Swallowtail Jig is one of the simplest and best known Irish jigs. This fiddle lesson shows how to play the tune, to experiment with different accents and bowing patterns, and try out ornaments such as the roll and the cut. On-screen sheet music is used, available free as a pdf.

As a beginner fiddler for about 2 years, I find myself lacking the ornamentation and accents that you instruct. Thanks for the tips and encouragement to dress this tune up a bit!

I found your video VERY helpful. The comments about mixing it up were very significant to me at least as were when and how to add emphasis. Onlly been learning fiddle for abput five years and your points are hugely helpful. Youve given me my next skill target to spend a hundred years on.Many thanks. I had a tendency to play like the classical player enterpretation.

Very good. For accenting purposes, I believe that many fiddlers like to hold the bow at ¾ point along the shaft . There's a excellent four seasons performance where the violinists are all holding their bows in fiddle style. This does shorten duration for longest note possible and I noticed it . True about how much the sheet music really tells us. Irish fiddle musicians would read sheet music differently to classical violinists. I gotta say too that very few violinists can play Philip Glass properly from sheet music, they just got it or they ain't got it ; the right stuff , to be sure to be sure. .

It would be great if you had the tunes a lot slower to enable us to play along for practice. Great tutorial though!

Love the introduction. “Give me a tune”.......”Play Rakes of Kildare” say......so you do. Does the guitarist know the tune ? He thinks he does , and then proceeds to destroy his strings so everyone can hear him. Reminds me of joke about a poverty stricken fiddler , clad in old tatty clothes. A listener asks “ Do you know Your Balls Are Hanging Out ? “.......” the fiddler replies, you hum it, and I’ll play it “ Edit......great video.

Great vid, as always Chris. My band just started working on Swallowtail Jig, and it's interesting that we have some disagreement about which chord arrangement to follow. Yours ("just 2 chords") is a different take. All good!

Thanks Randy. There are of course many options when choosing chords, but sometime the simplest is the best!
