On "My Car Story" we're in the West Suburbs of Chicago IL on 8-26-23.
We're looking at a 1963 Buick Electra 225 Hardtop 4 Door in Black Paint. The car comes with the factory 401 CI V8 engine and an automatic transmission.
The car's Owner is Chuck Hinderliter. Chuck’s had this car since 2000. He shares he drove by it and saw the car was for sale. All the chrome was shining, so he pulled over, and a couple days later the car was coming into his driveway. This car is a survivors with just over 55,000 original miles on it.
If you LOVE the “Trunk and Treats” here is a link to the full video of all the brochures • 1963 Buick Dealership ...
ENJOY!

Lou - love the channel but please stop calling cars like this "big boats". As an owner of a few of these large old American cars, it drives me nuts when you use that perjorative to describe them. It's simple, if you don't like big cars like this, don't show them. I can assure you, put this car next to, say a new Highlander, Traverse, or Murano, you will see what I mean. You may not see this in the Chicago area, but out west here where you can drive your old car year-round, you can see the difference when we are sitting at a red light. These order large cars almost look athletic nowadays compared to a lot of cars and crossovers.

My dad used to say, back in the era of this car, that he felt Buick was the best luxury car buy. You get a car that’s almost a Cadillac for 15-20 less expense. He admired what a Cadillac represented and people that achieved the ability to afford one, but said he’d never spend the money for one, he’d buy a fully loaded Buick, pocket the difference, and enjoy a great automobile.

I can only say that this 1963 Buick Electra 225 Hardtop in black, exudes style and elegance wherever you look! From the large chrome grille, with the insignia of the three shields in the middle and its separate double headlights, to those four lateral horizontal pieces and chrome lines that frame the lower part and one that runs along the rear door towards the rear wings, along with the large bumper that folds and follows the lower rear contour of the fins, everything exudes elegance and good taste! Its interior with its predominantly silver upholstery, seats and even the instrument panel, combines perfectly with its elegant black body (a curious mention for the glove box that hides the trunk opening button). Finally, on the final drive, you could appreciate the smoothness and comfort with which this enormous Buick moved on the roads. Well done, Lou, to take a break in those big, comfortable rear seats; since it's like taking the living room sofas on wheels! Congratulations to Mr. Hinderliter, on his survival of only 55,000 miles! Kind regards!

Lou, I love how you find some of the coolest cars from when I was little a kid and huge memories of the cars in my family and aunts/uncles, etc. The '63 Electra 225 is no different. My dad's oldest sister (my aunt and uncle) traded in their '58 Buick and got a '63 225. The '63 was white. My aunt had a solid reputation for having a lead foot. She would always tell my dad her latest stories of being speeding (the state police knew her well.) She was proud of her lead foot, I am sure. So I know that '63 225 could rock and roll up and down highway 41. That 225 had to be powerful or she wouldn't have it. Good grief, that 70yo woman was one force of nature, and certain a good fit for that 225. Thanks for the memory boost!

Hi, Lou! This car is a perfect example of what people mean by "Buick-size"! You said it, Lou, it's a lot of car! And it does what it was intended to do, simply give its occupants a smooth, comfortable and relaxing ride (even if that horn does wake up the neighbors! LOL!). BTW, the other four-door hardtop, without the rear vent windows, was referred to as a four-window model. This has to be the best impulse buy Chuck ever made! 225 thanks to both of you for taking us along on this big, black. breezy, beautiful Buick sofa on wheels, waking up the neighbors!

The law initially required lights OR retroreflectors on vehicles manufactured after January 1, 1968. This law was amended to require lights AND retroreflectors on vehicles manufactured after January 1, 1970. Our family had a 1968 Ford Falcon and it only had side reflectors and no side marker lights. Some manufacturers used lights starting in 1968 but they were not a requirement until January 1, 1970.

OMG Lou thank you so much for this video on a chill ( in Michigan 0° degrees) Sunday morning. My first experience with the 225 actually started in 1963. A very close friend of mines Dad was a 225 lover/fanatic from this 63 model through 72 when his family moved out of town. Those cars were the "ultimate" in family driving fun. That car to a adolescent kid made a pretty big impression on me. When I started work with a employer that I would eventually spent 40 years with, my first "new" car was a 1979 225 coupe. Yes a coupe. I was so proud of that vehicle. Lou if opportunity knocks and theres a 79 to review would you consider a video on it ? Thank you.

You did it again Lou. Last weeks 59 Buick was close to mom's 59 just not enough doors, this one is exactly what she had in 63 after the 59 and after that was another black 4 door hardtop in 68. She had a 72 and 76 was her last car, all black 4 door hardtops. Like I said in other videos, she wouldn't own anything but a Buick.. I totally love your work, keep'em coming Lou 👍👍

My first car was 1965 Buick Electra 225. Love the interior of this one. It is very elegant. We have to remember a Buick was but one step down froma Cadillac. Love all the aluminum on the dashboard and the fit and finish and materials of the inside. Simply elegant. Your drive was so smooth. I remember how smooth my car was too. It drove itself. But, you are correct kids should not drive with one finger....or at all. I was 16, it was too big for a kid. But it was a hand-me-down. Love this car, the color and the smooth ride! Thanks Lou for the memories. Keep 'em coming.

This Buick still turns heads over 60 years later! I may be wrong, but it seemed to get more attention than most of the cars you get to ride in. The 1963 models signaled Buick's return to styling leadership. This is an excellent example of Buick's 1963 Senior offerings. The light on the front fender is an optional Cornering Lamp. Reverse lights were properly call Backup lights. Very nice video of an exceptional fine Buick

Hello Lou! That is a really fantastic looking Buick Deuce and a Quarter (as many people called it)! There aren't many Buicks like this anymore, and whenever you see one today, it's a treat. This car reminds me of a neighbor from years ago (he's been gone almost 40 years now) who was loyal to the Electra 225. I remember he owned five of them (1964, '66, '70, '74, and '79 Park Avenue). All but the '70 were four-door hardtops or sedans. He surely loved his Buicks. About this model of Electra 225 : this is known as a "pillarless sedan" in Buick-speak. This has body style number 4829; the conventional sedan (with center pillar) carries body style number 4819 and the four-window version has body style number 4839. The six-window model was formerly known as "Riviera," but, beginning in '63, that name went to Buick's new personal-luxury coupe. The '63 six-window hardtop sedan went to 11,468 happy buyers. That engine - all 401 cubic inches of it - pulled that Buick along in lively fashion. It was quite thirsty for fuel (about maybe 9 or 10 mpg on a good day); 10 years down the road, many people _did_ care about fuel economy, and many cars like this ended up being sold and, eventually, junked and crushed. By the gas crunch of 1973-74, there was no place for big gas guzzlers. But in the case of this Buick, it is geeat to know this has survived 61 years (I'll say the same about myself soon, God's willing and the creek doesn't rise!). One thing I couldn't help noticing, Lou: you and the car owner could almost pass for identical twins, except for slightly different heights! Thanks again, Lou, for another wonderful video. As always, I'll be looking for more!

Those cars were so fabulous. I loved to sit in them and play with the power windows. They worked without the key. I would run the battery down playing with the power seats and windows. Also I loved setting the speed alert down to 25 for fun. No Electra in 1963 Alabama would have been without factory air. That was the last year of “turbine drive” that was formerly known as Dynaflow.

So nice to see this! A 1963 Electra 225 was not only my first car (in 1982!) It was my Dream car. My great uncle bought it new and kept it PRISTINE. I loved it since I first saw and rode in it. (1968 or so..) Forget the "fact" that my "Gen X" self was supposed to be all about Camaros or GTOs, Nah, THIS is what I wanted! And it impressed me MORE than a Caddy (Electras have Understated PRESENCE!). He ended up "selling" to me it for a nominal $100 (a price was needed for title transfer, He did not REALLY want money for his "elderly used car") and I kept her until I was married and me and my wife bought a NEW 1987 LeSabre (I didn't make Park Avenue money, LOL) Been a Buick man ever since! Currently a Lucerne! Too bad they don't make CARS anymore!

At about 5:15 when you give the chauffeur the orders reminded me of two ladies in San Francisco (they didn't look like twins but for sure were sisters) that had a new big black Buick every year. You could see 'em comin', both seated in back, replete with chauffeur in proper attire and ALWAYS with hats on (the chauffeur also had a hat). In mid-afternoons I would pass them going north on Gough Street and I was going south. It's probably safe to assume that they lived in San Francisco's Pacific Heights neighborhood. And then one day in the late 1970s I never saw them again. I've often wondered who they were--what was their story. But the big black chauffeur-driven Buick with grey brocade upholstery and two Grande Dames always in hats is forever etched in my memory.

Awesome! The MCS begins with a clear picture of how long the owner has owned the car and how he found and purchased it. I am much more relaxed about this "story". The engine bay definitely looks survivor but the interior, chrome, and paint look Awesome! I would really like to know what he has done to this car since he purchased it. Lou I really do appreciate how you feature on your show cars that the owners love but may not be highly desired cars. What matters is you are featuring car enthusiasts who are preserving car history and enjoying it.

You know the rare musclecars are nice but this is the kind of cars we all remember ( if you are at least in your 50s now) because our familys had them. It was handed down to you as your first car, or was your first used car you could afford as a cash strapped young person. If I am at car show or just scanning some videos of cars on You Tube nice original family car survivors likes this draw me like a moth to a flame. It takes me back to my youth when cars like this were everywhere. My dad had a service station and worked on cars in his little 2 bay garage ( this was in the 70s) The older used 4 door family cars was his bread and butter. No all of us were lucky to have a Hemi Roadrunner or a 454 Chevelle SS but we can all recall driving or riding in cars like this.

Hey big bro Lou!!! Awesome, man!! Look at you "chillin like a villain" back there in Chuck's big black Buick! WOW. I would be right there back there with ya, big bro. And let me tell you-I could not wait for my tubesocked stockin' JV baseball jock feet to be buried in that deep pile carpet 🤪! Oh man! It would put me right to sleep, Lou. Chuck would pull away and I would slide to the other side easily lol 🤣!! And my floppy sneaks? Ha! They'd be hovering along side that Presidential Machine in reverant awe (President JF Kennedy written all over it) till you reach out nice 'n easy (like Elvis) and throw those boys in back with me lol 😂! What an awesome video, Lou. The way you took your time with this big All American beauty and showed her to us, man. That drive was EPIC and indeed smooth, I felt myself tipping offa my seat in the turns, too! What a treat looking under that hood and seeing what a true MACHINE this is, man. I like the fact that you can have all the windows down, and you can still talk normally over the wind noise. Also, despite all that open area, it doesn't seem to be blowing you out of there even at higher speeds. IDK if GM had a special name for their 6 window cars, but Chrysler did, called the Town Sedan. They didn't sell well and they only made them a couple yrs. I think PRND(S)L became a govt mandate in 65. Anyhow, this 1 looks great in black! High torque low stressed Buick cruisers, gotta love um!

It's in beautiful condition first of all. Second, I think you could call it kind of mid-range optioned. It's got at least electric windows and seats, side cornering lamps, the chrome accents and not much else. I guess the am radio, power steering and brakes - everything was optional. It is fairly plain otherwise. Gorgeous.

@loucostabile
@loucostabile 7 месяцев назад
Thanks for sharing what you notice. Well Jay, that's hard to say because each car brings a different experience and mood. For example if it's a Muscle Car I like the acceleration, if it's a super car I enjoy the speed. and if it's a big car like this one I like the relaxing ride and comfort, however I'll share the fun rides just today, a 1970 Challenger R/T with a 426 Hemi Pistol Grip 4 Speed. I drove a Duesenberg, a ride in a 49 Cadillac, and a ride in a Survivor 1966 Wildcat with under 10K miles, so stay tuned for those fun rides coming up. Lou P.S.
