‘Swansea Jack’ a poem by Derek Davies. Of all the stories I’ve been told the one that captures me most, Is the story of a local dog, rescuing lives there on our coast. One loving pet, a Newfoundland dog, his coat lay shining black, a retriever with a special name, and that name was Swansea Jack. That dog became a hero, helping people that were to drown, twenty seven souls he saved, from the waters of old Swansea town. Brave and fearless, strong and bold, this dog was one to treasure, famous throughout our city, saving lives there at his leisure. This story is one of local pride, those people know him best, Champion of the city, now laid down to rest. His stone lays near the footpath, on the seafront of our past, this legend lives with me forever, and forever may it last. The dog that saved so many lives, his coat lay shining black, forever in our memories, forever Swansea Jack.
The story of Jack was told by John Davies on the 'History Hunters' on ITV Wales back in 2000, I know because I was on it. I hear that the pub has gone. I've had no luck finding any episodes of the program on youtube, sadly. Lovely dogs retrievers...
Awesome video, well put together, good narration, nice clips of the city and of course great history about Jack. What a wonderful dog he was. Good job all.
