I'm partial to Suzuki. I like KLRs, yet I would consider the DR as an upgrade! As far as bikes go, simple is best in my experience, compared to the uber-adventure bikes.

JNS LED headlight on my XR650L turned out to be a really great upgrade. And then put an IMS 6 gallon tank on my Honda a clear one worked as a gas gauge. I get a lot of compliments on it. Super happy for you! Stay safe.

What kind of mpg's do you get out of your XR? (and what year is it) Last year I got to borrow an old one (1995) for some dual sport riding. Loved it. Kind of abused it drifting on gravel. In motion it felt like a big dirt bike. But I only got 104 miles out of that stock 2.8g tankful and wow did that kill the buzz. So range and economy improvements would be important.

I totally relate to your "I'm a dual-sport" guy comment in the vid. I'm doing sprockets and chain on a friend's '17 KTM 1290 Super Adventure R and I admire the beast but have no interest in owning one. I don't even want to do the test drive. A 650 dual-sport is as big as I want to go. So your latest additions to the fleet are right in my interest zone. Let the good times roll!!

I think these Suzuki's have a niche that's so good that it draws people to them. Reliable & affordable, plenty of parts w/ no waiting like I've heard of KTM owners waiting a year for stuff. But I digress, the DR's(400/650) are simple for most to work on plus the cult following means there people all around doing stuff to their bike. After market is thru the roof, part of the culture, and for the most part it's affordable. I'm looking for a 1st bike so I'm looking at your reasons for the 650's ~ thanks for the videos

I had a KLR650 and now have a DR650. The KLR is a more comfortable touring bike out of the box (ergos, seat and wind protection), but you can turn the DR in any kind of bike you want it to be (from supermoto to dual sport to adventure/touring bike). The DR650 is just so much more fun than the KLR650. And agree with you about the 701, if it was made by Yamaha I'd have one parked in my garage, but it's KTM...
@SwankyCatProductions

100% agree with that! KLR is great for those who want to explore a little. The DR can explore A LOT more. Shouldn't take too many mods to make it feel pretty darn comfy on the road too. I can't wait!

No offense to the XR, I've had one. But the DR650 is just a better Dual Sport motorcycle. The KLR is a budget ADV bike and has long passed its dual sport heritage. The decision has always been simple; if you ride all dirt=XR, all street=KLR, and if you want to ride everything=DR.

Fun video. The DR weighs seventy pounds less then the KLR. There is a RU-vidr ( I think Australian ) who has put a six gallon tank and done some suspension and brake mods and drove his DR many thousands of happy miles. I wish the DR had fuel injection on it. But they seem to not suffer much from carb issues. Really good bikes.

Roll on power if properly geared should be nearly zero. If they geared motorcycles correctly they would have a super super tall 5th. Meaning, you should need to drop 2 gears before you get into the peak roll on torque. It's insane that consumers have not realized how terribly low all the Japanese motorcycles are geared---it is unacceptable.
@SwankyCatProductions

I take your point. However, even without any camping on the back the XR and DR both seem to require full throttle to hold 70 in 5th. If it was any higher, I think it'd be unusable.

Just getting around to watching this video, those engine protection pieces are from B&B, the bash plate is too I believe. B&B makes some of the top of the line offroad protection parts for bikes because they run everything through the Australian outback, hundreds of miles through single track and desert. They are RTV on there, but they shouldn't go anywhere for the lifetime of the bike.

Great info Cat. Thanks! I have the Dr.Z sm and I am curious on your thoughts with the Dr's off road capability. If it is as capable off road, and the weight penalty is a non issue, perhaps I may have to upgrade to a 650 like you did. Keep up the great content. Cheers!
@SwankyCatProductions
@SwankyCatProductions 5 месяцев назад
Thanks man! I would bet that the DR might even perform better off road. The SM model has wheels about the same size as my TW200 and the DR's 21 front, 17 rear, should make up for the weight. The lower seat height will make me a bit more comfy off road too. Cheers!

@@SwankyCatProductions thanks for the reply. My concern is the suspension on the 650. I'm no supercross hero, but I have yet to bottom out my Dr.Z off road. I have 18" 21" rims on there now, but I'm actually switching back to my 17's for off road. Everyone airs down or gets 'fatties' for more traction, I've found that having a 120 on the front means more traction. I'll be looking forward to your thoughts on the 650 suspension for gnarlier stuff like single track. Cheers!

That's actually one of the things I really like about the DR and the XR. They really don't have much to protect, like the KLR did. It'll be interesting to see how the first few drops go though... haha.

There is a neutral sensor I believe it's called, behind the clutch basket it was made of plastic on my 2013 DR story is that the manufacturer did not use loctite on screws. I pulled mine apart and screws were loose like almost finger tight cleaned it up and used RED loctite and followed my mechanic buddies arm torque wrench setting, to never let those screws fall into the back of the clutch basket.

@20:45 You ask why these bikes "arent more popular than they are." WHAT!!!??🤯 The DR650 is a 28 year old model yet it is the BEST SELLING SUZUKI MOTORCYCLE IN 2023! The DR community is one of the largest motorcycle communities. Hundreds of thousands of these bikes have been sold. Its undeniably one of the greatest and most popular motorcycles ever made.

Even I don't follow a lot of DR specific RU-vidrs if that's what you mean. Its an old bike, so in that case, the bike isnt the star of the channel, whereas for lots of guys I see on YT have to go through bikes a lot. Those guys, Ian, (I forget his name but) The Dork on the Road are two that come to mind, ride bike after bike, and they aren't interested in the old school stuff, although Ian did say the DR would be his "ATW Bike!" Awesome the bike has decent tires. Suzuki loses way too many sales by running showroom slicks when its sitting next to an XR. The face-lift DR200S was the same, could have been way more competitive with the 230s. With your TW background, a supermoto front rim with knobby would be a youtube unique platform. Great trade.

Those klr's are just more comfortable on long rd trips with alot of highway. You set in less of a motocross position which is far less crippling on the body when on the highway for extended rides. I put 100 miles of highway on a Dr or xr and my back is screaming from the more upright riding position and vibration on the hard asphalt...
@SwankyCatProductions
@SwankyCatProductions 3 месяца назад
The KLR definitely is a little more relaxed for sure. New bars and risers seem to help me out on the DR and XR, but I think the seats are both angled down a bit more which isn't the best. I don't really mind the vibes though, unless I'm really high on the rpms I don't really even think about it.
@matthunter1667
@matthunter1667 3 месяца назад
@SwankyCatProductions yea man I totally understand what your saying. My klr vibrates a lil more when I'm running highway at a higher rpm. I will say I love my klr, but in actual woods and trail setting with alot of tight sections and ruts.... Those xr's and Dr's are just more nimble and eat the off rd stuff up and ask for more... I like the klr for more highway and township rds... If it's tight woods and hard off road , the Hondas and suzuki's rein Supreme in my opinion. Great video bro !!!

I guess it depends on the ride mission..off road..DR650 no debate..on road KLR650 (gen 2) with mild off road..throw an XR650 into the mix..my guess the best off road for sure..street..? I would put the parabellum rally windshield on, DGV2 slip on exhaust and procycles jet kit. With needle on 3rd knotch and 145 main jet then you don’t need to hack up the air filter box. And A MUST, replace stock headlight with the cyclops led ultra bulb!!! Some other ideas is get a xitomer tail tidy kit and the 250 tail light coversion kit and a precision motorcycles tail rack 😎
