The Dales Way - 81 Miles from Ilkley to Bowness-on-windermere.
Join me on Day 2 of my epic Dales Way hike as we tackle the longest stretch of the journey so far. This 39.5-kilometer trek from Ketterwill to Cowgill was a real test of endurance, with some tough and hard-going terrain that really took a toll on our feet. But the stunning scenery and fascinating points of interest along the way made every step worth it.
During the walk we walked past the Yockenthwaite Stone Circle, an ancient site of great cultural and historical significance. Then we walked along the Wharfe, dipping our feet in the icy cold water to refresh ourselves for the journey ahead. Wow it was cold! As we continued, we met with the Pennine Way and enjoyed breathtaking views of the Yorkshire Three Peaks, including the towering Whernside.
Our biggest ascent of the four-day challenge was a real challenge, but we soldiered on and were rewarded with an incredible pheasant and apple stew at the end of the day. We pushed ourselves to our limits and beyond, walking until we simply couldn't walk anymore. But with the trail always delivering, we found our perfect camping spot just before sunset, ready to take on whatever Day 3 would bring.
Hope you enjoy the video.

Haha thank you and nice to meet you too. Loved the chat and learning about the place hope it’s still going strong. It was certainly boggy after leaving there but it’s all good. Awesome route!

I couldn’t believe it. You think they’d welcome new people to the pub and shame they wouldn’t let us charge our gear. We would’ve stayed and had a few pints too but couldn’t wait to get out of there

The stone Circle looks like a Dew Pond, created to capture rain water and dew for livestock, the gaps in the stones are so the livestock drink it sparingly

Nice video series, I walked the path back in 2021 and agree about the Sportsman’s Arms really weird place and the beer on offer was crap, like you only stayed for one. Myself and somebody else stayed at the same campsite in Cowgill, yeah the facilities are more than basic with no drinking water/ramshackle toilets but it’s not great form to intentionally not pay a small farm like that the £5 fee or whatever they charge these days. Good memories.

Haha yeah it’s a strange place isn’t it. You’d think they’d be glad of the custom rather than make you feel awkward for being in there. Aah well. Yes I think that’s the same place. We pitched that late and left early there was nobody about. We did look in the morning as we were walking past but nobody around. We only pitched on the grass right next to the trail anyway and obviously didn’t use any facilities so no harm it was just one of those things on this one to be honest.

Cheers for that and yes bizarre. Felt really unwelcome and wouldn’t even go back there. You think they’d be glad of the business but guess they just like the one or two locals that go in.

Great video and your right getting to the start is the hardest part, I’m more of a day hiker but this year I’m doing the South Downs way and probably Snowdonia way, the Dales way does look nice. Keep up the good work.

Thanks Mazza. I’ve always found the hardest part is getting out but once you do it, it’s all worth it. South Downs looks like a good one and I’ve not heard of the Snowdonia Way so I’ll google that one next. Thanks for the feedback really appreciate it

Hi Kris, just subscribed to your channel. Loving your videos and watching them in preparation for my solo Dales Way walk which I am doing next week, hopefully over 5/6 days. Question for you. I normally do long distance walks in the summer in trail running shoes. Comfortable and light but rubbish if wet and cold. I see you did the walk in trail type shoes. Do you think i will be ok in trail runners this time of the year or would boots be better. Cheers Mike.
@krisgleave
@krisgleave Год назад
Hi Mike thanks for that and hope you’re enjoying them and should give you a great idea of what it’s like. I wore adidas terrex freehiker V1, I love them and all I wear for the past couple of years. They’re Gortex so never wet feet. Sure you’ll be fine in those but there were some pretty boggy sections after where we stopped for flapjacks. That section on the way to Whernside is a bit grim but just be careful. I’d wear whatever you’re comfiest in. Best of luck you’ll love it

Cheers Luke really appreciate that. Aah glad you saw the coast to coast too as absolutely loved that trip. Have you done it or planning it? And yes I filmed the Cumbria way too. Haven’t looked at the footage yet but will do tomorrow. That’ll be out probably a week on Wednesday as might do a quick gear video next week for what I took on the trips. Cumbria way is a great route too.

@@krisgleave well we only ever had enough time to go ulv to kes because of work commitments but we did that in 17 hours over 2 and a half days. Stayed at Lowick and langdale. Lovely route though will go back and do it the other way in the future !

@@BooniesPeaks Sounds like a good mission. I ended up doing it in 3 days but the last day was 51km which was tough going. You did the best part though. It’s also nice between Keswick and ½ way to Carlisle.

Loving your videos. I've walked the length of the Wharfe a couple of times but never further on than that. Would you say you need maps for this, or is the signage enough?
@krisgleave
@krisgleave Год назад
It’s worth walking more it’s great. To be honest I’d have a map or GPS as yes there are lots of signposts although lots of parts weren’t too easy to follow as crossing paths

Seems more and more pubs are now saying no charging these days. I get it to a point but when they are advertising walkers welcome then it's reasonable to expect that these same walkers may want to charge their devices. Even if they charged say a quid I'd be happy to pay that but its just the point blank no that irks me - it's not like we're carrying a washing machine on our backs! The one in Bassenthwaite (already charging Lakes prices for a pint) springs to mind. I've even seen the sockets covered up in some pubs. As an aside I don't think I'd have the balls to pitch that far down and clearly on someones land. Ever get busted? Anyway, keep up the good work.
@krisgleave
@krisgleave 7 месяцев назад
Apologies I’ve only just seen this comment. Yeah it’s crazy really as you’d think they’d value your business as it doesn’t really cost anything and you’re spending in there anyway. Surely the longer you’d stay in the more you’d spend too but hey ho. I’m always respectful where I pitch and this one was actually the edge of a site I think…it was literally on the actual trail and nobody was there when I set up as it was late and left before anyway was up so couldn’t have paid if I wanted to. Never been moved on but if you pitch late, leave early and blend in and of course “G”leave no trace 😉 then I’m sure they’d be fine
