Last time I've seen these episodes were as a teen over 10 years ago. Now I have a new appreciation for the quality camera work you've done, especially in survival situations. You make surviving and filming look so easy, which is a testament to your physical and mental stamina.
Same here I remember wanting to do this kinda shit when I was 14 & 15... now I'm 28 and still watching but now I go do this same kinda stuff my self instead of just wishing..
You can't underestimate the significance of this original series. It inspired people to get outside and learn wilderness skills. It also inspired people to be prepared for anything. No one's come close to making films this interesting and authentic. It's not a reality show, it's a real show. So much better than what's on TV these days.
while i mostly agree with this being better than whats on tv these days, i highly recommend Clarkson's Farm if you want a show that shows real unscripted people .
@@squarebodychevyoverhauls6982 I mean... You have just as many watching it on tv. Its probably less time overall because TV commercial breaks are much much longer, and unskippable ads are 30 seconds max. Your ad breaks on here are 1 and a half minutes max. Usually less. Ultimately, you're watching this for free. If you don't want ads, buy the box set or buy youtube premium. Beggars can't be choosers.
@@squarebodychevyoverhauls6982 , I see no ads at all, because I'm using adblock, it's free, so I have no idea why someone would rather suffer through those annoying ads!!!
It’s crazy to think that Les had to carry so much gear whilst filming the early series of Survivorman! Imagine what it would have been like if he had a few GoPros, SD cards, small batteries and a solar recharger way back then. Loving all these episodes! Such a rich, educational and entertaining resource!
I was 12 when I’d watch this on discovery channel. Now I’m 30 and this show aged so well. Looks to me like this episode was the most difficult for Les in the first season, with all that endless cold rain. Nothing I hate more than being wet and cold
Les literally left a camera rolling on the other side of a glacier so he could get a super wide long shot of him walking it. That means he has to walk back to grab it (hoping it's still recording) and then walk back the way he just traversed twice already. INSANE! Thank you Les!
I draw the line at crevasses …8:54. Probably the scariest and most dangerous terrain I've seen Les traverse. You could not pay me enough to fall into one and slowly die of injuries and dehydration/exposure. What a horrible way to die. Thanks Les!
After rewatching the first season. I can honestly say, Les really was pushing himself to survive. That's because some of these scenarios/conditions he puts himself in are very harsh. Even for someone with this much experience and knowledge. Thank you, Les for bringing me back to my middle school days you're the best!
Tip for people who want to try and light a piece of paper with a lens: Should you have any kind of pen or ink with you, mark a spot on the paper (black will work best, obiously); any print will do, too. It will have a way easier time absorbing the light than the white paper.
This episode had very weird editing style to it. Brings back memories of watching these on cable in the states. Very enjoyable. Thanks for releasing them on RU-vid Les.
Les Stroud is The Man! Unfortunately, youtube has made many of his vid's unwatchable because of forced ads literally every 2-3 minutes. I timed it. RU-vid wants everyone to buy their paid content. I was thinking about it, but I will not financially support a company that is so willing to abuse it's potential customer base.
Yeah make your product good and then ask me to buy it, don't make it so bad that I feel forced to buy it. That's just wrong, RU-vid, and spotify are the worst at that. They litterally give you ads that say "do you wish there no ads buy our premium deal" like that is so messed up.
Approximately 8 years ago I was going through a little bout of depression and anxiety. Watching survivorman calmed and relaxed me. Ty. Such a great show!
Man you to! I had a mental breakdown then had giver a medication I was allergic to made it worse I was working ems at the time all Glory goes to Jesus Christ. I’m greatful be out it on less to make these videos
I feel like the episodes in the early seasons are much more hardcore in terms of the amount of gear he starts with. This one was incredibly challenging.
There is no way that he could go that many days without any real food. Especially when he's carrying 60 lbs. of equipment. Berries and such are packed full of fructose and fiber (minor carbs), but I only saw him drink water once in the whole 48 minutes. He's really good, but this run into the Rockies bordered on insanity (even for Les Stroud). There's a younger version of Les (who is also Canadian) who likes to "be outside" in the worst of winter conditions. His name is Xander Budnick and he makes really short videos about his winter adventures outside. I can't think of where he got "the survival bug" except from Les Stroud. He's not as experienced as Les, but his Camera Equip. is more generational and is of better quality... but they both carry 60 lbs. without any problems. I was saving this video for a day like today.
Les you were such a large part of my early teenage years. I used to come home and watch Survivorman as a routine before I went into my studies and homework. It was something I looked forward to at the end of my school day over 10 years ago. Thank you for everything you’ve done my friend I wish you all the best
My favorite season 1 episode, I appreciate it being uploaded here to see again. Those shots by that beautiful mountain river with the rocky shores later in the episode are always images that stuck with me since I first watched it years ago. Captivating landscape.
A lot of these shots look like they inspired the landscape for death stranding. Watching you walk around with that heavy pack full of gear over that barren landscape has its own form of beauty. Just amazing!
I Love Les Stroud. He's the real deal, original bad ass and he can do it all, and keep me watching these episodes over and over. Thanks to drawing the genetic short straw, most of the time I don't feel well, the rest of the time, I'm in real pain, daily. On my bad days, I can't pay attention to a movie or a new episode, so I have these 5 or 6 people, artists that just soothe me. I can let Season 1 just run all the way through, doze, listen to a voice tat's come to feel like a friend. People like me tend to self isolate. As long as I have my dog, and my still barely functioning old laptop or cell phone, I can try to put my mind on the trail with Les, and not in a body that malfunctions and produces kidney stones and grit non-stop. That's just one of my illnesses. I love zombie movies, and apocalypse/survival movies, and I always find myself thinking, Ok, zones of assessment, water, shelter, defense. . . why is it in every zombie movie people dress in shorts and tank tops? Maybe Les could do a series of horror movie situations and team up with like Eli Roth or Stephen King for episodes. Yeah, this is how m brain drifts.
Thanks for making these incredibly inspiring films, and thanks again for putting them on this easilly accessible platform where I can watch it for free!!
I remember this episode vividly from my child hood. Love rewatching all of them on RU-vid. Such great memories and now can actualy absorb the information and appreciate how great he is
In the time that has passed since watching the original, this alpine environment has been my happy place and where we love to immerse ourselves. It is not often that I watch an episode and think “I could do almost as well”.
As a kid I use to think I could easily survive the places in these episodes. Nowadays I've realize that I would never get stuck in a survival scenario, because I'll most likely die from the disaster that would lead to it.
Damn, grew up watching this as a kid. Revisiting it now and wow, this was truly ahead of its time. Thanks Les for representing the Canucks! You do us proud!
This guy inspired me to start backpacking. Its by far the best feeling in the world. Hiking 70 miles through the wilderness with just what’s in your back. Best decision I ever made.
Les i used to watch ur show with my notebook open and take notes when i was in highschool. Thanks for all the knowledge and guidance dude. I didnt have a real role model then. Cheers!
I remember watching this series when I was 12. You are one of the reason why I have fascination for the outdoors. I also want to thank you for putting this content out for free on RU-vid.
About 15 minutes in he’s clearly talking about Aron ralston and the next episode takes place in the canyon lands. I find it hilarious that Les probably said to himself “that’s where I should do the next episode”
@@TheDsRequiem When "Survivor Man" intersects MY old stomping grounds and pretends mountain lions are a threat and even *bobcats* ! Where the only thing that preys on humans are mosquitoes. Hahaha May as well pretend trout are piranhas.
Thank you for this series and what you continue to create. You've inspired for years and continue to do so today. Surviving alone with limited resources while running multiple cameras and getting b roll. Then cutting to your own music...You are legend.
Use to watch this guy all the time on the discovery channel, back when they actually played decent stuff. Now I can watch all is stuff here on RU-vid, good stuff.
Les is the absolute greatest he's so dedicated to getting good shots for his fans I mean the guy sets up a cam 📷 walks past them then has to walk back to get them I mean I have heard he will sometimes just leave them for his crew get them but mostly it's him getting them, guy is just the greatest, imagine having to do that tired, starving, knackered and dehydrated a legend and a half 👏.lege stroud
You’re the man Les! I remember watching you as a little kid and still loving your show all these years later! Thank you for sharing all your knowledge and adventures 💪🏼
Could you imagine this type of video in today’s time (2024) with the live streaming capabilities. We could easily be watching Les live as he does these types of videos.
Les, you're an absolute legend for putting these up for FREE!! Thank you! My brother & I used to watch the show back when we were kids. Awesome to re-watch them in full!
@@darcywade2711 it’s kind of comparing apples to oranges, Ed Strafford is a different style to Les but both are excellent in their own way. It’s also a personality difference which depends on whom you jive with the best. Personally I like them both and I think they’re great. I typically go towards Les because his style suits me better and who got me into survival. Now Ed maybe your cup of tea, totally great for you. Honestly it’s not a comparison as they’re both amazing at what they do.
@@aylazelanagrebiel3210 i mean it can be a conparison. One goes out with the intention to survive for 7 days, the other 10. They make very similar style content. I just think ed is better because he doesnt bring anything but a camera. Literally goes naked with just a camera not even a knife and does 60 days on a deserted island
Thank you Les for posting these on your channel! I’ve been happily binging these, while finishing up my finals. I used to watch these all the time as a teenager and young adult as they were on a lot. I was sad to find that aren’t, but I’m thankful they are on RU-vid!
I saw a story that someone tried to expose you on the Utah episode i believe. Saying how your camp spots are right next to the rode and all.. but this episode is def legit i mean you were dropped right on the peak of a 12000 ft mountain. I truly appreciate your dedication to your footage and survival skills.. remarkable!
He's legit in his survival. Whoever was bored enough to try to "expose" one of the very few decent people in the world who want to share valuable knowledge to a stupid, superficial world, clearly needs help. My brother in law worked for Les for 4 years. 100% legit. His crew stays within a far enough distance that he's completely alone but close enough that if there's a flare, they come. He would only use that if he broke a limb or contracted a severe illness that won't just pass in a few hours. Otherwise, he's surviving. He won't allow himself to die for the show, but he sure lets himself get close at times with the risks he takes.
Y’all need a hero. Where is Clark Kent? I give the man his dues but I’ve watched for few years only on RU-vid and he’s good but he’s not that great. He’s cocky af that’s not a “great human”
I have often wondered about this shot myself, ever since I saw it the first time on TV back in the early 2000s, that shot is incredible, it’s at least half a mile away. I theorized that he left that camera there and it was picked up later (instead of going back and re-walking the glacier). I have no idea if it’s true but possible I suppose.
Les, I must tell you; I have been watching and learning from you, since my adolescence. You are one of the most REAL, sincere, TRUE, man, bushman/expert people I know of & I think you are worth all your salt!👍👍👍👍👍👍🙌🙌 Thank you for teaching us so much.
I did a little day trip bushcrafting a couple of days ago in 10 degree weather. You cannot describe the pleasure that even a small fire brings when you’re cold. Magical.
Damn, I became so much a fan of you Les, just after one episode, I got totally addicted. And for someone who knows the forest pretty well, I got a bunch of knowledge from 7 of your episodes and I can't wait to go out and practice some of your tips. I really like the variety of fire starting methods you used and shown us in detail. Your content is fascinating.
