Into Europe: IKEA is a Swedish company that has an image as a fun, carefree brand, and with its restaurants serving Swedish meatballs, its coffee, and cinnamon buns, it has exported Sweden.
So how did IKEA export Sweden?

I live in Romania and my grandmothers village has been plagued by illegal logging since the past 20 years. Recently its gotten a little better, however much of the forest in the area is completely gone. There have been many landslides too which caused damage to some houses. Learning that this wood goes to Ikea has made me change my mind about the company.

I was alarmed upon hearing this, as i have a friend who is romanian, who has mentioned this as well, though i didnt know ikea was involved. To be honest tho, its likely the romanian government is more to blame for the lack of regulation, rather than various companies taking advantage of that. That's kinda the point of having governments poking their nose in private companies business in the first place, in a capitalistic society. If you don't have regulations, you get the USA XD
@Luredreier
@Luredreier Год назад
@@sandercohen5543 True to some degree. But there's a number of reasons why that's not enough. Sometimes companies misbehave and there's no way for a country to do anything about it as a goverment. That's why we forced Wizz Air out of Norway through boycotts for instance... And the Danes managed to bring McDonalds ro heel with strikes, not laws.

I went to many furniture stores. IKEA usually has the best price for value. If you want to have something better, prices quadruple. If you buy something for the same price at another store, it often lacks behind in quality. I don’t say ikea has any more moral than any other company. Spend over 9 years working for them, a lot of that in product quality and safety, left as probably one the most knowledgeable persons on their product range. It is far from a perfect company and in my time it was clear they moved more and more towards profit focus over other things, but they also do try to do good things and while again far from perfect, they exceed most other companies. I liked their social stuff a lot to, mandating maximum working hours for all suppliers and more, when they introduced that some really big names stopped doing business with them as they didn't want to meet those requirements. In the end though a company is a company and they are driven to make profit and expand in as many places as they can. IKEA is one of the largest real estate owners around, from offices to hotels they own them all over the world. There is a lot more going on ofcourse, but I will leave it at this, but yeah if you ever want to do a research project on the true size, scope and influence of a company, IKEA makes for a quite interesting subject.

The thing about IKEA is that when I get an idea for some type of obscure type of furniture that would work in my apartment, IKEA seems to have it. I’ll be like “hmm, I wonder if someone makes [x] type of furniture” and it’s 90% of the time available in that exact (or really close to) format in IKEA, and not available in that type anywhere else in the country I live in.

@@mortenlund1418 Glad to have a patriot here, but Sweden right now is (I agree) in somewhat of a mess. The right and the racist far-right rule in informal coalition; the state-owned lumber company is cutting down vast swathes of wood in the name of "biofuel"; Swedish MEPs, from being somewhat of a leader in EU on the Green Deal, are now told to vote against numbers of environmental measures the former government improved. We have one of the greatest income gaps (super-rich vs. average people) in Europe. The welfare system, like the school system and like mass transport, has been largely sold off to private interests. So although I love Sweden dearly, I find some things that do need to be turned around soon... We are the ones who should try a little more, perhaps.

@Rotwold

Because the video doesn't state why Sweden has an unhealthy relationship with IKEA, more so why people like it and why global brands can be harmful. The title is somehow completely detached from the content of the video, and anything that cover how people see IKEA seems to be how it is viewed outside of Sweden. My experience is that Kamprad is viewed as a great entrepreneur but also someone that avoid taxes and that he had nazi sympathies (like many other in Sweden during 1930-40's). The title sound like IKEA is damaging to Sweden, but the video is more about how a global corporation try to ignore any criticism and not pay taxes. I'm not hating on the video and its content but the title is misleading.

Why??? What??? Are you living in civilized Europe? If yes, do you know why you have democracy, a filled stomac and education for free? Further, if you want, you can move forward during effort. You can give your relatives a better future. Or would you rather live in the third world? Here they burn down the city every couple of years - just to be sure to stay poor. Companies like Ikea is what gives Europe some kind of income. Please consider the value of great companies and what they mean for civilization.

Thank you for sharing this video. It is great to see your European stuff and I hope you will somehow turn your left-wing stuff off. If Europe is going to have any place on Earth in the future, we must celebrate our successes - wich is, you guessed it, our great companies who turn raw material into profit during ingenuity, hard work and brilliancy. Let us be sure we have something to sell to the rest of the world or we will end up like all the poor socialist states who makes sure only the political elite has all the benefits - until it all slides. Like Leonid Brezhnev who lived splendid and just after his dead, of old age, it all fell apart. Believe me, he knew what was comming.

How can it export Sweden, when all they sell is made in cheap labour countries and nothing is made in Sweden?

Check your facts before you accuse. About a third of IKEA production is still made in Sweden. Design and quality standards are still 100% swedish. IKEA has ceased all business in russia, yet is still paying all the employees.
@dirkgonthier101
@dirkgonthier101 2 года назад
@@Bluepeter62 Well, I doubt it very much that one of IKEA's furniture is still made in Sweden. Ther price against which it's been sold, makes it almost impossible. Sure, IKEA sells also posters from a.o. Jonna Jinton. I have no problems in believing that they're made in Sweden. That the design and quality standards are still Swedish, I'm ready to believe. Although, IKEA sells a lot of items which remain sub-standard on the quality field. This could be justified by the price they ask for it. I always thought that the Nordic countries and Germany had more or less the same policy towards quality. Apparently not. That IKEA has ceased business in Russia, has nothing to do with the matter at hand. I still say that IKEA sells mostly products made in cheap labour countries.

Swedish culture is my opinion not Scandinavian. Nor viking unlike the Danes Icelanders and Norwegians Swedish culture is Baltic along with its long eastern territory of Finland . And Germany is in fact culturally Baltic too. Sweden has influenced German culture throughout the Prussian way. Prussia is very important to German mainstream culture and values. My theory is that millitarism and it's post trauma connects Swedish culture and German culture, in fact along with the Baltic states who are mostly long been ruled under germans and swedes . In fact all these countries if you emphasize Germany on Prussia, they ruled most of the Baltic waves. (with gdansk and st Petersburg as part of the slavic world.) what they have in common is theur cultural norms are Rational, self disciplined but rather more collectivist and Conforming.

Excuse me, but when did Sweden ruled Lithuania (which is a Baltic country)?
@TheHollandHS
@TheHollandHS Год назад
@@Kamane-bee Lithuania is indeed a bit different from Latvia and Estonia because of its close historical relationship with Poland. But in comparison to Poland Lithuania has been influenced by Protestant belief and German nobles, also sharing a border with Prussian territories close to Konigsberg. Poland only had a tiny bit of sea and one coastal harbor Gdansk in history until 1945.
