That was entertaining. I always enjoy hearing what people from other countries think of America and our culture. I like how you talk about a given subject then you hit on something and slowly wonder into a thought. Thank you, I enjoyed watching. :-)
Fika is awesome! I am an American of Swedish heritage with quite a few Swedish friends. I'm glad you had the opportunity to live here in the USA and enjoy it. Thanks for sharing your experience!
Emelie; I don't know why you say in your description that your video is pretty bad because I enjoyed it very much. I'm glad that you enjoyed living in the US as much as you did and hope you have an opportunity to return in the future.
Every state is different. I've heard that some states do charge for books (a friend from Arkansas says they do), but this doesn't happen where I've lived in MN or NJ.
I know you are talking about high school but I should add, the Elementary schools here in SoCal even provide all school supplies like pencils, pens, glue, ipads, paper, crayons. They ask only that you bring a backpack and lunch (or sign up for free lunch program). They don't even ask the parents to bring even a pencil for the child, everything is provided free.
I am an american and a mom to four daughters and two stepsons I don't allow boys in my daughters' room or girls in the boys room because to me it is not appropriate a bedroom is kind of like a private personal space to me.I also know that when kids reach a certain age they get curious and want to try out certain things and some things to me are meant for grown ups to do even though I know kids will do what they do no matter how hard you might try to prevent things I as a parent want to instill good morals in my children. teenage pregnancy and teenage parenthood is not easy.how can they support children if they are not old enough to get a job? I want to teach my children to be responsible.I also want them to be with a gentleman which means someone who brings them flowers not because they have to but because they care enough about them to make an effort . it is nice if the guy pays the first few dates but I personally don't look at it as they have to do it more as if they like the person they will want to treat them to dinner.I also don't mind paying. for me a relationship is supposed to be both people making effort.once my children are able to work they can date. I am strict when it comes to what they wear to me as long as their body is covered they can wear whatever style they want.I know other parents and places are different and that is fine for them. I want my kids to be somewhat modest
I went to public school in the US, and only had to pay for a book if I lost it. I did graduate in 1994 (I don't know if that had anything to do with it).
tank tops was the word for the mens shirts. The needing to buy books/supplies thing varies by state. At least when I went to school we were given books and the only supplies we had to buy were pens/paper.
It's actually called a muscle shirt, or at least that's what my friends called it! As for paying for classes, I had to pay fees for supplies for classes like art and physics!
1) not every American school has a dress code 2) The U.S. is huge 3) in some Western countries (as well as Japan and Korea) school uniforms are the norm. In the U.S, it depends on the school
I've already answered a question like this.. But I was wrong, I didn't have to pay for the books specifically but for some of my classes like physics and art because of the material that would be used during the courses.
Emelie - fantastic video! I am retired american man, single, and would like to go visit Sweden someday. Your video has helped me understand much more about Swedish culture and people. What do you suggest for me to maybe meet a nice Swedish lady when I visit Sweden? Thank you!
Did they mostly go to school in Utah? There's a weird Mormon influence there that isn't common anywhere else in the states. BYU (the main Mormon university) has a really weird code of conduct that isn't at all representative of the US at large.
Do you mean dress code like don't wear shorts that show your ass, or dress code like you have to wear a specific type of clothes? The former is common, the latter is not in my experience.
So if dating isn't a thing in Sweden then how do people get into relationships? A lot of Europe sounds like what happens in the northern US states as the north also has a reputation of being more cold, not really speaking to strangers.
I know this is an old comment, but I don't know if anyone has told you: Utah is the home to Mormonism and is extremely conservative as a result. It's not uncommon for parents to not want teen boys/girls to spend the night, but usually closing the door isn't an issue. There are some more liberal states (the major cities in Colorado are fairly liberal), but Utah is basically the most conservative just as a result of Mormonism being more conservative than any Protestant denomination. Also liked the video. It's always cool to learn other people's perspectives on things.
I lived in Salt Lake for nearly ten years. Nice people, but that's not the real America... Things get a bit messier once to leave that Mormon enclave. Also I think there are prettier places than the high desert...where the blowing dust never seems to stop.
We have ficah(?)or hang out at coffee shops, is what we call it. It's okay, but people don't do it that much anymore. There's too much other things to do now. Movies, Internet, Restaurants, etc.
Glad you enjoyed the US. I don't remember seeing you here though. But if you said you were here we'll have to take it as just that. Come back & see us some time. Don't be a stranger.
Yes. Most schools have a dress code. You can't go to school with your ass hanging out or belly showing. No underwear showing. If your school didn't have these rules then I bet it was a dump.
but at the same time a lot less. More europeans I know get with a boyfriend in highschool or university and stay with them forever. In US, we date A LOT. From living in the US and Europe, in highschool it is more puritanical in the states, but adult life is much, much more free and liberated in the USA.
Aesthetic is right. In some ways, Americans are more traditional due to the Puritanical religious influences the USA was founded on. Europe, especially Northern Europe, is becoming more secular, less religious than the USA.
You actually met people here who don't realize Sweden is a country?? How ignorant!! I live in a city in Illinois which historically had a huge Swedish population. We even have a very popular Swedish restaurant. Nowadays not many Swedes come over in recent decades, if any. But, it has diversified to where there are 115 of so countries in our immigrant community.
It's not typical in america to have a dress code. You had a fairly unique high school experience. If I had to guess you probably were in the middle of the country or the south.
haha.. thast i like european culture ..they are more open..although the thing about when you see your neiborght and you hide.. made laugh haha. . 😂 but is bad . in my opnion.. welll.. i liked your ofc you look nice! greetings from colombia! 😉😊😍😘
The guy pays if the guy asks you out. If you asked him out, then you would pay. Girls asking guys out is significantly less common, admittedly. Perhaps because girls can get dates without needing to work up the nerve to ask somebody out. If they just wait, guys will inevitably ask them out.
The only thing I can agree with you is on that you guys are pretty anti social and too yourselves and the fact that you guys start dating pretty young and are allow to have your bfs over and etc
Sweden exist...kinda. No you don’t have to pay for school books. Sleeping over with a boyfriend at 13!?! Are you nuts? This is followed by a bizarre social phobia of not getting too close to someone at a bus stop ?
If you see a mens white "Tank top" or "Muscle shirt" in America it's usually called a "Wife beater." If you watch a show or a movie and there's a guy in it that's beating his wife, most likely he's wearing one. That's where it got its name from. :D
It mostly comes from the show COPS because low class/ poor people would always be wearing a white tank top undershirt/wife beater and they would always be arrested for domestic violence usually involved large amounts of Alcohol and occurring in Trailer parks.
I stopped watching when you felt compelled to convince me Sweden exists as if me being an American implies I question the veracity to your claim of being Swedish... Do you realize how condescending you sound?
