For our latest review where we compare the Suunto D5, the Shearwater Teric, the Garmin Descent Mk1, and the Ratio iDive Colour Easy visit ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rWGElj7pNcU.html Would love to hear your views!
Thanks for the positive comment - it's good to know it was appreciated. Haha... You're not the first person to comment on the action in the water - I wasn't even aware until I came to edit. Something was definitely desperate to become RU-vid famous!
Great review as always. Just bought a D5 to replace Eon Steel to pair with Tank Pod. Very easy navigation vs D6i. I like the recharging capability. When I dove in January in Mexico, all the cool kids (tech divers) were using watch computers for our recreational dives. Looking forward to diving it with Nitrox!
This watch is for beginner/intermediate recreational diver and it is priced accordingly. This product should never be compared to Garmin Descent or Shearwater Teric which are an entirely different league, targeted to advanced users, and come at many times the cost of the D5.
Art C I’ve been using the Descent Mk1 for a couple of weeks now and absolutely love it!! Does annoy me that it isn’t AI - hopefully the Mk2 will have it. Will really make it a market leader!!
I am a big fan of Suunto watches and also use the Suunto Sports watches and the D4 for diving more than 12 years. But there's a BUT: Having this kind of "modern" watches for diving means again more stress of charging every day in the evening. When you take the D4, you put a battery inside and dive for month... perhaps up to 2 years. In the end the D5 is a modern dive watch on the next evolution level, can synchronize with an app, but your dive is not getting better with it, but it can happen very fast on a dive safari, that you charged the watch day before yesterday... forgot to charge yesterday evening before going to bed... now you jump in the water... but next dive watch is perhaps empty. Sure - a bit of thinking and it won't happen. But with a good old D4 I never had to think about things like this.
Definitely the All black! Cos i love simple, discreet & elegant looking watch for daily use. Maybe i’ll wait for the Leather or stainless steel strap to be available too. Black stainless steel will be awesome...
gusmank ooooo - I like the sound of that! Black stainless steel would look epic! We had the black body with a number of coloured straps to try out. Ashamed to say the black body with the light pink strap was actually pretty cool, I think maybe because it was so unusual. Don’t hate me for it! 😂
Hopefully it will available soon in my country. We are in Bali. So everything come super late here. 😢 Our local suunto store said it will available by April. And i believe it will be available in rubber strap only.
Just bought this as an upgrade for my vyper and I'm so excited to test it out in the water this week. The only downside is that with all the strap options you still can't get a purple one.
danieloakworth thanks for the positive feedback and comment. Sadly there are a lot of haters out there - all 9 dislikes on the video appeared within a 5 min period, and seeing as it happens with every scuba product review we do for Mikes Dive Store - who knows. We have narrowed it down to a couple of sources, but needless to say we really aren’t that bothered. Hate away haters!!! 😊
Clay White yes - the app does allow you to customise settings. There has also been an update on the D5 that allows you to see notifications from your smart phone.
I’m missing no deco time together with other information! Simply one display segment is definitely missing!!! How can you dive without that information? Are you permanently pushing the buton?
I have one and certainly agree! You can set either one to show up in the outer circle of the face but I find it hard to see. Even the cheap back up Mares I attach to my bc displays this. I have the air integration pod that I love or I might have pursued returning this dive watch for this reason and the fact that is really only last for 3 dives so is a nightly charge.
Bought a D5 recently. No information about how the watch will perform under water. No guide to use when diving. I'm expected to figure out the diving interface while on a dive? Thanks Suunto, for omitting any sign of a user guide. This vLog could really be cut down in length, its nearly 02:30 in before we even see the product. And seriously, straps being the best feature? I have to say while the buckle looks sturdy the pins holding the strap to the face do not inspire confidence. My key concern is this feature increases risk of product loss.
Thanks for the feedback Robert - noted the footage before we started the review wasn't for everyone's liking and tried to amend that with subsequent videos... Sorry to hear you haven't got on with the D5 - I've since taken a rather strong fancy towards the Teric and Garmin Descent...
It's a really good point - especially when you consider Suunto lead the way in lots of fitness tech above the water. My hunch - and this is a hunch, that their next serious offer of a dive computer will be along the lines of the Descent Mk2. It needs to be really to keep up with the competition!!
Thanks - glad the review was useful. You should be able to check the date on the D5 by going into the settings. You can select the date to show on the main screen when it is being used as a watch
King Blaster seems to be the design for many new DC’s these days. Far more power being used for the varying brightness levels, more detail in the logs - very similar to the EON range. Different displays, with this being mineral crystal, and much bigger screen. The batteries now are non replaceable but will probably last you 10 years before you need to replace.
glock2312 that’s a really good question I’ve asked myself. I was hoping to get my hands on a Teric for this trip but wasn’t possible. I’m interested in trying this up against the Teric and the Decent MK2 when it comes out... I suspect the Teric will cover the D5 in terms of technical capabilities, but would really like to see for myself. Watch this space!!!
Very nice channel and reviews. however i dont recommended suunto at all! the algorithm used is complete garbage, and the computer block very easily. dangerous tools specially when they pretend to be tec computer. but love your work!
HD Scuba thank you, that’s very kind of you to say - no worries, everyone likes different things in life, and there’s quite a varied list of varying products on here that we’ve reviewed, so hopefully something for everyone! 😊
How would you compare it to the D6i novo Zulu? I almost bit the bullet on one, then our video popped up on my feed! Now I’m bloody torn and can’t decide!!!!
This is a great question Sierra Delta. The biggest change for me is the D5 comes with the EON menu system which is much simpler to use than the standard Suunto menus. Also the screen on the D5 comes with a full colour MIP display which is far greater than the D6i. It's much clearer to read and more pleasing on the eye. Also the strap option on the D5 (for me anyway) is a great draw and one of the reasons I want to go D5. Love the customisable aspect of it. The battery in the D5 is rechargeable whereas the D6i isn't. Whist you will get a long period of use before it needs changing, you will still need to send the D6i for a battery change etc. Finally - the D5 comes with the FUSED 2 RGBM algorithm which in my honest opinion is much closer to the Buhlmann than anything else out there. This alone makes the D5 the superior unit. If you're asking advice on where to go for the D6i or the D5, then my money all day long is on the D5. I will be replacing my old Viper Air with a D5 and Hayley is replacing her D6i with a D5 when we come to renew later in the year. Hope that helps?
Black Manta Photography oh man now your just making my decision even harder hahahahahaha! I’m pretty old school and carry enough crap I have to charge etc with me, having to recharge the battery every 6 days would drive me insane. I take it the Zulu nato straps are available for the D5?
@@sierradelta8920 But it's so easy to charge with the USB adaptor. You can charge anywhere at any time! Yes - the D5 has so many different strap options including the nato strap, so you can have a different strap depending on your mood! Hahahaha
Sierra Delta that’s going to depend on how much charge is in the watch to start with. In my experience with the pre production model it was taking a 2/3 hours to charge from empty, but was generally leaving it plugged in over night while I slept. Check this link out too 👍🏻 www.suunto.com/en-gb/Support/dive-computers-and-instruments-support/suunto-d5/
azdzad dazddaz thanks for the question. When we did the review of the D5 the app wasn’t released - the model we had in the Philippines was a preproduction unit, and then we had to send it back to Suunto. If we can get a loan unit again I’ll happily show the App as part of a review - will see what I can do. 👍🏻
mmmm what would i choose colorfull shiny display and after 2 days every time charging or d6i and after 350-500 dives change battery? ;))))(2-4 years) i see only one reason possible to cahnge older computer to new. only if it would work as smart watch like Garmin..for 600 pounds you can buy more than 2 used d4i ))
Diamond Ethan the FUSED 2 RGBM will make a huge difference, BUT the Buhlmann WILL be available as a firmware option on the Suunto Steel later this year! HUGE step forward!! 👍🏻
Suunto definitely lost my interest. No GPS and adding other features when you do a multi purpose vacation such as hiking etc. Garmin definitely nailed it with the Decent MK1 except the AI missing. Also the pins on the strap on the D5 look very flimsy. Battery life seems also disappointing compared to other smart watches on the market. If they would do a hybrid watch like a Suunto 9 and the D5 that would have been a winner. I don’t want to take multiple watches on holiday. Also no smartphone integration except log upload. Waiting for the Garmin Decent MK2 to be released even at the higher price tag.
Go for the descent mk 1 instead of this watch. - On one charge the battery goes for 13 days in watchmode. - interchangeable watchstraps as well. - CCR and trimix software is available on the watch (Suunto doesn't have it) - multi sport. - buhlman algorithm. - a library full of watchfaces, apps, and datafields. Downside: more expensive. Don't get me wrong, I love Suunto and I clearly see why people are attracted to this watch.
On one charge of Descent MK1 the battery goes for 20+ days in watch mode and 14+ days in smart watch mode, 20+ hours in (best) GPS mode. Descent MK1 is my dream watch. It's not cheap, but you can finally have one watch you can use it anywhere and anytime: in formal events, daily at work, in any sport, in the diving of all kinds, in any (also car) navigation (with 12GB of routable and topo maps uploaded), ...
@@PrimozP I'm sure I heard/read somewhere that the Descent Mk2 will have AI? Unsure if it's out yet, or when it's expected to land - that will be a game changer for them!
Hi Jack - thanks for the question. Yes, the D5 is provided with a scratch guard. You can find more information here. www.suunto.com/en-gb/Support/Product-support/suunto_d5/suunto_d5/care-and-support/installing-scratch-guard/
Thanks for mentioning that. I've just ordered my D5 and ordered a separate scratch guard but went ahead and cancelled it right away after reading this! You've just saved me a few $
Thanks for the positive comment :) I know! So difficult to not only choose the colour of the body, but also which additional strap to buy! Would love to know what option you go for when you decide! Do let me know :)
