Thanks for the adjustable platform idea. Pretty slick. Love that they store flat. I have been using a T bracket. And just shimming top or bottom to level it on the tree. It works but a pain to store. Great job on the videos. Keep them coming.

If you stated it, I missed it, but are you making the spacer boxen out of 1x6s or 1x4s? I can't really tell from the video either. You say how long the sides are, but not how tall. I really like your video production values as well as the information!
@DuckRiverHoney
@DuckRiverHoney 3 года назад
Thanks! You could do either really. A 1x4 will give you a 45ish Liter box and I bet a 1x6 would be in the 57L range. I’ve got some 1x4s, some 2x2, and a few shallow supers and a few bait hives are using a medium as a spacer. I like a variety of sizes, especially if putting multiple traps in one location.

Hi Nath, I’m a hobbiest bee keeper. Thanks for the idea for the swarm boxes and stands. I live in tropical North Queensland Australia. It’s plenty hot mid 30’s and humid up here but truely a slice of paradise. I’m enjoying all the videos. My first experience with bee hives was grade 7 with our old neighbour and his hive. He spun honey and taught me all about bee keeping. I was hooked. Many years past and I finally got my own hive. I would drive 2 hrs to an old bee keeper and absorb any and all his knowledge. I did this for a few years before getting the hive. Now I pass on what I have learnt to my three little boys. They love it. Looking forward to many more vids.

nice video any videos of you baiting the traps? I clicked the bell i been trying this for 2 years and excited for this year i have had bees check out my traps so many times and look promising then they are gone 1st year had one trap 2nd year had 9 traps but got them out late because was waiting on frames to ship so i think that really messed me up so hopefully this year will be better ;)

I’m planning a two part location video plus a two part baiting video. Locations I have most everything planned out but we’re about to get hammered by weather. May be 2-3 weeks or so on the baiting video. Hoping to get locations done next week but weather may slow me down.

Getting closer to that time of year. Yesterday I realized what I could do with an old bee box I found on the side of the road. Was one of those duh moments why I didnt think of it sooner. A swarm trap. Just have to replace one broken side with plywood and the other two sides And it already smells of bees. LOL

If anyone is wanting to make a lot of these. You can find find the quick link carabiners, s hooks, ferrules, and aircraft cable for cheap if you buy it from a trapping/snare supply house. F&T Supply is one. They are way cheaper and better quality than what you would buy from a big box store like Home Depot or Lowe’s.

52 week high 1670 current 827 ... it is on a downward trend again recently after climbing through the winter. Hopefully that continues downward... I've been using scraps and pieces I already had on hand to build my first hives, but when I want to expand I'm going to start running out of materials pretty quickly. I'd like to build some traps too and see if I can catch anything this year, but that means building more equipment for those bees too lol.

Do you have wasp move in to your traps, and do you check inside of them to remove them. Here in Missouri I look in them every Saturday to kill the wasp, almost every box will have wasp, I am not sure if this is necessary. But when I’m ready to pull them down I don’t have huge wasp nets.
@DuckRiverHoney
@DuckRiverHoney 2 года назад
I have small ones occasionally, and I have had one large umbrella wasp nest. I don't pull traps down to deal with them though, and I catch bees.

Excellent video. I built 3 of the swarm traps stands based on your design and I have them up and they work great. I am a hammock camper so I is used a tubular nylon strap around the tree (loop on one end) and tied a Becket hitch. I pushed the Becket hitch (knot) through a 1.25" hole in the top of the stand and let it hang from the knot (used a 3/16" steel rod as the toggle in the hitch). I tied another strap around the tree a little below the top to make sure the stand did not swing in the wind. I don't like putting nails in my trees. Also I hate painting just like you (from you recent painting video) so I tried the Eco Wood product that I have seen on other beekeeper videos. Using this method I could dip the end grains of the 2 x 4 into the Eco Wood and it goes on like water because is mostly is water and you only use one coat/treatment (versus primer and 2 coats of paint). Also there is no odor or vapors. I'll let you know how long it lasts but it sure beats painting.
@DuckRiverHoney
@DuckRiverHoney 3 года назад
That’s interesting! I’ve used hammocks a fair bit as well. I’m a camper, backpacker, and backpack hunter as well as beekeeper. Mostly these days I’m a Dad. Keep me posted how the Eco Wood does....if it lasts half as long but is way easier, may be worth it.

Spot price of lumber today is $1,010 - wow. Loving the builds and the swarm trap videos. Be careful wearing gloves around power saws. If a blade catches them it can pull your hand in.
@DuckRiverHoney

Lumber is so high I'm buying a sawmill...LOL. Thanks for the kind words. I know gloves are a danger with saws. I'm terrified of table saws and chainsaws, so I give them a lot of respect. I use them both a lot, but I know those are the two tools most likely to hurt me.

Just a year. I researched for about 18 months prior to starting though. I grew up on a part time farm and got a couple degrees in Ag Econ, then worked in Ag Finance before leaving to start a business. So I had a healthy background in ag before starting which I think helps.

Well that was easy!! I just ordered the nail puller, cable cutter, and magnetic bar through your links!! They will be here Friday so my husband gets the nail puller for Valentines, since he takes nails out of pretty much every board on the farm. I get the other 2 items 😉, his shop is too messy to have room for the magnetic bar. My new barn has plenty of room for it 😂. We replaced our front porch deck a few years ago and obviously saved all the old boards. He’s going to be so excited that I will now have a use for them!! Excellent idea using deck boards for the trap platform. Thank you Nathan!!

They’re a short spacer I put under a medium super to make a swarm trap. Ups the volume to the correct range plus gives the bees empty space which they like. Check out my last video- it explains it well. Thanks!

Keep the videos coming!! Go check out the video on making the jig. I made the jig and bought a frame jig (make sure the follow boards are loose enough). Kids and I put 36 mediums and 200 frames together in about 6-8 total hours. The gluebot linked above payed for itself in the first hour. I had never used a nail/staple gun. We have more frames coming and will build some spacers from used lumber for swarm traps. I could see other uses for the spacers.

Good idea for unique placements for swarm traps. I made a few standard holders prior to last year's swarm season and got tired of lugging all the different materials around and switched completely to French cleats. Just leveled cleat, drilled, hung, and off to the next. I could have strapped them down but there was no need.

Thanks for the video. Question: is there a minimum distance from your bee yard that you set up your traps? I thought that I heard they should be at least 3 miles away or the bees can become confused when you move them to your yard.
@DuckRiverHoney
@DuckRiverHoney 3 года назад
You have to catch them to worry about moving them. And yes you do have to worry about reorienting if you move them a short distance. I moved 7 swarms last year that ended up less than 1 mile from where they were caught. All 7 had some foragers go back to the tree, but really it wasn't too bad. I put a bunch of weeds and sticks in front of the entrance to try to force them to reorient. You can also move them to an outyard for a few weeks and then move them home.
