Thanks Boss! I love these Savages as well. I grew up on dirt bikes and BMX so these bars just felt like the right option for me. I love them. Thanks again🤘🏼
BackroadBozo same here. Grew up on motor and bmx. Where’d you get the bars at? Also what exhaust you got? I hate the stock. Sounds so lame haha. Yours sounds better
xSCHMiDx I’m not sure where I got the bars but I do know that the company name is Burly Brand. The exhaust is just stock straight piped with a side slash tip but I welded a washer on the end of the header to help keep some back pressure. I’m not sure how effective it is but it seems to run fine haha I might be redoing the whole exhaust this winter though
BackroadBozo yea I’ve read on forums that most don’t run well on straight pipes. Only a few people have gotten them to. So I guess you’re another haha. I’ll keep that trick in mind if/when I ever build mine haha
xSCHMiDx it runs decent but it does need rejetted and the valves readjusted. I was thinking about doing the high compression DR piston and a stage 2 cam this winter as well as a barnett clutch. The stock one is decent but with the added power I’m not sure how long it’ll hold up
Awesome video dude I have a rebel 250 and want an s40 next. Thanks for a video of raw sound instead of all the other videos of just talking the whole time.
Thanks man! yeah i don’t really like the talking vids, plus I don’t really have anything to say while I’m riding unless I get a little too buck nasty in the curves or someone cuts me off lol. Get an s40! You will love it!
Fighting Boredom the handling is superb man! Just give that throttle and clutch the ol’ boot scoot and boogie and she will stand right up! I’ll be working on being able to ride them out for longer once I get her all back together
Fighting Boredom yeah full clutch dump and 3/4 throttle should do it! And yeah its disappointing with the warmer weather just about here in PA. Yours is looking good with that cerakote! Makes me want to do it with some of my bits
GreatGasBee I’m going to try and post up more videos this year. More riding videos especially but also some build videos hopefully. You guys rock and the good feedback ive gotten from you all is motivation to make more videos! Just hang tight!
Raymond Johansen exactly. I’m actually in the works of doing a dr650 piston swap and getting my cam reground to be more aggressive. After that and a carb and clutch upgrade, this baby should rip way more than it already does!
Raymond Johansen not many people do it but the ones that have done it say it turns a stock savage into a snappy little booger! They say it increases HP up to about the 50 range from the stock 30hp so we’ll see!
Mason Marquardtm they are good bikes! Super light and nimble and they scoot along pretty well. The best part is they are not too expensive for a good one.
Nice video! My Savage has been sitting too long, it needs some work. I'd like to bob it, but am debating selling it and bobbing an old Harley, instead. I'd like to see your walk around video.
The savage is super easy and cheap to bob! You can easily turn it into a nice looking bobber for like $300 or less. The harley bobber would be sweet too though. I’m looking for a shovelhead to build a chopper. Just trying to get my savage done first though
@@backroadbozo I'm pretty ignorant, when it comes to working on bikes, but there seems to be a lot of support out there (especially for the Savage). It is a comfortable and light bike to ride, too. A bit underpowered for the highway, though.
@@danielpeins411 The ignorance sheds away the more you work on bikes. You learn what works and what doesn't, like anything. Research and execution, trial and error. Definitely not a highway bike but you get the savage on some twisty backroads and it will outperform most bikes in the same category. It's planted, light, and has some pep in her step. The Harley is definitely a better suit for the highway.
wicked bike and video! I just got one of these! a few questions if you dont mind.... 1) are those the factory risers that come standard on this bike? 2) i just replace my factory can with a $50 dollar ebay slip on and it sounds loud and basey which i love but, it crackles and pops really bad when i let off the throttle. i have a stock air cleaner and stock jets. do I or should I jet this with the stock style air cleaner and a pretty much straight through pipe with minimal baffling? love your bike and riding style bud!
Crackle and pop on the over run its running lean. In DR form these carbs run lean so we can assume these do too. I personally would go open K+N style filter(pod) and then find out what size the stage 2 Dyno jet main is for this bike and just buy the main then look at what the DR fellas do to enrich throughout most of which is inexpensive probably $30-$50 max. This should see you close to 40bhp without much being spent,on such a light bike that will feel like you're on a much bigger bike` There's loads of tuning tips on yt on the subject of these carbs! If you want anymore the OP was going DR high comp piston and high lift cam, this will move the power and torque further up the rpm range, this is a cruiser not a crosser! Personally if I went any route I'd go big bore and piston with a little porting in the head keep the std cam upping the carb along the way or even change to an fcr41 pumper. That would get you to the same 50 bhp or more but keep all the character of the original but with 50% more power would turn the little light weight into a rocket ship,in turn keeping the cruiser feel. The DR BIG came in 750cc and 800cc, a barrel and piston from one of these and a bit of head porting and you have a torque monster.
Hi. Great trip. I want to build a bobber, i am interested in the handlebars in your bike, can you please specify where did you buy it or send more pictures of the bike?
Cool Ride man!Cool Sound! Bud the handelbar Iss to big For This Bike..Put a small Dragbar on it.Its perfekt to Ride. I have my ls650 since 14years.And ist a cool maschiene.i Ride in Germany.have you hot the Problemficker vor the Timechain in your Motor?
Nah the bmx bars are there to stay on mine haha and i don’t have the timing chain fix yet. I just put a chain from a kz440 in and its been fine so far. I’ve done a lot to this bike since this video. If you have instagram, check my page out there @backroadbozo. I keep that more updated than here
Jorge Rivera thanks man! And I’ve hit 90mph but you have to hold it for a bit to get there. Can hit 80mph easy but after that its a slow climb in speed. Definitely not a highway bike but if you cruise backroads like me, it is plenty fun! Gets about 80-100mpg depending on how hard you ride.
@@backroadbozo Woah, that's pretty good autonomy. Just bought a Savage '97 but gonna get insurance spring next year. I read on several forums it was more around 45 mpg, which I thought was alot.
Man your Savage sound smooth not like mine 😂 mine is miss firing a lot. What can I do to help the miss firing I like how yours sounds what muffler do you have ? Thanks much
If its miss firing check your spark plug and maybe give the carb a cleaning. Make sure you run good gas too. I run an E3 spark plug and that seems to do good but any other ones will be fine with the proper gap. As for the muffler, it was just a slash cut exhaust tip with a sort of lollipop baffle I made. It really didn’t do much but make it loud and it made some snap crackle pops all the time lol I’ve since then made a new bigger inner diameter exhaust and got a legitimate muffler that sounds good and it does backfire anymore. I’m going make an update video eventually just to show everyone the bike in more detail
The bars are Burly Brand. I think the rise is 6.5” and then I have 2” risers from a kawasaki vulcan. If you run this same setup on a Savage or S40 i would recommend getting like an inch or two longer throttle and clutch cables.
@@goggles5460 they don’t require any risers if you don’t want to run any. I just wanted more rise to my bars so thats why I went with the 2 inch. You’d be better off with less rise in the risers for the sake of cable length.
I just got one of these, with 4000 miles, anybody know how long could the engine last if I do regular maintenance? And where can I get parts for this bike ?
Kenny Looi with regular maintenance and if you don’t beat on it to much the engine will last forever, really. Alot of guys getting well over 30-40k miles on theirs with just basic maintenance. Not many bolt on upgrades for these bikes but ebay is where I search for parts. If I’m looking for oem parts I get on partzilla.com
Thomas Knapp I’ve never ridden a sporty 883 so I cant really compare. I love my Savage though. Its light and easy to throw into turns. Its reliable and has good power. It has a good deal of get up and go for its size. From what I have read, it will give an 883 a run for its money. If you can, test ride one man. You’ll be surprised by the little thumper!
Where did you get the shorter risers or bar mounts? I have a 2012 and it has the longer ones and I want to put aftermarket bars on it but I need the shorter risers. Any ideas?
Try searching for kawasaki vulcan 800 risers I believe. Its been so long but I’m pretty sure thats what I searched on ebay and they work great. They are basically spacers that come with longer bolts.
@@user-em3hw8lo9q hell yeah man! Enjoy it! Mine was very reliable and a blast to ride and learn on. Be safe out there! People are trash drivers and animals love motorcycles
Alexandre Legault thanks! Its just the stock exhaust with a slash cut exhaust tip from AutoZone. I made my own baffle out of a washer to give it some back pressure. Since this video, I have bought a new reverse cone muffler. Still working on getting the jetting right but it sounds way better now. Check out my instagram for more photos and such of the bike, if you’d like.
Alexandre Legault yeah pretty much straight piped! I havent really seen the emco ones. I just recently picked up a muffler from Niche Cycle off of ebay. Sounds great but backfires so loud now lol gotta finesse the jetting a bit yet
With this bar/riser set up, i would recommend going atleast 1-2 inch longer cables. The stock ones do work but at full locked turn it will pull the clutch or throttle ever so slightly. This can be corrected by adding more free play to the cables but you’ll have a slightly sloppy feeling clutch or throttle. Best bet is get longer cables from barnett or motion pro but can be done with stock lengths.
Captain J The BK its a stock tank that I rawed out and clear coated. The bike is tore down to frame right now but once I get it back together I’ll be sure to post a walk around!
I still watch this every once in a while too haha. I still need to finish this bike. I built the engine and suspension after this video and blew the piston out the front of that engine. Rebuilt the engine again and just kept having dumb little issues so I just bought a Harley and been riding that. If you have instagram and are interested in seeing all the phases and build progresses of the savage, you can see it there. Same name there as on here. Thanks for watching dude! Glad you enjoy it🤘🏼
In this video, just a pod filter and exhaust tip. Today, its got a wiseco 94mm hi comp 10.5:1 piston, webcams stage 3 cam, barnett clutch, mikuni vm36 carb, ported and polished head, newer style rocker arms, new valves, made a new exhaust, 1.6” ID and a reverse cone muffler, E3 plug… i think thats it for the engine
Someone else asked this and I told them what would be best to keep the chopper rather than crosser feel. I see you've dropped the carb size. This is all you can do to retain some torque, but kind of backwards in going forward If you had got the standard 9.5:1 comp instead of 10.5:1 And a stage 1 cam you could have kept the 40mm carb and retained the torque and top end. Probably 1-2 bhp difference in my suggested set up but would feel like vtwin torque and would be a lot less revy. That's assuming you still have it. Hope those bars are CroMo. Love this little bike been thinking of an xv535 but this may suit my needs better and sounds thumpier lighter too for street work!👍🏻
The connecting rod bit the dust on the new engine build and sent it and the counter balancer right through the front of the cases. I’m working on the rebuild but no idea when it will be done
Life is busy. Id rather enjoy my rides when I have time than worry about filming and editing. I do want to make more videos but I have more important things in life to focus on right now. Plus, cameras are not cheap! If you want to see more of the bike, hit up my instagram @backroadbozo and scroll down a bit. Theres a bunch of info in my posts about what I did to it!
I'll eventually get around to doing one. I rebuilt the engine over winter and within 250 miles it shot the rod through the case. It was my fault for trusting a used crank off eBay. I'm currently almost done rebuilding the new engine so hopefully this one will stay together for a while haha then I'll do a walk around. If you have instagram you can see what it looks like now. My insta is @backroadbozo
@@Ottomojo Its just the raw steel tank. I used aircraft paint remover and a sander to get all the paint off and then treated it with some clear coat enamel
