We drive the new Suzuki Jimny SZ4 1.5 in the Snow and Ice! On and Off-Road!
We also demonstrate how to use the four wheel drive system and explain the different modes 2H, 4H & 4L and Hill Descent Control. Also we have a lot of fun in the snow while doing it!
If you are a fan of the new Jimny, or want to know a bit more about how to use the four wheel drive in slippery conditions, then this is a must see video!
We are essentially a motorcycle review channel and were supposed to be testriding the new Triumph Thruxton 1200 RS today, but hey; it snowed, so we went out in the Jimny for a blast! We did a bit of green laning down a byway too.
Jimny's have become rare and are no longer imported into the UK or EU, thanks to the EU emissions laws. There is talk of a new commercial Suzuki Jimny in the pipeline, however.
This black Jimny was one of the first to be registered in the UK in 2019. Prices have risen massively so we are very happy not to lose any money on depreciation.
The SZ4 is the basic model, but we think it looks more rugged and military. Tell us what you think in the comments below.

Wife had a blue Samurai back in 97 when we first met and drove it til it fell to pieces. I always promised her another jeep if we could ever afford one. We went looking for a new car last October and went to Suzuki to look at a SCross. Guess what was in the yard? A blue 23 plate Jimny. Once she saw that it was doughy puppy eyes. Christ Almighty, she loves it. 2 seater commercial so can't take the MIL with us. Great. Thirsty little bugger but great fun. Not took it off-road yet but we did drive it to Wales. Bloody terrifying on the motorways. Vague steering blowed across two lanes by an Oil tanker..cramped,noisy whiney, underpowered and 300 quid plus tax and we absolutely bloody love it. Thanks for this video. Taking it around the car boot sale field this Sunday and will try 4H for the very first time 👍

I have had two new Jimnys in my time, one after another (before having kids and needing storage, of course), and they were the best fun to drive, although they were the older style version. I remember smugly driving up a snow-and-ice-covered hill on the way to work once in my Jimny, while others were slipping all over the place. The most fun car I've ever owned; as soon as the kids fly the nest, I will probably buy another, assuming I can find one at a reasonable price! Not sure I like the new boxiness as much, but it still looks fun to drive.

When I was in grece and rented Jimny for 24 hours - I fell in love with it =) - I always had my eyes on offroads and offroading and it is something want to explore - the right kind of adventure. Well long story short I ended up with LandCruiser xD currently building it up so I can go on some expedition. However in mittle of europe situation is bit different than overlanding over in australlia or US - When I drove thru local forest, I later learned that everything is private and I was very lucky not to get caught -_-

I live in the French Alps and my SZ5 (also black) is my go to car. We spend around 5 months with snow on roads here and the Jimny takes it in it’s stride. Even though the Dualers are pretty good in snow, I run Nokian winter specific Tyres during the snow months. I have 25k kms on the car now and it’s just coming up to it’s second birthday. I also have a Gen 3 Jimny which is currently in garage having a new gearbox fitted unfortunately. Definitely fantastic little cars. Great video by the way👍

Great little cars, Jimneys. I have a 16 yr old mk2 rav4 (last of the decent off road ones really) with a crawler first gear in place of proper LR but it has no problems off road nor on snow and is built like a tank. It really surprised me with just how capable it is. Auto difflock helps I think. When I had it first last year it used the same tyres you have but I didn't like them, in the wet or dry. I switched to Yokohama Geolanders and my word what an improvement! Better on road...quieter for one thing....better in the wet thanks to siping, much better off road due to sidewall tread and better self clearing and when the snow came I had zero problems. I would heartily recommend Geolanders over the Duellers any day of the week. Not as noisy and safer on road than dedicated mud pluggers. Would love a Jimney but bank balance says "no"! Great video again chaps and subbed. You're one team I don't mind at all helping to monetise on you tube although I dislike the left wing bias of the platform itself who recently demonetised a good charitable christian channel for speaking the truth!

Impressed by your Suzuki Jimny because it looks pretty basic without all the electronic gizzmos that are going to go wrong and be costly to fix in the long term. I could imagine real farmers using that Suzuki Jimny. It probably didn't sell that well because I recall something similar looking from Suzuki being the choice of "cool Transport" for hairdressers in the 80's or 90's.

I only viewed this now and though in Africa I have seen snow twice in my life, I am planning a Jimny excursion in the winter of 2023 through Lesotho where there will be lots of snow and ice on extremely challenging roads. This makes your advice and actual driving in snow invaluable to me. With the addition of radial cup protectors and rock sliders your repair bills will decrease dramatically when taking the Jimny into challenging off-road conditions. Adding a differential breather kit will save you **a lot of money** by preventing water ingress into your front and rear diffs if going through water that is deeper than the height of your drive train. From the very outset one should buy a new Jimny with upgraded all-terrain tyres sized 215/80R15 or better, unless you are going to only use the Jimny as a mall-crawler. A 50mm lift kit and upgraded suspension will really transform your Jimny into a vehicle that holds its own against the best 4x4 vehicles on the market. There is talk (including actual photos) of a new Jimny for 2023 (or 2024) aimed at the luxury SUV market that may be EU emissions compliant.

Great review as always, no nonsense! Probably, my favourite RU-vid channel. I nearly bought a new Jimny, but as a toy it was too expensive. However, I wish I had, as I recently saw one for sale at a dealer for £28,500! I think that's about £10,000 more than a new one! I've had 5 versions of the Vitara since 1998, are they are very underrated, I fitted BFG Goodrich Tyres to the earlier cars, but have fitted Michelin Cross Climate Plus tyres to my current Vitara, and the one before. The snow has never been a problem, stick it in 'Snow' mode and off you go. Stuck in a muddy field, just press the diff lock button and away you go! Hill descent is good in wet grassy fields - good car. You mentioned the Thruxton GT near the end of the video, don't you think that they have stolen the design of the exhausts, headlight mountings, the alloy plate above the foot pegs and tank strap from the Herald 400? looking forward to the next posting chaps!

My wife has a Toyota urban cruiser 4x4 diesel not an off roader but with winter tyres can go anywhere in the snow, and returns 60+ MPH. Thanks for valuable advices on the new Jimny . Being in Morocco can you give an advice on tyre pressure when driving in sand ?
@ljdmanxfella5793
@ljdmanxfella5793 3 года назад
Hi Jean-Luc. I hope you don't mind me answering your question, as I used to be a Land Rover off-road driving instructor for West Midlands Police here in the UK. So the same rules apply whether you're driving off-road on wet sand, dry sand, deep snow, melting snow/slush, or even solid ice. So first of all, *always* make sure you have a tyre compressor/inflator in your 4x4 at all times (the kind that plugs in to your vehicle's cigarette lighter). I don't know what units you measure tyre pressures in, in Morocco but I still use _'pounds per square inch',_ commonly referred to as _'psi'._ So in any of the driving conditions above, and in any make, model, or weight of 4x4, you should deflate your tyre pressures in all four tyres to *16 psi.* This only applies to off-road sand driving or dune driving. Not on light sandy roads. If necessary, most tyre manufacturers say you can go as low as 8 psi if conditions are particularly bad, *but* at 8 psi, you may run the risk of tyres coming off the rim altogether. So always try 16 psi and see how things go, as this is the recommended optimum pressure. At 16 psi, the _'contact footprint',_ i.e. the amount of rubber in contact with the sand/snow etc, is twice as much as at normal tyre pressures. In effect, giving you double the traction. Other things to remember when driving on dry sand in particular (again, only off-road), is to keep the rpm of your engine, slightly higher than normal, especially when changing up or down the gears. And lastly, try to do everything smoothly. For instance don't _'jab'_ at the brakes, or on the accelerator too suddenly. Sorry to be so long-winded, but I hope you find all this information helpful. Happy Driving! Salut Jean-Luc. Bonne conduite Jean-Luc!

Great video! I just have a question. You say it's a bad idea to drive with 4WD on wet roads. I'm just wondering, if the cars not slipping around on snow and icy roads, is the same true in regards to messing it up the differential on the car? In the video are you driving with 4WD on with the snowy roads? I'm wondering is the same true for stoney/gravel roads?

Thanks for another great video. I have a question which might be relevant to other owners of the new Jimny. When I'm driving my SZ5 around Stockholm, I don't go into 4H as roads are usually clear (more slush than anything else) but outside of town - or say, when driving up to the North of Sweden - I'm a bit unsure what to do. Would I be fine to go 4H for longer periods of time, even on the motorway, or should I be cautious about using it at all outside of REALLY snowy and icy conditions, smaller roads, etc? Don't want to ruin the gear box but don't want to slide off the road either ;-)

If you use hill descent, do you take all your feet of the pedals ? And isn't the car speeding up going down the hill ?
@MrDarcy-OlMan

In hill decent you don’t need to do anything with your feet (best to keep them in place just in case). The car will descend at walking pace. Only works in 4H & 4 L

Hi guys. thanks so much for your tips here. I'm based in Switzerland and about to take my Jimny out in the snow for the first time (just fell last night). I haven't used the 4WD yet and I'm just wondering is there any difference for an automatic transmission? I expect to use mainly 4H so I should start the engine, keep the brake on and keep it in neutral and move the lever to 4H? when it comes to stopping and changing back to 2H down I need to do anything other than stop, brake, neutral and change the lever back? I've heard you might need to reverse a little bit first? Thanks for your help.
@MrDarcy-OlMan
@MrDarcy-OlMan 2 года назад
Yes best to stop, put in neutral then change. It can be done on the move as long as it’s slow, coasting, snd front wheels pointing dead straight

You can go from 2h to 4h moving, but only if you’re wheels are pointing straight ahead and your not accelerating, and at a slow speed. If you get it wrong you can damage the transmission so I always stop

i have one ;) you can switch from 2H to 4H and back on the Fly while driving speeds up to 100km/h 60mph.... the front wheels should be straight when switching. The transfer case is synchronized, only for switching to 4L you have to stop. i really wonder how good the stock Bridgestone Duelers are working at Snow because the have no 3PMSF (Three Peak Mountain Snow Flake) rating only M+S. i put some Cooper Discoverer A/T3 Sport 2 on mine for this reason

I'm considering ordering one of these new (we can buy them in NZ, there's just a long wait), for I think similar reasons to why you own one. It'll be used as my daily driver for the 100km round trip I have the office. That round trip is a mountain highway that gets ice and snow in winter and is full of rough patches and pot holes due to half of it being built on clay. How do your tyres go on ice and hard packed snow? Enough sidewall for fairly fast driving on rough surfaces (I'm fine with changing the rim size)? For reference I'm driving on BFG KO2s on a 2nd Gen Surf I daily at the moment (looking to downsize and not have to a carry a full set of tools in case "someone else" breaks down...)

very good 👍🏻 several questions about 4x4 on wet road no 4x4 on wet roads (!?) but what difference on muddy roads ?
@MrDarcy-OlMan
@MrDarcy-OlMan 2 года назад
4x4 can be used anywhere there is sufficient lack of grip to prevent tension developing in the drive system. This is because, unlike most 4x4 systems, there is no centre differential so it grips extremely well off road.

cf Suzuki manual 3-17 Stop the vehicle OR reduce speed to less than 100 km / h (60 mph) with the front wheels right. cf Suzuki manual 3-19 Never use the vehicle in the "4H" or "4L" position on a dry road and, IF POSSIBLE, AVOID USING the "4H" and "4L" position on a WET ROAD, as this could seriously damage the transmission. cf Suzuki manual 3-20 The transfer lever CAN BE MOVED whether or not the vehicle is stationary. Position the front wheels straight and move the transfer lever from “2H” to “4H” or from “4H” to “2H”. If the vehicle is moving, its speed must be less than 100 km / h (60 mph) in order to perform this operation. so, exceptionally, I use this to prevent the rear from passing in front 🤫
