I beg of you, as an apprentice, please don't learn how to do plumbing from youtube. This is where I come for entertainment to see how many plumbers get it wrong.
@@suqa2723 i've been plumbing for just about 15 years. from my experience, youtube videos that are trying to give tips or advice on how to "do plumbing" are terrible. there is only crap that you are sorting through. the small tricks are usually a shortcut not worth doing
Take my upvote! (also... here- let me fix your sentence for you: I'm an apprentice and these videos are pretty much the highlight of my day when I get home.)
Haha I feel you man. I grew up in the dessert of California and now I live in the mountains of California. It’s two different beasts on where you can run waterkines
That’s completely standard for most places in cali though. Everyone’s water service comes up on the exterior with a valve, hosebibb and then shoots inside
I love quarter turn valves for most applications because multi turn usually fails after a short time, rendering them useless. But for hose bibs, I only use freeze proof multi turn but usually install a quarter turn valve on that line for when harsh iowa winters destroy the hose bib. Nothing is worse than going for a quick job and a multi turn, causing the need to shut the entire building down.
@@bobbyhempel1513 I’ve probably seen 50 gate valves fail in my 4 years as and HVAC tech. Haven’t seen a single quarter turn ball valve fail. I’m sure there are some that will last decades, but overall they seem to break way more often. Maybe it has something to do with the hard water in my area, but either way I prefer a ball valve. Both for longevity and ease of use
Honestly when I heard him say that it pissed me off. A quarter turn is way better than a bulb valve. When I go to shut off the main to a house and i see a bulb valve i start sweating. I have barely ever seen a quarter turn valve fail
Makes sense. She’d probably like it kicked over at a 30 or 45 degree angle as well, but would resist that because it looks wrong. I’ve had very few customers who accept their hose bibs mounted this way, which is a shame because they are so much easier to use. (But they do look bad, so there’s that).
I do as well. Just had 2 surgeries to remove some bone and grind out the OA crust (medical term). I've been replacing all of the old galv. plumbing and using 1/4 turn valves for everything. Never thought about using one as hose bib. Sure makes it easier to give them a quick close/open at least once a year. I've run into so many gate valves in old homes that are completely 'frozen' as most home owners don't ever touch them.
@@stringlarson1247 ball valves are designed for on/off not for regulating flow. Neither are the gate valves you mention. That's why globe valves are used as hose bibs like the one he removed.
THE BEST PIPE WRENCHES EVER!! When I was a Building Superintendent, to remove a leaking heating unit and Gates, id use these along with a 12 in off set. Very strong and light weight!!
After watching most of your shorts, I oftentimes find myself talking, OUT LOUD, in that same voice that you use in your videos!!! I will talk to myself, my dog, my wife and even sometimes my two daughters in that same crazy ass voice. You ought to see the looks I get from the wife and kids when I do that. 99% of the time that I talk in that voice I get absolutely zero response from the wife and kids!!! 😂😂😂 Keep it up, it’s absolutely GOLDEN!!!
@@melissachartres3219crescent wrench wouldn't have worked. I actually was commenting about adjustable pliers not being used. Most videos and apprentices all use pliers. My journeyman would've lost his shit if I used tge pliers. The crescent wrench wouldn't grab either fitting properly.
@@unstablenester941 Hey there! Thanks kindly for the response! So... wasn't the hose bib tightened with a pair of channel-locks? Wouldn't the hose bib have been loosenable and tightenable with a crescent wrench? Both the original and the replacement hose bibs have hex collars on them for use with an open end style wrench, don't they? You think a crescent wrench is too wide and wouldn't fit in the space? I'm not following here.
Yeah, I wasn't clear on why change to the pliers, and in that case I would have used the crescent wrench before the pliers. Old hose bib was pretty rounded, pipe wrenches get it every time Where I live, if your wrench slips, there's a good chance that you will break another fitting, pipe wrench is best grip. In my experience anyway.
Been in trade 35 years you still give me some inspiration. Im such a cheap skate I got tools older than you boy! I gotta go by some new shit like you got!
Quarter turn hose bib = water hammer. Just something to keep in mind. I've found out the hard way. Closed one once and went inside to find a plastic water filter housing blew apart and was flooding a room.
You got some good tip man, love your videos, I’ve been doing plumbing for 20 years and your videos are proof you can’t know everything but it helps to know what you need to get the job done
Wanted to say that of course I love the voices, but I also like the occasional video without! I know everyone comments about them but don't feel like you have to force them every time my guy, your videos are good!
Thank-you…..new info! I didn’t know that 1/4 turn hose bibs existed on this type of hose bib! I use them on my 1/4 frost free and they are great! Thanks……
Brother your channel is awesome and your Sense of humor and Skills show the great things you know. You are awesome my brother keep up the good work and God-bless you great video. Hey boy good job 😂
I 100% agree with you with that 1/4 turn hose bib hard to use without hose attached. Water just doesn't come out straight and sprays all over when only partially opened. Also, standard hose bibs are much easier to rebuild. Ball valve has much higher chance of failure when frozen. Water gets trapped between ball and the seal and sometimes the seal blows out when frozen and it cannot be rebuilt.
Clever trick with the 1/2” nipple. I’m making my way through replacing the old valves at my house in south Florida where corrosion is a big issue making removing old fittings a PIA so this tip will be helpful . The plumbing troll voices are spot on!!!
@@rwood1995 Quit what? Quit stating the facts??? Like it does not make working at angles easier? In today’s age very few plumbers even have a decent BASIC set of pipe wrenches to begin with, much less specialty wrenches…They are not used, they are not needed, they are complete waste of time!!! I don’t know who you are, but I’m a self-employed 43 YEAR State Licensed Master Repair Plumber and the buck stops with me! This kid is complete overkill and 85% of everything he does is NOT the way to do it! His entire purpose is to display fancy equipment from manufacturers…. I’ve had 2 Ridgid aluminum pipe wrenches on my truck, 14 & 18 for 15 years and I only use them maybe three times a year…
Can i ask why you dont clean the inside of T fitting before you put the new one? I NEED to do this in Amsterdam netherlands. Really just asking no hate i love your work look at it evry day. love to you brother from another plumber🤙🏼💯❤
I have a hose bib that basically blasts high-pressure mist when it is just cracked open a little, but I put a female hose-end on a 6" chunk of hose and that slows the high-pressure blast & makes it usable. Not really plausible here where the bib is already so close to the ground.
Get a threaded ball valve and a pipe thread to hose bib connector. I took a ball valve and put those fitting on both sides ,and put it in between 2 hoses to act as a regulator for my sprinkler. I also use this set up for drains on water loops it works great. Now the only difference between what he has done and my way is my hose connection is the hose connection goes straight out instead of down like normal. This would be the answer for your situation.
We use 1/4 turn angle stops so why not use 1/4 turn bibs? They are better because I have never seen one leak or get stuck from corrosion. I have only ever seen the ones you have to twist 2 or more full rotations leak or get seized. How many 1/4 turn ball valves have you encountered that are seized and how many gate valves have you encountered that were seized?
Personal preference. When the bib is so close to the ground I will angle the outlet at a 45 degree or even horizontally to make hose attach and detach easier.
