I received this lovely palette of Japanese gansai paints from Dominic for Christmas and this is the first time I've tried them! He ordered this set from Choosing Keeping, a unique stationery and art supplies shop in London. In this video I'll swatch each colour and share my thoughts on the colour selection and why I enjoy using these paints so much.

Thank you for calling the Kuretake paint rocks what they are, and not inks, watercolours or gouaches, as I usually see. Kuretake is a great brand with a wonderful quality, but if people starts comparing Gansai Tambi (Rocks of Colour) with other Western products, that wouldn't be fair for a japanese product quite different from other things. Sorry for this intervention, but as a Japan's lover, I couldn't stand without my own ķuretake (Give and Take). Kisses

A late comment but oh my! I have been transported to stationery and art supply heaven 🤩😍. Natasha I love watching your videos and have just started my journey in watercolour and mixed media. I love your recommendations as well as your artwork and gentle calming process but this one for Choosing Keeping …… Wow! I live in Somerset but now want to go to London on the strength of losing myself in their beautiful shop after checking out their website. Thank you 🙏🏻😊🤗x

Lots of good comments and I’m the first to give it a like? You’re the first person to swatch with circles instead of squares. A real surprise that works. These look like luscious easily rewetting paints. Thanks 🤩

@NatashaNewtonArt 3 года назад
Ah, no you're not the first! On some of my videos I've clicked the setting that says something like, "do not show the number of likes/dislikes". This means that people can still like or dislike it but they can't see the total number. You've made me curious now so I'm going to have a look in my dashboard to see how many it has...383 likes and 1 dislike so far! And yes, these paints are so juicy and creamy - lovely to work with! 🖤

I think Choosing Keeping commissioned the themes of the sets they sell, I have all four of the saesonal Gansai sets,my favourite is the Atumn set, but the Spring set has some lovely colours. I love the idea of themed sets of colours, because they contain colours you may not have thought of yourself.All of the saesonal sets work well together and I work with all of them.The packaging of all the sets is also beautiful too.These paints have a richness that sets them apart from other watercolours.I think these are my now go to paints. I hope this set continues to inspire you. I found I loved the first themed set of these paints so much I had to get all the others and I'm really glad I did.I decided to get a set of chinese calligraphy brushes too, and they hold a lot of water/pigment which for how I paint is perfect. They are weighted in such a way that you hold them by the end to paint with them,for these paints they are the perfect brush. The way you swatch the colours in circles makes me think of those coloured dot paintings by Damien Hirst.
@NatashaNewtonArt
@NatashaNewtonArt 3 года назад
I agree - I thought the same thing! I love that these sets introduce particular colours that you may not have thought of using before, or considered combining. I would love to try all of the seasonal sets but I think I'll have to wait and save up for them. (I've spent a lot of money on art supplies over the past few months!). The calligraphy brushes sound interesting too. I have a couple of the Japanese watercolour paintbrushes from Choosing Keeping; they work really well with the natural pigment inks. Aaaahhhhh, so many nice things in that shop!

I love the circles. I have 2 sets of these paints but have never seen a seasonal set. When I finally get set up to start painting again I think I'll be using them. I have a set of 36 plus the Gem Set of 6 iridescent colours. It's a shame they are not lightfast. I was a bit worried they might b e too much like gauache but you seem to use them as usual transparent water colour. Thanks for the video.
@NatashaNewtonArt
@NatashaNewtonArt 3 года назад
They're great because they can be used like watercolour or more opaque like gouache. Certain colours are lightfast and others aren't, so you'll have to do your own lightfast tests to be sure!

I realised recently I have all the sets of Gansai paints in my cache,all the season themed sets and retro themed sets and the tinted blacks set from Choosing Keeping,then from Amazon the large 48 colours set, the 6 golds set, the 6 pearlescent set and the six jewel colours metallic set. I'm keeping all of them because I love this paint (though I'm giving away all my other branded watercolours) because you can use it transparently like regular watercolour or more opaquely like gouache,so they are great for mixed media and on toned papers too even black.The boxes the ones from choosing keeping that the paints come in are so beautiful too,as is the box from the 48 set on Amazon.

@@NatashaNewtonArt Thank you,not really it's just built up a bit over the years that's all,My branded watercolours have found a new home with an artist friend.I think sometimes when we reorganise our studio space we think 'Oh my,I do have a lot of stuff!!!' But I must admitt watching youtube results a lot in me thinking about trying/getting new mediums and I do think there is a slight element of addiction when it comes to new paints,pencils etc! But I kept al the Gansai paints as I really love them especially the tinted blacks!!
@NatashaNewtonArt
@NatashaNewtonArt 3 года назад
@@avirtualcanvas7584 Ha ha, I know this feeling! But I think that when it's your work and your passion, it's natural to be curious about new supplies....so you buy them to try them out, and then before you know it, you have so much stuff!

@@NatashaNewtonArt It's so true!,but I've got a bit better at it,I tend to have a definaite idea in my mind for a painting or series of works and will buy new mediums for this. Like say Inktober this year, hence trying handmade ink from a shop on Etsy.I do think at the moment the fact I'm in recovery,means I'm indulging myself in new suplies a little more than normal!!! well that's my excuse!! ha ha

Beautiful paints for a sketchbook or work that’s to be printed, but unfortunately very few have an acceptable lightfast rating for professional paintings to be hung on a wall.
@NatashaNewtonArt
@NatashaNewtonArt 3 года назад
Yes, one has to be very careful - some have good lightfastness and some don't. But as you say, they can be used in a sketchbook and they're such lovely paints! I love them.
