In a world devastated by total nuclear war, a young girl named Swan has the power within her to reawaken the dead earth and rescue mankind from the brink of extinction. But another force walks the land--an ancient power of chaos bent on destroying every last vestige of hope: the Man with the Scarlet Eye. He rallies the armies roaming what was once America, turning them against Swan and her protectors in a final confrontation between good and evil.
"Swan Song," Robert McCammon's 1987 post-apocalyptic horror-fantasy novel has often been compared with Stephen King's "The Stand," and while there are definite similarities between the two, in the opinion of this reviewer, "Swan Song" is decidedly the better novel. McCammon's portrait of a devastated America and the survivors who emerge from the ruins--some to rebuild and others to exploit--lingers in the mind of the reader long after the final page is turned. Josh, Swan, Sister, Colonel Macklin, Roland Croninger, and a large cast of supporting characters, are wonderfully realized, and McCammon expertly weaves their storylines together, culminating in a finale that truly satisfies.
Coming in at over 900 pages, "Swan Song" is not a quick read; but the first time I read it, the story and its characters drew me in so completely that I finished it in three days. It has since become one of my all-time favorite novels, and is one of the few books I truly love.
At long last, "Swan Song" is being adapted into a TV series. It's about time...just do it right! See my video on the upcoming adaptation here: • "Swan Song" Series in ...

The Atlantean Archive focuses on books, short stories, movies, and television shows of the past, up through the 1980s, although we may cover more current things from time to time as well. I also hope to bring you interviews with some of the stars and creators who helped shape the culture that influenced my generation. My emphasis is on horror, science fiction, adventure, fantasy, movies, and TV shows that time forgot, general 70s and 80s nostalgia, and (occasionally) more serious historical content. Please like, subscribe, and share with anyone you wish to annoy!

Your not joking, Swan Song was by far the best book I've ever read (4×). Can't wait for the mini series or movie.

I read Swan Song years ago and loved it! Even more than The Stand.

I been slowly reading Swan Song for over a year and am about 61% through and it is really good. It is bleak so now than I have to put it down but it does grab you from page one. That openoing scene with the president lighting looking into the flame on the match is so powerful in a way that I can't put my finger on. It is already one the vary few fantasy books I have liked. The list also includes The Stand.

Agreed. The opening is powerful, probably because of the bleak, imminent doom feeling that it conveys. McCammon does an excellent job of conveying the imagery of total destruction and societal collapse in this book. I can understand why you would take it in sections.
