Susan Cheever, novelist, memoirist, literary historian, and daughter of John Cheever, discusses her exploration of America's literary past, "Louisa May Alcott: A Personal Biography." Louisa May Alcott never intended to write "Little Women." Written out of necessity to support her family, the book had an astounding success that changed her life. Presented by Harvard Book Store. AMAZING!!! Thank YOU and ALOHA MS CHEEVER and everyone else at WGGHForum and elsewhere who are making this happen -- helping writers spread joy and lighting candles in lockstep with them in order to ignite the human soul for forevermore (i cannot wait to read Moods LOL-LOL)...

What a great talk, and I enjoyed hearing her remarks about her relationship with her father.

This is a great look at Louisa May Alcott and how the stars came together to make her who she was. Susan Cheever uses her own work to analyze LMA's life and works. I look forward to reading her book.

and poor Louisa, from a very, very early age and often actually starving and freezing cold , did hard, manuel labour and still was chastised for complaining or being angry. It was pure luck she even survived her childhood and still her father let this happen ..And let his wife and other children too. He outlived them all.

I much preferred An Old-Fashioned Girl, Rose in Bloom, Eight Cousins, etc., to Little Women and Little Men, when I was young.

I had never heard that Laurie was inspired by Henry Thoreau. I have read accounts that Fritz was, though!

Good points. Why is there so much snubbing of Louisa and her brilliant work?

My conclusion we need more female publishers

I had no idea there was! Perhaps those snubbers don't matter much as this tale appears to pull stronger on the reading public than the snubbers.

For me louisa may alcott was a one hit wonder (though --what a HIT!!) I tried her other books, and they were pretty much unreadable, including little men.

Susan...heres a fascinating subject for you to research and write about...shes an enigma but deeply flawed and didnt treat women very well despite being a gay icon she badly needs rescueing from the LGBT community who have practically deified her..the real story is much more interesting, she is the character behind the BBC series 'Gentleman Jack".

Dam. That first chick needs to slow the hell down. People are there to see you. And the other lady. Have fun with it.
