I have a tall fescue lawn in Maryland. I did contact their US distributor . They told me the Edwin 2 is not for me, since I have tall fescue, They said the highest it cuts is a little below 2 inches. I cut 2.5 -3 inches depending on the time of year. I would really like one of these , however it cuts too short I was told.
The truth is that mower is not that off price wise. If you look at the reel mower market in the south a good reel mower eg Jacobsen or a toro reel (ones with a metal roller on the back) will set you back $1500 to $2000 and that’s used in good condition. The cheapest one on eBay is around $3000 used. Reel mowers are niche in America. And getting a battery one is an even bigger plus. Best part you can buy just the basic reel mower and add attachments as you go.
Wish I saw this 3 days ago just ordered a custom m Edwin that I’ll make a video on, when it comes. I do landscaping and this will be my only gas equipment. But because I made it custom, it was already super expensive. Probably another thousand for electric.
Love the mowers going electric. Gotta see if if an industrial designer can get the price of that down under $1000. Seems like it's possible. The market just doesn't seem like it's there at that price.
Has to be a wonderful experience to cut so well so quietly. The catcher looks a little heavy. You could easily make one out of plywood or plastic. Or even wire with a mesh cloth.
Love this mower but I can't justify the price. I'm just going to stick with my 40v Ryobi mower. Already have the other 40v lawn tools to go along with it anyway.
Not at all. Like he said in the video, it provides the best cut possible for grass. Doesnt matter if you have 1 strip of grass it still needs to be cut with a reel to be considered perfect.
It’s like purchasing a Kitchaid stand mixer or Kirby vacuum cleaner or Aerus or Rainbow vacuum. A SubZero refrigerator. Fine furniture is that way. Something that is made right will outperform and last most of your lifetime making it one of the most worthwhile purchases you make. I’ve always tried to make all of my purchases like that so that I never need to replace things.
Didn’t Michal say there was 5 to 7 thousand charge cycles? I would assuming that it would last way longer than 10 years. Where did you get that 10 year figure from?
I should have said at least 10 years based on their literature They state it could be a lifetime battery but I am a bit skeptical of that claim but I would be happy to be proven wrong.
It's really easy but I couldn't block the camera so I had to stand kinda of weird to do it. It just lifts off but I like to be head on to the machine when doing it normally.
I can't let my lawn get that long otherwise kids and the pets flatten it and it gets pretty rough. I personally mow between 2-3"/ From Seedland: Tall fescue grass for lawns should be mown at a height of 3" to 3.5" *For athletic fields, mow to a height of 2 to 3 inches*
You seem to be up on many things electrical. Question; if you have lithium or other types of rechargeable batteries, is there some kind of rule of thumb where you must completely drain them / used them or they will not charge to 100%? I have heard wives-tales about batteries not being able to be charged past say 80%, because you used them to 80% then put them on their charger. I don't have much knowledge of rechargeable batteries. You are correct batteries did suffer from memory, ni-cads especially from the older days. Lithium ion used in phones, computers today and these mowers do not have that issue so you can charge then for 5 min, 5 hours it won't affect their lifespan to any great extent.
I haven't they don't have any dealers up here. I have tried a California trimmer and it was a good machine but the cut was not as nice but you couldn't switch any attachments which is a big thing with this machine. I know some people love their TruCuts
Very neat mower! Wondering about what you would do with this when the blades get dull? It seems like nobody can sharpen reel mowers anymore now that they aren't popular.
Swardman has a oprepaid service where it is sent to directly to them, they sharpen it and return it to you. You usually need to do this once a year and you are right most local places only sharpen blades for professional courses and it can be hard for a homeowners. Swardmans service makes this easy and when I priced it out it was actually a little less than my local place that will sharpen reels abut didn't install a lot of confidence that it would come out right.
You can find out where good courses get their mowers sharpened and get a reel sharpened there. I did that last year for my McLane, a full sharpen (reel and bedknife) was $150
Never used a reel mower but, I do like the look of the cut for the health of the grass. Do you know of any models that will allow a longer cut? Say 2 1/2"?
They still sell their gas powered unit the Edwin 2.0 that cuts to 2 1/2" and is the same machine except uses an engine. It is a little less expensive too. Works very well for the exact situation you mentioned.
@@JM-yx1lm - Absolutely! It only cuts a 21.6" wide path. I've got about 2/3rds of acre to cut, and it'd take me over twice as long to cut my yard with this one, and I'd have to walk taboot. My walking behind a mower days are OVER! But this isn't my granddaddy's old reel mower from the 30's. I remember using that thing when I was a kid at the age of 5. And although I was big for my age, I could hardly push it to get it going. But once you got it going you better not stop, lol. This one has it's advantages for some folks I'm sure. Especially if you've got $$$$ to burn. But on the plus side, there's not nearly as much to go wrong on this Electric Mower as there is on my Zero-Turn Gravely. And it looks pretty easy to work on should something go wrong and it had to be repaired. But IMHO, it's just not practical for most folks.
Some things have changed in this space including the departure of Swardman's ceo and original founder. I also would prefer that they have more than one dealer in the US. @@SilverCymbal Very true Sir. The Swardman dealer is near Atlanta ... so it's close to me. Their program to send in the reels for sharpening is nice. I have investigated the Allett mowers also. Not a fan of their bed knife attachment system (two end bolts and a spot welded support bar), and the closet dealer (to me) is quite a ways away. We'll see. Pretty darn pricey though. I may just pick up a used Toro 1000.

@@SilverCymbal I have been using a commercial grade Honda rotary mower with decent results. However, I'm in the process of re-doing the lawn and changing from TTTF to a bermudagrass blend (Blackjack+Maya+ Yukon). I will be cutting fairly low. Luckily, it's a small lawn (about 3K) so I won't kill my tired old body. LOL I have never seen the Masport mower... pretty interesting. Like the rear roller. Pricewise, that is about what I paid for my Honda. Thanks for your feedback.

I was always surprised no one asked about that yet. You are exactly right! This one they stopped making that is all magnesium not steel so it's really light. I couldn't lift anything without it. Best part is I only paid $75 for it years ago at a yard sale. Good eye!
It's very hard to find reel sharpening locally so the US dealer has a certified firm that you just pop the blade out they use a prepaid mailer, they sharpen it perfect and return it to you pretty quickly too. They were charging less than a local place I found and it's easier to get done
No really, but I pick up specific high-profit landscaping jobs that helped pay for most of the Walker T25i I bought last year. I planned to do a video on this topic for making money but wasn't sure if people would watch it so I held off.
Did you evaluate the Allett Liberty 43? It costs about $1K less than the Swardman, has similar attachments and uses a removable GreenWorks battery that you can buy anywhere for $100. My main concern with the Electra is buying a $3000 battery with a mower attached to it. What do you do when that battery fails?
Very nice mower and great content but the price is out of the world. I could buy a two toro mowers, a edger and a weed eater and still have 2000 grand left. Come on that price is way too much.
Lots of folks can afford a lawn service, but have a passion for creating/ maintaining a great lawn themselves. It’s their therapy, and a moment to let their OCD shine. If you want to do it right, the Swardman is the best.

Good service is hard to find. My own experience is that no one is going to care about my lawn and yard the way I do. This mower is for people who really care about the quality of cut and are mowing 3 or 4 times a week. You can't get a lawn service to come that often.
Up until 1975, power reel mowers were a dime a dozen. Rotory mowers were very expensive to buy. The thought of being able to mow ones lawn once a week with a rotory mower instead of 2 or 3 times a week with a reel mower was more appealing, especially if you had more than a acre to mow, like my family had.
People buy riders all the time that cost that plus a lot more and I understand they are bigger but not necessarily better. This is a great fit for someone who wants that perfect lawn and might be cutting on the very low (under 2") side. Other mowers just can't do it and combine the ability to take attachements that are $1k plus each and it's actually a good deal IF you need the above. You need the right machine for your budget and situation.
