Once cygnets have hatched they stay close to their mother. It is more the job of the male swan to be the protector of his family. I would not go too close to them as I wouldn’t want to worry them, or be seen as a possible threat. When they are in the water they tend to keep their distance but occasionally they would swim over for food. You are right the swans are very protective of their young and would be aggressive if they are threatened. There is a fence in front of the nest so it is not easy to get too close which is a good thing for all concerned.

Thanks for leaving your comment though I am sad to hear about what you have said. It does make me very annoyed that dog owners allow their dogs to get very close to where the adult swans with their young are in the water. They don't have to allow this to happen. It causes a lot of distress to the swans and cygnets and is of no benefit to dogs either. It is a shame you did not take a photo of the dog and dog owner . When a dog kills a swan they can be fined as swans are a protected species. It is not unusal that the male swan gets killed at this time of the year when they are protecing the female on the nest or the young cygnets. I think it is tragic. I have also heard of female swans being killed also trying to protect their young. The male swans are only being agressive as they are trying to defend their family. Dog owners who allow their dogs to get into a fight are not only irresponsible, they obviously don't care about their dogs or other wildlife. They need to be caught and. fined.

Update on the swans: I went to see the mother and babies and feed them today, and I found that one of the babies have died. it's only 2 babies and their mother..

yes swans do normally pair up for life as long as other things do not interfere with that. I did see to my surprise one pair of swans swap partners There was a female who had lost its mate and had a cygnet to look after. A pair of other swans flew in and the new male adopted the female with the cygnet and the other female was then abandoned. As the new male with its new partner got together it did mean there was protection for her cygnet after losing her original mate So the male become the cygnet's surrogate parent from what I gather I think that is unusal but it meant the cygnet was more likely to survive. The next year they went on to mate again and they are still together, years later. .

I saw 8 eggs, but just 7 babies swan was success in hatching,, right?

@@anasalfatih4971 it is usual that one or even two eggs do not hatch successfully depending on the amount of eggs laid.

Birds don't get born, they hatch which is not the same thing

Where these swans are and build their nest I am always saying that dog walkers should keep their dogs on leads near the ponds but it is rare that they do. This year in a different pond in same area dog walkers allowed their dogs into the pond where the mother swan and her five cygnets were. She suffered five attacks from dogs in a week. Luckily she survived. Dog walkers are being very selfish in this respect.

+Polar Draknoir There possibility it was simply infertile as male failed at his "job" ;p you need to keep in mind female bird don't need male to lay egg, they only need to be stimulated, sometimes they lay eggs from no where for no reason and it also depends on bird spiecies (each of them have different nesting rituals)

They were behind a fence so I did not get that close as the fence was between them and me. They did not hiss or flap.

Predators. It's easy for a swan baby to get killed.

The cygnets are vulnerable particularly in the first 2 weeks after hatching. Usually one doesn’t survive due to natural causes. And yes there are predators: in the water they can be killed by pike, also a large gull can take one, dog attacks !

Dogs are known to attack swans quite frequently so swans will hiss to try and dissuade them from getting too close.

To avoid the membrane inside to stick to the shell and cause birth defect to the chick!! All the bird do that including man made incubators( they turns the eggs 2 or three time a day)
