Very nice, that was a good review. Was probably going to get a bag anyhow, but now I definitely will. Anything that might help with my Lee slugs. I like that Lee makes it possible to shoot slugs so affordably. Just haven't had the best results thus far, mostly due to wad failure. If that raised center prevents the wad from deforming at the base without a nitro card that would be awesome. The fact that a .69 RB fits so well is an added bonus. If they hold up I'll be thrilled.
@@buckandslugreloaders9005 link to the 690 round ball vids? I've just started casting them and trying to find a wad to use, the CB wads all seem to have the pedal re-enforcement that makes the ball flare the pedals and hull. I can't find original Winchester wads anywhere.
Leon, I decided to give the CB 250 SW wad a try with the 525 Lyman slug. Fit was perfect as you show, but the rest was terrible. In a 2 3/4” hull, the wad will NOT seal the powder in the case with either a straight hull like Federal, Cheddite, or Fiocchi, or the tapered hulls like Remington or WAA, unless an over powder card is used. Even then, this wad disintegrates completely upon firing even light loads of Longshot, (33gr) or Blue Dot (40gr), ruining accuracy and causing keyholing at 50 yards. 8 out of 9 recovered wads blew up totally or shed petals. I’ll try reinforcing the base with an X12X gas seal and a 1/8” nitro card under the wad in a 3” hull and report my results, but there’s no room to do this in the 2 3/4” hulls. So far, I’m disappointed in the performance of these wads. The good old Claybuster CB1138 seals the powder in 2 3/4” hulls without the nitro card or over powder wad underneath it, but I add the 1/8” nitro card to get the column height right for a fold crimp. So far, in 2 3/4” hulls the blue CB SW 250 slug wad is a complete failure for me. I can show you pictures of the blown up wads if you send an email address.
So did you figure out a better wad? I've just started casting 690 round ball and can't locate a wad that'll work. I think a WT12 would be perfect but I don't even know if winchester actually makes wads anymore.
Hey brother! Thanks for you comment. I’ve written a couple of articles for them. I’ve also did a review on their 4 pin roll crimpers on my channel. I love that place.
@@buckandslugreloaders9005 oh maybe I read that. I just didn't recognize your name but I remember reading an article about roll crimpers a while back. I didn't realize they were making special wads just for slugs but it's about time. I'll go and rewatch your video later when I'm not having it in the background at work but I'd be interested to know if they make the same thing in different cup depths. Not having to trim petals is a big deal. Also the Remington figure 8 or the federal style wad tail is a much better design it's kind of a pity they basted off of the Winchester style.
Thanks very much.......I cant wait to see your range review.......I am testing the Lyman in the near future with the Remington 12s4 wad and Longshot Powder. I will let you know how it goes.
Thanks for the video. I was thinking of getting some of these. I'm having great success with AA's and pellet slugs and .690 round balls. I use a lot of windjammer wads for the pellets and roundys as well and for .330 buckshot because it has a thinner petal. The slug wads seem like they'll work. How did they shoot for you?
I bet they’ll work wonders for buckshot. I compared these head-to-head with the WAA12 wad in my favorite load for the Lyman 525: STS hull, 25 grs of Herco, Lyman 525 in a WAA12 wad. I’m talking about the real WAA12’s not the Claybuster clones. This loads gives me 5 shots in one ragged hole at 50 yards. Very accurate. The SW250’s opened up to about 4 inches at 50 yards. Now granted, I only tried one load with it.
It's also a straight walled wad. Everything he showed was tapered. BTW, the Claybuster replacement for the 12S4 won't work for slugs. They've added ribs inside the cup that prevent that.
There are molds for larger ball for 12Ga but you'll end up loading those with gas seals and cushion wads as they won't fit in a wad without flaring out the pedals and causing a bulge in the hull that will cause seating/feeding issues.
@@buckandslugreloaders9005 I guess I forgot that’s the only one that would fit, all the rest are bore riders!!!!! I have all of the 12 gauge Svarog except the roundball and the AS-Molds Twister and Grizzly with all their available pin combinations and was thinking it would be nice to have a good slug wad for them. Dat ain’t happening!!!!
