According to Wikipedia: "In November 1872, Dvořák's Piano Quintet in A major, Op. 5, was performed in Prague, by a "splendid team of players" organized by Procházka. It was his first piece played in a concert." He was 31 years old, but was a struggling, poor organist in a small orchestra, who could not even afford his own piano. Only after winning the Austrian State Prize for composition in 1874 for a collection of 15 composi - thanks in large part to one of its voting members, Johannes Brahms, who recognized his musical genius, and not only advertised him to the world but also saw the need to get him funding so that he have the freedom to compose - did his name begin to spread outside of Prague. This is truly a well-developed and beautiful work, although not yet at the level of his elite work.

It wasn't possible, but now it is, as I listen for the first time, that this Dvorak Quintet, No 1, is close to as fine and fresh as No 2; more raw, almost strident at times, not so well furnished and finished perhaps, more exploratory, delving , but little less tender and free in its beauty and range, the piano given more rein, all in the charge of masters Borodin and Richter.
