Really nice reaction to this fun video. Elvis performed this song in the Aloha From Hawaii special. Maybe you are relating to that . Not sure about the Christmas memory, but his 68 Special was initially going to be a Christmas special. Thank goodness it turned out to be much, much more. You should react to anything from that special, especially the black leather performances and the opening Trouble/Guitar Man number.❤❤❤

Elvis was born on January 8, 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi, in a 2 room shack of a house his dad built with money he borrowed from his boss. That's how dirt poor they were. He was one half of identical twins; the other boy - Jesse Garon - was stillborn. They were so poor, that Jesse Garon was buried in a shoebox in an unmarked grave. At Graceland they have a plaque with his name on it in his memory. Elvis always got along with the black community and learned a lot about music from his friends of color. Also, according to the one drop rule, Elvis would not be considered white, since he has Cherokee ancestors on both the Smith (his mother) and the Presley (his father) sides of the family. His paternal grandfather, Jesse Dunning Presley, was not happy that his two sons, Elvis' father Vernon and his brother Vester, married two sisters, Gladys and Clettes who were known to have Cherokee blood in their family tree. J.D. Presley was quite the racist a-hole, often drunk and a philandering husband to Minnie Mae (they were actually separated long before they finally divorced in 1954) who was always competing with his sons Vester and Vernon and who was known to abuse his kids when drunk. J.D. was publicly against race mixing and was in denial about the Cherokee blood in his own family tree. It was more publicly known that the Smith family had Native blood in their family tree, so when both his sons fell for 2 Smith sisters and Vernon, on top of that, was still a minor at 17 when he eloped with Gladys who was 4 years older than him, Jesse was totally pissed off. As a child, Elvis already had many friends in the black community at the time his family was one of 4 "white" families that lived in the predominantly black neighborhood The Hill, just across from Shake Rag. His childhood friend Sam Bell said that some of the (black) kids in that neighborhood had lighter skin than Elvis. One of Elvis' bodyguards once said that he thought it was a miracle Elvis got into Humes High School in Memphis, because it was "lily white". Elvis wanted to be more open about his Native ancestry, but his manager "colonel" Tom Parker (real name Andreas van Kuijk) was against it because he was afraid it might cost Elvis fans (and himself money). They did have Elvis play characters in his movies though where he had Native American blood (Flaming Star, G.I. Blues, Stay Away Joe). Once Elvis had his own (apprentice) job learning to be an electrician, he saved up his money and bought his clothes in the same style that many of his friends of color wore. He was called a (forgive me, just stating facts here) "n-lover" and got beaten up several times too. Later, when he was an established star, he would not perform at places where the members of color of his back-up band/orchestra weren't allowed.

I was born in 1964 the last year of the Baby Boomers. I am 59 Years old and Elvis is my favorite Singer and The Bee Gees are my favorite group. I am so glad I grew up in the 60/s and 70's and 80's. It was a golden era of music.

Axel, if you like this you’ll love his version of “Bridge Over Troubled Water” from the same show in 1970. “Bridge Over Troubled Water” was one the biggest songs of the 70’s by Simon & Garfunkel, but Elvis did a far superior version simply because of his voice.

Elvis had so much fun reacting to Ronnie Tutt’s drums. Also, from that same special he did “Patch it up”. Not quite as high intensity as Suspicious Minds but a very good performance. As a young person you need to see what all the fuss was about in 1956. The teenagers were crazy about him because no singer before had his style. Keep doing your Elvis reactions. The drummer is Ronnie Tutt who was with Elvis from (I believe) 1969 to 1977. He is a legend in hiw own right having worked with many other front men/ performers/ recording artists. Ronnie Tutt was working as a for hire drummer in Texas when he got the news that Elvis was looking for a drummer for his return to the stage. Ronnie took a risk, packing up his wife and kids and their belongings in the family station wagon and drove from Texas to L.A. where Elvis was holding auditions (the building is still in existence; it is now the L.A. Film School located on Sunset Boulevard). Ronnie was the very last in line to audition for Elvis. Plus he also didn't have his own drum set. The guy that auditioned before him let Ronnie borrow his (if my meory serves me correctly anyway). Anyway, Ronnie didn't think he would get the job. The odss of that happening to his way of thinking were incredibly low. Elvis needed a drummer that could keep up with him since he conducted entirely with his body movements/ dance moves and he always did whatever came to him in the moment. They rehearsed the music and songs on the set lists. But when it came to the actual performances Elvis was the consummate showman in the sense that no one never really knew what he was going to do next. He kept everyone on their toes including his own band members and back up singers. Which is why his one word of advice to them was basically, "Just keep your eyes on me now." before show time the first time they performed together. So Elvis thinks he's got his drummer chosen already when he decides to give the last guy in line a shot. Elvis never refused giving someone a chance, Elvis puts Ronnie through the paces, switching from fast to slow to fast again. Elvis is impressed with Ronnie's ability to keep up and be rght there with him so at the end of the audition Elvis says, "The man with the beard got it." The man with the beard was Ronnie Tutt. Thank you for sharing a most enjoyable reaction! I concur with Jenny Jorgensen. You would enjoy performaces from the 1968 Comeback Special. The drummer there is/ was D.J Fontana who had been with Elvis since 1955 and the stage was too small for D.J.'s drum set so the man improvised by setting up a guitar case on a stand and banging his drumsticks on that guitar case during the whole of the sit down shows. Pretty cool in my opinion ;)

The drummer is ronnie tutt and he once was quoted as saying drumig for elvis was like drumming for a stripper... Elvis never told Ronnie to do anything a certain way just what feels right with he and the music...

If you think the drums are good on this, watch the concert opening number “Mystery Train/ Tiger Man”. Also Jerry Scheff’s bass playing on this song was absolutely brilliant. Listen to it again just paying attention to his bass part! Elvis & his band will make you a better musician. I’m a metal musician who saw Elvis live. Elvis did movies about Hawaii, and the worlds most ever watched tv show from Hawaii. He is very much associated with Hawaii and did several hit albums of gospel Christmas songs.
