While the Suzuki Vitara Brezza may be a brand-new entrant into the South African market space forming part of Suzuki SA’s comprehensive value line-up, it has been selling for some time now in India where it is produced and with around half a million units already sold, I had to sample what all the fuss is about.
Typical Suzuki
If you are looking for a value compact car on a budget, Suzuki always seems to be the first word in this department. Take the Ignis for instance, which we see selling in great numbers and its larger sibling the Vitara which is also a pretty popular choice within the SUV space. Well, the Vitara Brezza fits right in-between the two, filling the gap in terms of price, size and its value proposition.
Available in either GL or GLX models, with a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automated transmission, I spent time in the range-topping automatic GLX model. Across the range there is a lot of standard features and kit on offer, this includes ABS, EBD and twin airbags in the cabin. There are ISOFIX mounting child points and there is a spacious 328-litre boot with the seats folded up, and of course, seats that drop flat. This GLX model also has a large and impressive 7-inch multimedia touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a backing-up camera with PDC, electric side mirrors, climate-controlled air-conditioning and even a cooled upper glovebox. With electric windows throughout, multi-way adjustable seating and an overall sumptuous cabin, the Vitara Brezza certainly offers a lot in the way of space and features.
The Drive
There is only one choice of engine available, that is Suzuki’s naturally aspirated 1.5-litre petrol-driven unit which produces 77 kW and 138 Nm of torque. The claimed combined fuel-economy figures are around 6.2/L per 100km, while we were able to average 7.1/L per 100km on our new test unit with a mere 1500kms on the clock. Perhaps running in the motor further will see this improve.
There is no 4x4 option available owing to its very affordable entry price point into the market, however, the Vitara Brezza shares the same wheelbase as the Vitara (2,500mm) but this time it is 180mm shorter and 15mm wider. At 198mm it also offers a higher ride height (an increase of 13mm), something which I was able to test over some pretty rutted surfaces and glad to report the Vitara Brezza handled like a champ! The overall drive is one that is smooth and comforting, with its added crossover practicality.
The Style
In my opinion, I really like it. The GLX model which I drove also features neat 16-inch alloy wheels and LED projector headlamps, daytime running lights and front fog lamps, and includes nifty two-tone paint colour options including Sizzling Red with a Midnight Black roof, Granite Grey with an Autumn Orange roof and Torque Blue with a Midnight Black roof.
To Conclude
The Suzuki Vitara Brezza is an excellent value proposition, and very well aligned within the Suzuki vehicle stable. While it will soon be joined by Toyota’s upcoming new Cruiser model which shares its same platform and styling, it looks like its set to continue its Indian and global sales success here in Mzansi.
Oh, and one last thing! Did I mention that its priced from below R245,000 and comes with Suzuki’s standard five-year/200,000km warranty and four-year/60,000km service plan.
