"The Warlord of Mars" is the third book in the Edgar Rice Burroughs' Mars or "Barsoom" series, and the final book in the series to feature John Carter as the main character. Picking up immediately after the the cliffhanger ending of "The Gods of Mars," "Warlord" sees John Carter once again trying to rescue his beloved Dejah Thoris. Even if he is successful, however, Carter and his friends face an uncertain future. They stand accused of blaspheming the Martian religion -- a crime punishable by death -- and Carter's enemies are anxious to bring about his downfall.
In my opinion, "The Warlord of Mars" is not as good as the previous two entries in the series but still has a number of memorable moments, a satisfying climax, and a solid resolution. Burroughs' Mars series is foundational to modern science fiction, and a must-read for all fans of the pulp-style adventure stories of yesteryear.

The Atlantean Archive focuses on books, short stories, movies, and television shows of the past, up through the 1980s, although we may cover more current things from time to time as well. I also hope to bring you interviews with some of the stars and creators who helped shape the culture that influenced my generation. My emphasis is on horror, science fiction, adventure, fantasy, movies, and TV shows that time forgot, general 70s and 80s nostalgia, and (occasionally) more serious historical content. Please like, subscribe, and share with anyone you wish to annoy!

Great review/discussion. When you talked about the mistakes that Carter made as the series went on, I remembered one glaring mistake he made even at the end of the very first book. I never bought the fact that he somehow forgot that he could use telepathy to open the door of the atmosphere plant to turn the pumps back on until the very last minute when people were already passing out from oxygen deprivation.

@northoftherockies That's a good point! I noticed that the whole telepathy thing was basically forgotten in books two and three. Maybe Burroughs decided that it made John Carter a little too powerful. Thanks for watching and commenting!

@@TheAtlanteanArchive I have only read the first three but now I decided to read the rest of them partly because I'm curious about whether or not telepathy plays a role in the other books.

@northoftherockies Let me know if you get to them before I do. I'm curious about that as well.

@ertrstytry I didn't get into him until just recently, and haven't read any of his other works yet. Check out Michael Vaughn's BookTube channel for more on Burroughs. He's really into the guy. His reviews were what prompted me to start reading Burroughs.
