filters on a 901 are located under the seat and you have to change them often after riding dirt. Is that true and is changing the filter a difficult thing to do?

Hmm..?Wasn't there an old 750 Africa Twin in your group there?..If it was, considering that one is slightly heavier than your Norden, but with higher CoG, & about half the power, you should be able to go anywherehe goes, if there isn't too much of a skill difference, right?..🤔

The video never shows just how impaired your vision is by the dust. Training is paying off for sure. Slow speed balance and control are crucial.

So I'm only a street rider but I'm looking to get into adv riding. What is the biggie about single track? Stats the difference between double track?
@94SexyStang
@94SexyStang 2 года назад
single track is tight and technical, Lots of sharp turns!.....it's NOT really designed for anything over 250cc!! Yes it can be done on larger bikes, as rider Skill is a big part, but it's Not generally fun on larger bikes, sometimes Advanced riders want to Test their skill(err luck). But there's a HUGE difference between adventure bikes and Dual Sport. Adventure bikes heavy, anything over 400lbs...and Not designed for real off-roading, mostly meant for Highway, and for off-road, you will be limited to mostly Dirt Roads and Camping road type stuff....not many people can make these bikes go Much past that....as it requires Great skill. Dual Sport are basically Road Dirt Bikes(less than 350lbs), and not usually super comfortable on long highway rids, but Very good off-road....it's all a compromise you need to figure out.
@adamanderson8838

That’s a scary one to figure out on your own with a heavy bike. It’s the most exciting but can be bad if you aren’t rested & worn out. These bikes are heavy to throw around.

For single track on an adventure bike you need to have good line selection, know how to carry momentum, and maintain traction with the clutch - it will be a bad day if you just wing it. I’d recommend taking lots of off-road and ADV oriented classes. I came from a mountain biking background and it made this stuff much easier to step into with a big bike. So if that’s in your toolkit, it definitely helps.

@chublez

They don't want to ride a dirt bike on the highway. I never understood why people don't get that. Looks like these guys had a blast to me and didn't need to load the bike in a pickup to get there. Ideal bike, no. Workable, video shows it.

These are NOT adventure bikes. They are street touring bikes with knobbys and more ground clearance. A true adventure bike should never weigh more than 400 lbs. and in reality closer to 300 lbs. These bikes were NEVER meant to do single track. There will be the occasional very talented rider that can take these bikes on single track but for the most part owners will never take them on single track and in reality probably never off road. If you want to ride single track then buy a motorcycle made for it and go have adventures. The adventure these bikes are made for is a ride down a back road that may be dusty on your way to the hotel. With that said, You are becoming a better rider.
@94SexyStang
@94SexyStang 2 года назад
Exactly, many new riders are drinking the gimmick kool-aide! And don't actually realize these bikes are NOT designed for off-roading, until it's too late, and they're laying in a ditch wondering why they crashed their "adventure bike" in a half-inch of mud.
@chublez
@chublez 2 года назад
So your definition of adventure bike is a dirt bike with lights? Those already have a name they're called dual sports. Not everybody want's to ride the same as you and suffer on the highway on a little bike. These clearly aren't on top game in the single track and it's maybe a bit silly but they did it, same can be said for a lot of the small dual sports on longer high speed highway sections between the dirt bits on a cross country adventure though. Just like choosing a tire 70/30 50/50 30/70, bikes the same way pick your bias and learn to ride it in all the conditions you might find yourself in.
