Suspected counterfeit 1853 Type 1 gold dollar. An eBAY purchase from Germany. Am I right?

Had you tried weighing it? I have a similar fake. Mine is a slightly better quality forgery. It weighs over a half a gram less than it should.

I think you're very intuitive and I completely agree with your assessment of the coin. I would return it to the seller on Ebay for a full refund.

I bought an 1851 from a reputable dealer, sent it in to PCGS, and it came back "counterfeit - false dies". I never imagined that such a small coin would be counterfeited, especially in a lower grade. However, even with gold around $2000 per ounce, these coins only contain about $100 worth of gold, yet sell for $300+ in pretty much any condition. So I guess there is a market there for the counterfeiters. Luckily, my coin dealer not only refunded me the amount of my purchase, but gave me an extra $20 for the grading fee!

Hi Numi, The beading around the obverse looks uneven and too far from the rim. The nose on Liberty looks large near the forehead. Am I seeing things? Thanks Donald

I’ve messaged many sellers on eBay explaining their coins are fake. I’d say 5/10 are receptive and the others hate to admit they’re wrong and got took. They also don’t want to lose out on their purchase so they pass it off on the poor saps on eBay. Dangerous place it can be.

hard to tell, but surfaces look a little too shiney and "proofy" for a business strike, "lustre" looks like a plating to me and face detail looks a little odd - let us know what you find out.

I like the half eagles as well. It's affordable, easily attainable and it has value.

With the amount of coins you are dealing with, and the value, I would buy one of those digital sensors that can tell you write away if the coins are real. For the medals, it might be a great help too.

those small dings on the rim are a 100% tell that its a copy. when you look it up experts say that counterfeits sometimes have that exactly on the rim like yours.

Break it open and see if there's chocolate inside. Also, the hair looks totally different from the genuine one.

Purchased a similar coin on eBay before Christmas. When it arrived, it was clearly a fake, quite a few blemishes, no trace of the word 'Liberty' on the head, but very little wear on the other side of the coin. Received refund from seller, he had purchased them from a 'cash converter' Now just sticking to slabbed coins, however with the $ so strong, things are just too expensive.

Always buy slabbed, always check the number, always use PayPal and credit card, always buy if they offer returns.Never trust dealers they sell fakes as well.

That coin looks like a plastic toy, which is a bad sign.

I think it is fake, does not smell an American dollar at all!! There is nothing as much as I can see to be similar with a US dollar! You are definitely right on your point of viewing this coin.

To me it looks like the quality isn't there.

The problem with that coin is it looks like it's been electropolished therefore even IF it was real.the value is ruined.

I'm sorry to say its looks fake to me, the rim is wrong the beading isn't the same the stars look different, so many things to get you worried. And as you say the head is totally different and wrong. I am surprised you brought it with your experience even tho you trusted the seller. I am far from a expert but I would say its 100% fake, even if it had 1 wrong feature I would suspect a fake

It seems like you do a lot of coin buying, so haven't you ever thought of investing in a Sigma Metalytics that way you could pretty much verify this kind of stuff as soon as you receive it, mind you it's not cheap by any means, I believe it's almost $800.

Looks absolutely terrible, but thats coming from someone who regularly interacts with US precious metal content currency. Be like me buying sovereigns. Id get a few counterfeit ones, but you would know better. I'm so glad you get refunded on that one.

i'm a total noob and it definitely looks fake to me, in comparison with the other coin. The face on the fake is more crude than on the genuine coin and the stars aren't as dainty.

I have a couple of those and that one is definitely counterfeit Look at the chin on Lady Liberty and that hair that she has is awful. Lustor should have told you something for sure. Good thing you can get your money back if from ebay.

It looks like a recent-made coin, I would think that if you look with a microscope at the surface that yoy'll notice the difference with a genuine one. I make fake money myself but just for the fun of it, never have selled one and never will, I'm not a thief. But yes it is a fake and not very well made.

100% fake. Rims are all wrong, design wrong, etc. looks like a California gold token design. I was always told to buy graded gold dollars cause they're so highly counterfeited. I bought a type 2 1855 raw from my reputable dealer, and it was cracked out of a old ngc holder graded AU 50. Sent it into ngc came back au53.
