I rarely get to this part of the state so this was an extra fun day for me. I met up with locals Chris and Chuck as well as my friend Jonathan.
You can find Chris on Great Lakes Now here: / 3692629347720873

- KINGSLEY NORTH -
Kingsley North is a lapidary store in Michigan's U.P. They make a great cab machine and sell many other brands too. They have a huge selection rough rock, tumblers, grit, jewelry supplies etc. at good prices. I buy most of my coarse grit from here in 45 lb. bags. It's the best price I have found. If you buy using the following link, I make a small commission.

This is the cabbing machine I use:

- THE ROCK SHED -
I buy a lot of lapidary supplies from The Rock Shed. I don't make money from your purchases there, but they have good prices and good service. This is where I buy my finer grits and polish.

I also have an Amazon storefront. This is where you can find other products you may have seen in my videos. As an Amazon Influencer, I earn from qualifying purchases. It doesn't cost you extra.

On Michigan Rocks you can join me on relaxing rock hunts in picturesque Michigan. I'll also show you how to polish rocks and teach you other lapidary techniques. New videos are posted every Friday and some Tuesdays. Subscribe now so you don't miss any upcoming videos!

@Gene.Guazzo
@Gene.Guazzo 3 дня назад
I’ll second that! Would be great to tag along with that group and soak up their experience. They’ve done a lot of tumbling with those examples we saw. Just eyeballing it and feeling the weight of it they could tell if it would shine up or not.

@@MichiganRocks It’s been so hot in the desert I haven’t been able to get out so I spent one of my weekends doing the same. I culled my rough down by about a third. Can’t believe some of the stuff I brought home. Cold water agates is a new term for me. I see a consistency in what they are picking up. What did they say they tumble out like?

I was just there this past weekend! We found some amazing finds. We found some excellent lightning stones, one lightning stone that had a two inch ammonite fossilized in it, one very tiny pudding stone, and some antique blue and white China chunks. Found some beautiful petosky stones. There was one rock that I’ve never seen before. It is dark black and had nice chunks of a pale sulfur green-yellow. So strange! No clue what it is. Also…we learned a thing or two about appropriate foot ware. Ouch! We wore crocs thinking we could clean them out easily. Wished we had boots instead.

I found a heavy duty one, it's on a piece of cedar now and I can pry stuff now without it bending. Still rocks fall off of it, I like his scoop design and can see why it would be better than most. Oh and I do like that it folds, mine doesn't so every so often it ends up sitting propped up next to my garage and I forget it. I Hit Pier Cove, Pilgrim Haven, Deer Lick Creek, Van Buren State Park, and the surrounding areas. Maybe we were at the same beaches! Anyway, I found a variety of amazing rocks and fossils! Another thing you can find on SW Michigan beaches is lake coal. Yes real coal. Since it is so light weight, it doesn't dwell in, at, or near the water. Have you found any LSAs on Lake MI? I found my first agate at Benton Harbor before I knew what they were. Still have it!

Have you ever tried to make your own sea glass ? I find it kinda cool,say maybe to make a small mural or like a stain glass window. Let me know just curious.

@@MichiganRocks I'm actually going there in 2 days. Would love to hit this beach. Haven't had much luck with rocks this year. Went to Rocky Gap which is usually plentiful with rocks. Nothing but sand.
@MichiganRocks

@@ladyofjazz448 I also made a video at Rocky Gap. You're right about the sand but we found a couple rocks.

Stones with the geode pockets: are those “safe” to tumble? Meaning will all the crystals fall out? Something about them makes them seem fragile. For reference, I found a piece of banded chert, and it has these black crystals in a pocket and … ledge thingy and I want to smooth it out. I had no idea yoopers were down there by the way.
@MichiganRocks

I'm not sure about tumbling the geodes. They seemed really soft when cutting them.

So is the cold water agate what you’ve been calling the mystery rock?
@MichiganRocks
@MichiganRocks 4 дня назад
No, not at all. The rock I call mystery rock is found on Lake Superior. It contains chalcedony, but I'm not sure it's 100% chalcedony. There are usually about four different colors in it, and they're mostly dark colors. They're also not fossils.

@@MichiganRocks oh awesome! Can you cut small copper ore on that too or do you need oil cooled for that? Love the videos
@MichiganRocks
@MichiganRocks 14 часов назад
@@bigcmcg3946 I have cut rocks with copper specks with no problem. I have found that diamond blades don't cut through pure copper very well though. It just sort of smears it instead of cutting it. I jammed my oil cooled slab saw on a piece rock with a fair amount of copper in it too.

@@MichiganRocks what would you recommend for the more dense copper? I’ve got several pieces that are very dense. Not sure if you have an email I could send pics of what I’m referring to. Definitely appreciate your time.
