In this episode, Dr. Adriana Lazarescu discusses swallowing mechanisms and esophageal motility disorders with an emphasis on the diagnosis of achalasia.
I like your explanation. I'd like another video about the ways to treat it and the different Chicago sub types. So often Achalasia patients are not td which type they have.
Food stock on my esophagus until now is already been 8hours from now i feel uncomfortable. But it just only chips i eat huhuhu. How can i remove this i try a lot i already drink soda is really painful
I was diagnosed with Achalasia. I also had the surgery 4 years ago. I am going back for the Pneumatic Dialation in a few weeks. In my case i know what caused my Achalasia. I became dagerously B12 deficient for many years (2001 to 2010) but did not know this. I had alot of symptoms such as difficulty swallowing. I got my B12 problem under control but beleive it caused the nerve damage to my esophagus because that is a side effect of B12. So hope that info might helps some diagnose their cause.
I just had my esophageal manometry test yesterday, which I failed miserably. It was ordered because it was discovered I have a tortuous esophagus on my last EGD scope. In between that time I was told I was critically low on b12, waiting on redraw now to see how that is doing. Is there any treatment options or is it just just something I will need to continue to manage? (1st noted symptoms about 5 years ago)
Lol... yeah. God has made so many children that have diseases that cause them to die after a horrible few months. Let me guess though... he works in mysterious ways? Lol... gtfo.
I think I have this, second time I had rice and bread and it got stuck in my oesophagus, pain was really sharp and the second time I drank water to get it down but it came back up and I start choking, then belching and throwing up the food. Kept burp Gas for the following hour after this occurred. I m booked in to see my doctor.
I'm having swallowing problems right now and I'm sacred to eat anything cause I feel like it's getting into my lungs and chest area and definitely I'm losing weight and I'm kinda sacred because also I have colonoscopy and endoscopy appointment coming August 4th I'm scared to swallow anything
Sometimes I suffer from this, when I swallow my food I feel it slowly go down and enter my stomach which causes me to want to vomit due to the large concentration of food that is in my esophagus and for it to happen I have to be constantly gulping down some of my saliva
I have been on about a 5 year journey and I am almost back to normal,I think the the main cause is stress, I retired from my job and broke up with the girl friend ,my first episode was when I 1st started dateing her , could not swallow for 3 days, then it became a regular thing ,hard to swallow dry bread and meat ect. vomiting up the lodged food ,if not careful in chewing 20 times type deal for about the last year after the break up about a year ago I realized I was pretty much able to swallow food in a normal fashion ,age is 65 now so that also may be a minor factor.just ate a Rubin no problem. still interesd in the problem that's how I landed here.
@@nicole2009ification Nicole I got over it , total , What may be the reason is eating to much bread , carbs etc .I cut back for othersreasons and situation improved Pitcher , Catcher , Dr. talk about this Pitcher on swallow gets weak mine got weak only half worked saw a video about this and bread after i got better hope this helped
I'm just curious, in alchalasia is it common to experience constant pressure throughout the esophagus that builds up and you belch which provides relief but then the pressure builds up right after again? im wondering if thats from the food getting stuck and fermenting and the gases building up? thank you.
@@toronto416. Esophageal manometry test where you swallow a tube about the size of small finger and when instructed to you drink water one swallow at a time then wait then swallow another mouthful of water. The tube is then removed easily. The tube has pressure sensors and transmitters that run inside the length of the tube, catheter and the swallowing data created is transferred to a monitored graph paper recording. That and an esophageal swallow or barium swallow will provide X-ray proof of your esophagus.
@@carenclemmons5002 hi, thank u for reply. What symptoms do u have? Do u have EoE too and Gerd? I have a Barrium swallow coming up will that show achalasia if I have it do you know?
Hello and I hope you or someone can help ,most doctors visits say all I need is Nexium and still got issues after many years. Problem is prevalent if I haven't eaten in quite few hours. First mouthful of food gets stuck somewhere and usually a mouthful of water will push the food down into the stomach , if not then i have bland regurgitation of the water first then the mouth full of food , struggle to breathe while this is going on and do get discomfort in the chest .Sometimes the water does push the food through to the stomach then I am OK after that and I can finish my meal. Usually the food is a sandwich made up of bread and chicken (yes I do chew to a fine pulp first) Softer more liquid foods don't cause a problem. But after the bland regurgitation of the mouthful of water then the food I am OK to finish my sandwich or whatever the meal is. This nearly happens every meal or at-least 5 times a week. I don't have re-flux or regurgitate and of my existing stomach contents. Especially happens with bread and when I have not eaten for hours. Hope you can advise Regards Greg J
Gregory James ...u might be having a stricture...u need to talk to the doctor..give a proper history...and let him carry some investigations..go for 24 four hour pH and combined pH impedance recording..it might help if its achlasia
Gregory James foods like meat.increase HCl production in stomach...so they recommended u a PPI....I haven't seen..or examined u....u might have..excessive HCl production..as in ZE syndrome.. ....get ur self checked once more...all the best.😊...
Gregory James you just discribed my exact problem, thank you I know now I'm being fobbed of by my doctors, it's very real and I'm not alone. Thank you for your comments. Wish you all the best
Oliver Lundstram sane bro, literally I don’t know what to do.I’ve had it for like 3 years and it is so difficult to eat certain foods.I wish I could eat normally😩
I most definitely have this disorder. I can't sip anything without choking. The liquid always goes to my nasal cavity and im always getting acid reflux. It's super embarrassing to have this because you are constantly spitting up and coughing loudly and struggling to breathe after you take a sip of something.☹😞😖
Hi, you do not have achalasia, there are too many things wrong to even explain. Most importantly Achalasia is about the last muscle before food enters the stomach, it's closer to the heart, your problem is higher up. You suck at self-diagnosing so please just seek professional help instead. It sounds like your problem is that liquids enter the airpipe, and if you don't get help, you might choke one day.
I see a lot of questions, comments, and concerns in the comment section of the video. If you are having certain symptoms. You really need to consider going to the doctor. They will probably refer you to a gastro doctor. If they can't figure out what's going on. But this isn't anything to play with. Chances are some of you all could have acid reflux, and medication should help that issue. It could be something more serious. So, you definitely want to get checked out. Instead of just trying to guess.
Me too! I’ve been searching how to fix this for years years of operations still haven’t helped me if you find something on how to help this please tell me because I’ve felt a lump in my throat and something I can’t swallow and it has felt like a weight on my chest for many long ass years now
Food stock on my esophagus until now is already been 8hours from now i feel uncomfortable. But it just only chips i eat huhuhu. How can i remove this i try a lot i already drink soda. It so really painful and umcomfortAble
I have acid reflux and horrible esophagus spasms which feels like scraper going around in my chest. Any bending or leaning over only intensifies this spasm pain. Started years ago when eating fast and down stacking heavy boxes. Now periodically just bending over brings it on. What is this?
Hi, If you have Achalasia, and only if, then a side-effect are the cardiospasms, these are intense chest pain attacks that can suddenly appear. I can suppress these attacks by drinking and eating. These attacks are NOT related to acid reflux, but are often confused with it! Acid reflux is lessened by Achalasia, but can be a problem to those who had the esophagus sphincter muscle cut in surgery, specifically when lying down.
Ive had endoscopy, colonoscopy, barium swallow....just a minor stricture in the esophagus...had a small dialation..5 days later ..back to the feeling of food stuck in my throat....throwing up is always a thought..... any suggestions??????
I hadlhm or Laporascopic Heller Myotomy and Dor Fundoplication and there is POEM depending on what type, how healthy, and how old you are. There is also balloon dilations and Botox rarely.
Could this initially cause issues with swallowing steak?> I notice it most with steak, I chew and chew and i still get the sensation I cannot swallow it, sometimes I can force myself other times it gets stuck and I cough it back up.
Achalasia I’m constantly burping every single day 24 hours a day off and on constantly I eat or don’t eat first thing before I go to bed first thing when I wake up in between coughing and burping fits
I am going through this right now. have not been able to keep food or drink down for a month now and lost lots of weight...doctors seem to have trouble figuring it out
+Osu! played by a noob Since I refused to give up and switched to a doctor who actually listened to my concerns, we figured it out, I was tested and diagnosed with Achalasia and have had surgery to correct the problem. It has now been 3 months post op and I am still doing well.
+Osu! played by a noob I am so sorry that you are suffering through this. I actually belong to some facebook groups that have helped me with dealing with this disease, maybe you can get some questions answered or just be in touch with others who understand what you are going through. facebook.com/groups/122780277800652/ and facebook.com/groups/77953468660/

I think I got this only get it if I eat dry food like bread or eat to quickly or if I haven't eaten all day then have a meal later I think my schincter closes tight ,then when opens I ok ,I do have a hiatus hernia as well small I massage the area a lot to get hernia down doesn't happen a lot
If you wait on medical intervention like surgery, you may miss your window of opportunity and not be able to have surgery because your esophagus may be too stretched out. It's called mega esophagus. Take care of it while you can! The alternative could be taking out the esophagus or a feeding tube.
Sounds like an anxiety issue. Its weird how something like that can manifest as other conditions. I'd look into managing stress/anxiety to see if that changes anything. I'm currently facing stress & anxiety rn in my life n wondering if that's what's causing my swallowing issues. Currently coming up with a plan to manage that and hopefully you can get this solved for yourself as well 👍 I'm also experiencing like a PTSD where when I was around 10 I choked on cheerios and skittles on two different occasions n that caused me to not eat solids for almost 3 years. I just ate tomato soup & chicken broth for fear that I would choke again & got very skinny from the diet I forced on myself. People were concerned my parents were neglecting me but they were hoping & praying for the day I would eat full meals again too.
So when does a person notice that they have achalasia? Is it when they vomit for many days? Also, how long does it take for food to ferment in the lower oesophagus? Thanks for this video 😌
No, it's not vomiting because there is no puke or stomach acid. The first phase for me was trouble eating fat or sticky food. Especially fries, meat and chewy candy. The food would take too long to go down, and you can feel it in the throat for a whole minute. If it piles on too much, your gag reflex will kick in and the food will come back up without having ever entered the stomach. From there on out it gets worse and worse until even liquids get stuck and it takes two hours to eat your dinner without gagging. Im not sure about the food fermenting thing, but its pretty foul to wake up with, if you eat food before sleeping.
Please feel free to reach out to me if you need a good positive person at 12629452383 breathe deep and smile😁 everything is going to be all good... and I do also have achalasia for about sevenish years now but even if you don't have it and need a friend please at least text and I can help educate you or just be there to listen. ✌️❤️😊
Nicholas Bronson Lees!!! I need answer! When I’m having dinner with my family, I have difficulty swallowing after eating half of my dinner. I feel like vomiting if I try to swallow it. I don’t have this problem when I’m eating alone. Why am I experiencing this?
not sure what i have but this seems very similar. these are my symptoms heart burn and chest pain after eating have to make myself throw up normally at night if i eat to get relief lost 30lbs in the past 4 months because i don't eat as much due to fear of the heart burn and other problems
Esophageal food bolus obstruction could a professional doctor answer please are sane isn’t it anyone below 50 needs not to worry just improve diet and life style?
There is primary Achalasia and secondary. Studies show it may be linked to auto immune disorders triggered by a virus. It may have a hereditary component.
Hey guys, Time to rethink your game plan... You sound like a pair of Androids so heavily scripted and so unspontaneous that one feels as if one's in a horror movie. Try again, and remember, your human beings...
