Learning how to take the rear calliper off, clean it, understand how it works and then reassemble. The pins holding the brake pads were badly corroded and needed to be drilled out. Followed by fitting Hel braided brake lines. Huge thank you to AJ who was my instructor and his patience whilst filming!!

I am so happy that I found a channel that caters to the SV650 specifically. My only worry is that you dont have many subscribers or views and that youll end up not making more videos because of this. That would be tragic. Please dont stop making these videos if you can help it. You are our only hope!

It took a while to learn the skills I have now, and the RU-vid channel is the same, it will grow over time. I remember being excited at 1000 views and 100 subscribers- it has certainly grown from there. I will keep making videos, I love learning how things work and fixing things!

One of the best videos I have seen explaining the method of completing the task, with the added bonus of what to do with seized pins :) Really good vid.

+GTs Garage Hi, AJ and I are really chuffed with your kind words. It was a fun afternoon, and although the job took a lot longer than we expected, the end result is great.

Soak pins ends with crc over night and easy to remove in the morning with vice grips without drilling? Or a bit of heat on caliper end to free pins. Use a little anti seize in hole before replacing pin.

Awesome, just did this following your guide and the brake is good as new. Btw a piece of wood can be cut to tightly fit inside the brake pistons and then placed in a vice to make into a excellent piston remover that will not damage the metal. Could not even push the pistons with the lever but went straight off corrosion, messed up seal and all.

top marks for your instructional videos. . no hate intended here, to avoid risk of brake failure people need to know that those fluid seals must be fitted as per the workshop manuals from suzuki or tokico. those seals normally have a taper on the inner side . regards
@TamsenCooper
@TamsenCooper 7 лет назад
You are quite right, and the Haynes manual also noted the taper, but I spent a long time staring at the seals, then measuring with callipers etc. and I could not see a noticeable taper on one edge- but it is a great point to note, that if there is a taper, it must go in the right way round!

when putting new pins in, good idea to put copperslip on them to stop corrosion in future

the piston could be easily removed with an air pump help. Just plug pump tightly to caliper where hydraulic hose usualy goes and piston should comes out like a charm.

3 Years too late for this comment, but, heating the calliper to about 100C (aluminium) would expand it much more than steel pins and removal would be much easier. No rubber parts, so no risk for damage. Heat gun, or even Oven in this case.

Great tip for others out there, now mine are drilled, I can use a small punch through the hole if it was ever needed, but this tip might avoid the holes from being needed to be done at all.

great video very well described and very helpful, you have made amazing videos, i was just wondering where you got new bolts for the cailper that put back together and back to bike the hex heads, many thanks and keep up the good work
@TamsenCooper
@TamsenCooper 7 лет назад
Hey Grant, Thank you for your lovely comments. The bolts came from M&P and were ordered via eBay as a calliper kit (new seals, bolts). Hope you enjoy the upcoming videos also.

Great video, one question !! Lots of people stress about how bad is the brake fluid on your skin , however you don’t seem bother one bit . !! What are your thoughts for all the viewer out there . Thanks

Wear gloves.
@TamsenCooper
@TamsenCooper Год назад
Great point! It’s not super great for your skin, I mean, the stuff can strip paint so shouldn’t be left on skin for any time! I really should remember to put gloves on, but I always get a bit excited to crack on with a job, that by the time I realise I am covered it’s a bit late to put the gloves on 😂. I use swarfega to clean the grease and grime off and hot soapy water and that seems to work, ideal advice would be to stick the gloves on before I start! 😂

Thanks for another great "DIY" video for bikes and SV's specifically. I must say that it took me several minutes to realise that those great hairy hands weren't yours Tamsen, ahahahha (no offence "TJ") I know that brake fluid isn't good for your skin (worse for paint) but the brake cleaner spray can be nastier esp. if inhaled! I noticed the use of "copper grease" on the back plates of the pads, but why not use it for the bolts? What was it that "AJ" put on them please? I love a bit of work on the bike I could sit and watch for ages - oh I just did! :>)

Hi. Total newbie here. Thank you so much for your time creating this great tutorial I'm planning to add the new Brake lines soon. Do I have to take the complete breaking system off the bike? I'm just worried I will damage something! :) What spare would I need to purchase before I do so? Thanks
@TamsenCooper
@TamsenCooper 8 лет назад
Hey, thanks for the nice comments, glad you enjoyed the video! It is not necessary to take the whole brake system off. Regarding spares, it depends on how old the system is since the last maintenance run, my rear callipers as you saw had seized pins so that needed replacing, as well as the seals, I bought mine as a kit and did it all at once. I replaced the bolts more for looks (which made a great difference!!). Good luck with yours!!

I would recommend to add wd40 on to someone corroded bolts and parts so they last longer.
@TamsenCooper
@TamsenCooper 6 лет назад
It can act as a barrier against moisture so it can stop further corrosion, just be mindful which parts its gets near!!

Online and had them delivered. There are loads of companies. The cost for OEM parts is not always significantly higher than the cheaper brands I have found, worth spending a few mins comparing.
