Question:
In Q&A 13 a berm-swale system for flat properties is mentioned and I am very interested in this technique. It is very hard to find examples of these in my searching of the internet. Can we delve deeper into this? Are there references you can recommend which my searching has not turned up?

About Geoff:
Geoff is a world-renowned permaculture consultant, designer, and teacher. He has established permaculture demonstration sites that function as education centers in all the world’s extreme climates - information on the success of these systems is networked through the Permaculture Research Institute and the www.permaculturenews.org website.
About Permaculture:
Permaculture (en.wikipedia.o...) integrates land, resources, people and the environment through mutually beneficial synergies - imitating the no waste, closed-loop systems seen in diverse natural systems. Permaculture applies holistic solutions that are applicable in rural and urban contexts and at any scale. It is a multidisciplinary toolbox including agriculture, water harvesting and hydrology, energy, natural building, forestry, waste management, animal systems, aquaculture, appropriate technology, economics, and community development.

I'm working on a 6-acre property in the Mojave desert. It's just me, and whenever my Dad or nephew can afford to come help me, slowly, I'm making small swales across the landscape. These videos have been a well spring of knowledge. Thank you all.

I live on 1/2 acre and have a gentle slope in the front yard where we put two swales. Rainwater from the roof gutters dumps into them in order to spread the water across the growing area.

How's that going two years on?

And we'll probably never know how it is going 4 years later. But if you do respond, that'd be great! 😉

Most of the polder in the Netherlands is one big example of swales in flat country. We call them 'sloten'. The only difference is that they are always full so its more like a chinampa system.

An example I can think of would be the sort of terracing you see in rice fields on flat ground.

I guess that's good for when you have runoff or hard surface/compacted soil or a large property like acres of land

Do you have some examples of swales in veg gardens?
@BESHYSBEES
@BESHYSBEES 4 года назад
Swales are ideally for tree growing usually used on a broader scale that encompasses the veg garden and provides windbreak and part shade

Previously an attempt was made to ditch and drain the natural swale in this 3 acre field. I have sense continued to restore it. Skip to the last part of the video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-U35gOLfGD58.html

Do you have an tips for high altitude environments, particularly arid ones?

Look in to dew harvesting maybe. I think you can do it with plants too in an agroforestry system

Yeah but that’s for a desert. In a temperate climate eastern North America, I just do not see the purpose of swales on flat lands. Not to mention when you are 3 meters from the water table.

I think it's better to make fish pond instead of swale in flat land

I live in South Carolina. I cut one swale adjacent to our new orchard 2 years ago. It has made quite a difference--especially like during heavy rains (like the last few days) as the ground gets less boggy nearby. Also, the trees did quite well over the summer with the sporadic rain.

Swales on Flat Land, here you go on a small area of only about 3/4th of an acre and not much more catchment. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AQY3VFB2MCY.html

G'day Geoff, I understand the theory and have seen the results, we live in the Murraylands of South Australia. 200acres of old over used farmland. We get 300mm over a 10mth period, IE no great rain events, when it does rain we seldom get puddles to speak of, and when we do they have soaked in within 20 minutes ( next day dry dirt). Will swales work in such a climate? Look forward to your reply. Thanks for your hard work.

@Kezza Tries: Based on what you wrote (e.g., "dry dirt"), it sounds to me as if soil cover would probably be a higher priority for you than run-off.
@BESHYSBEES

Agreed you need ground cover, I’m near Mildura with the same climate. swales will work but you maybe better to keyline it first and grow in the key lines to help hold moisture
