The Suzuki Swift Sport has long been a car embraced by serious drivers who know a great handling hot hatch when they see it. Though not especially powerful, it's agile, chuckable and brilliant fun for not a lot of money. Few potential buyers know this, so the idea with this third generation post-2011 model was to widen its appeal with a smarter interior, lower running costs, a little more grunt and even sharper handling. For all that, this warm hatch still remained a well-kept secret in this segment, but one loyal buyers will enjoy hugely.
We remember when Hot Hatches weren't all about power. You had a simple, revvy, normally aspirated engine and there was certainly no need to fuss about with extra go-faster gadgetry. Four-wheel drive, trick diffs, double-clutch gearboxes, electronic stability systems - all very nice but all there to add weight and cost to what ought to be a simple, inexpensive formula. You might think that it's too late to turn the clock back in this segment - but Suzuki doesn't and in 2011 proved it by delivering us this car, the MK3 model Swift Sport.

Now imagine that engine and gearbox in a classic mini. A rocket right there

Thank you for another great review, always appreciated. These Suzuki Swifts are extremely popular here in NZ, this video explains in detail the reasons so many people have one. Nice detailed commentary and imaginative camera work in the delightful English countryside. (How does he remember all that information?) Thanks again for me, Geoff.

I’ve owned an identical 2014 model for the last 5 years, and it’s been nothing but reliable, economical fun. Sadly, this summer will see it sold as I need a larger car for my growing family. Hope it goes to a good home 😊

The M16A is a solid engine that is develish when tuned, a very known quantity to Suzuki techs and a joy to rev out. Glad it gave you all the years of reliable motoring. If youre thinking of staying in the Suzuki stable try the S-Cross, its great and versatile family car with good interior space, versatile cargo space, 2 flavours of hybrid, the same engine thats in the new Swift Sport(even though yeah it is a family car so your excitement mileage may vary)and AWD.

I had a 2013 3dr in ablaze red. Put some rally-style mudflaps, Heko wind deflectors, Remus stainless steel backbox and a GReddy induction kit, and a remapped ECU and it was lowered 40mm - I loved that car, I used to get random people complimenting it all over the place. I had to sell it as we needed a bigger car once the kids came along, and I miss it every day 😢 I'm tempted to buy another one as a little weekend toy, but I think the insurance on a 2nd car would be unjustifiable, but I'd have another in a heartbeat

Oh but they did change it, into a lighter weight turbocharged little rocket I hope to own one day.

and it's crap, this was the best model. As he said it's charm was being NA
@mindfreeze0838
@mindfreeze0838 10 месяцев назад
@@leefoster8015while the 1.6l is a good engine, the turbo is so much better in how its tuned and where you get access to power and how fast you can get it. The NA cant match that, plus it has better fuel consumption being a lighter car overall because that NA can have a good drink if you really give it the beans.
@leefoster8015
@leefoster8015 10 месяцев назад
@@mindfreeze0838 It's a fantastic engine. I have nothing against turbos (I drive a 22 plate m135i). But the later model lost it's charm and unique selling point. It will guaranteed be less reliable, used cheaper materials. The niche of the old car was that it was old school, bulletproof, and required driver skill to get the best out of it and more fun as a result. it's already showing in the residuals too with the more expensive car new being cheaper used than the earlier model with same milage. Personal preference but also think the new model looks more feminine and not really marketed as a hot hatch.
@mindfreeze0838
@mindfreeze0838 10 месяцев назад
@@leefoster8015so I get the ago old adage of Turbos being a problem later in life but all indications on the K14D(which has done its longest stint in the Vitara S from 2015)is that its not a problem engine outside of carbon buildup issues in non maintained examples. That is a far cry from the issues in other cars. In terms of the looks the car looks way more aggressive than the regular Swift and heck of alot more aggressive than a Golf R IMO. And finally the residuals for the new one are pretty good especially the Auto which the UK didnt get.

A Stage 1 Performance Remap (around £300) will up the Bhp to 150 and makes this car perfect. Just don't take the airbox out and put one of those stupid cone filters in. They look good but slow you down due to less oxygen in hot air from the engine bay. I've had mine over 5 years with zero problems 👍
@ap5194
@ap5194 6 месяцев назад
I'm tempted to map mine. Does it not affect the longevity of the engine though?
@polonium13
@polonium13 6 месяцев назад
@ap5194 I've read that remapping can shorten service intervals and wear clutches earlier. However, all a Stage 1 remap does is make the engine run as efficiently as it can. Cars are set up to run at all altitudes, humidities, temperatures and petrol qualities. In England, we have good quality fuel, a temperate climate and are pretty close to sea level. The boost in power and improved mpg comes from the engine running at it's full potential. I think it's with Stage 2 remaps that you really start stressing the engine. Mind you, Suzuki toyed with idea of adding a turbo but wanted the handling over-engineered. That would have been fun!
