On this channel we like to do a lot of dogfighting most videos are some sort of dogfight between 2 different aircraft as we explore their different capabilities. From time to time I like to dabble in Virtual Reality, I think VR is a great new technology and I love to show that stuff off for the channel from time to time.
If you enjoy war thunder or Microsoft flight simulator 2020 or even dogfighting in Battlefield 2042, consider getting yourself into Digital Combat Simulator by Eagle Dynamics, the Combat side of Aviation with the BVR and Dogfights really provides a different and interesting perspective on aviation. You can fly all kinds of combat aircraft including the F-16, F-15, F-14, JF-17, Su-27, Mig-29, Mirage and the F-18 Hornet along with many other aircraft and helicopters like the Ka-50 and Mi-8.

The systems of the fighter Viggen are still classified, since a lot of it was put into the JAS 39 Gripen. DCS will probably not develop one without full access to its capabilities.

I spoke with Sven the other day, since we are both Swedish. He used to build furniture's for IKEA. But that was not a job with a future, he went over to SAAB as an engine tuner. His role is more like a flight engineer, where he tries to fix stuff on the fly, so to say. In stressful situations he tends to replace his allen key with his trusty pipe wrench. He is not that physical, and that is why he needs to take a brake after a long series of "calibrating" the engine. Sven is 32 years old, he lives in the suburbs of Stockholm with his girlfriend Inga and his dog Gripen.

The problem is less with the engine itself and more with the intakes, IIRC. Above a certain angle of attack, the intakes can't pull in enough air and you get compressor stalls. Fly in a straight line where the engine can get plenty of air, and it apparently can haul ass.

@@vicroc4 This is not true the JA-37(Fighter/interceptor variant of the viggen) has the same intakes but an upgraded engine Volvo RM8B instead of Volvo RM8A. The RM8B engine is more powerful and does not have any compressor stalling problems.

A guy in Gävle, Sweden has two complete nose sections each of an AJS37 and a J35 in his living room. Fully functional and original Saab cockpits. The stick shaker on the Viggen, which warns against excessive AoA, is incredibly aggressive. Just wondering how long a pilot could put up with that punishment on his hand for. Obviously not something which can be modelled in DCS…

I thought it was always a shame that we only have the AJ-37 in DCS. The JA-37 would be incredible to play, massively less prone to compressor stalls, internal 30mm KCA with much higher velocity than the Akan's, AMRAAM's and better Radar plus more reliable and powerful engine.

I have always liked the Viggen, And even the Drakken and Grippen. I never realized how capable they were as dogfighters more than just interceptors or ground attack aircraft! But mostly i'm a Tomcat person :)

The Viggen did well in a classic interceptor configuration. Using the predictable patterns SR-71's used on missions from England to the Murmansk peninsula, Viggen pilots were able to technically get a "lock on" passing SR-71's. Doing so without using the predictable patterns (refuel points, flightpaths, et cetera) and actually being able to hit it with an AAM would have been a different story though.

They were doing it using data-link (second generation, Draken had the first), got all info speed, angle, ... As they did not need own radar to find and navigation to the SR-71 got no advance warning...

You should do the US vs Russia thing again but with the rule that you can't choose the same jet twice so it's more interesting. Do like 5 or 6 rounds so you can have different engagements. Also make it bandit unknown so you have to choose your jet carefully.

As we can see in this video's demonstration a lot depends on the pilot's skill at piloting the aircraft properly and also the ability to read and know your enemy's weakness and work alongside that and GS made a spectacular demonstration in this video.

Sven is an absolute mad lad. He only stops banging that engine when it either works correctly or he's looking for a bigger wrench to keep banging it back to life. He never quits on you. Never ejects. And when the dust settles - he doesn't blame you for losing the dogfight; he stands up, puts the fire he's on down, silently pats you on the back, gives you thumbs up, and starts walking towards the nearest viggen. Again, and again, and again. And when you finally win... He's there. Probably banging the engine, in silence. But smiling. He always believed in you. Always.

@@Anarchy_420 That would be pretty cool. The Sabre would have at least one of the same problems it had with the MiG-15: a tough hide. The pilot would have to stay on target even longer to bring it down. Also like the MiG, the A-10 has a huge gun, so if he does manage to get one hit, you're dead. Of course the Saber is a lot more maneuverable and the A-10 can't climb as hard as the MiG. Now, consider the Saber going against the Skyhawk. Both are single engine non-afterburning planes, from times close enough for one to easily remember the other, maybe even close enough to meet. The Skyhawk would be like a MiG on steroids, able to climb like mad as long as it isn't carrying bombs. It will have a more powerful engine than the Saber, more powerful guns, and is probably even more nimble (and that's saying a lot!) This would be a real challenge for the Saber.

They're probably pretty damn close which would make it a close and good matchup however I mentioned The SU-25 bc it is not maneuverable like The A-10 and F-86, SU-25 would have to rely on speed and so it could be an offset matchup lol which I always find interesting to watch! The engine problem seems EXTREMELY exaggerated... And i'm saying that as someone who has had friends who flew this plane. And the airforce here, pilots do a lot of very serious practise, enough so that a Viggen was lost in accidents occasionally, because it's considered worth it to train realistically. But while "not a great dogfighter plane" is common knowledge, they DO train for it and they absolutely did not have such common engine issues. Out of the crashes due to training i can recall, i think only one or possibly two were due to engine problems, and that's like 2-5% of the total(40? IIRC) or something.

I don't know how many of you are aware of this, but the thumping sound being heard from the engine is actually the compressor/s stalling and the flame front from the combustion room shooting out through the intake. Obviously this is an extremely destructive process. LE: You don't need to lower the AOA much, just a bit , to allow the engine to breathe. The plane will perform better. Also, exceding the the maximum coefficient of lift will result in a worse turning plane, not better.

Yup. GS is probably not going to learn or read your comment. You can't dogfight without an engine. You kill your engine, you lose.
