Learn how to make Swedish Chocolate Balls (Chokladbollar)! They say that these super easy, no-bake, chocolate/oatmeal treats are the first thing a Swedish child learns to make, which makes sense. What doesn’t make sense is that these aren’t the first thing an America child learns to make. Let’s change that. Visit foodwishes.blo... for the ingredients, more information, and many, many more video recipes. I really hope you enjoy this simple Swedish Chocolate Balls (Chokladbollar) recipe!

Home made, these are almost always tiny in size (since they have a strong flavour, and you get more of them), and quite often rolled in nib sugar not coconut flakes, also I never seen anyone use vanilla extract in them, nor coconut oil. I guess both can be used, and I think we all just make them as we learnt it as kids. PS. If you're lazy you can also just make the dough/batter/whatever and bring the bowl to the sofa and eat it with a spoon :)

Swede here as well. Someone mentioned before that one can cover them in sugar pearls, but it's really about which tradition you prefer. Most cafés sell them with coconut flakes these days and that's what I'd like to use as well. I'd have to agree that it's better to only use butter & not heat up the oatmeal, it's easier and tastes better. My advice is to use your hands to make the chocolate balls. It will improve the texture because you won't feel the oatmeal as much. Plus it will heat up the butter if you're not into waiting for the room temperature to do its thing. If you're a bit on the wild side, you can freeze any leftovers because if you bite into a half frozen chocolate ball you can almost imagine the taste of chocolate ice cream. Thank you chef for this interesting video!

Honestly the idea of having one of these for breakfast feels very weird to me. They're very, very firmly in the fika & dessert category for me! Kind of like if you'd suggest eating a brownie for breakfast. Now, a lussekatt (Swedish saffron bun) or kanelbulle (Swedish cinnamon bun, which is VERY DIFFERENT from a US one), heated up to simulate that freshly baked feel, and had with a tall glass of milk? That's an advent breakfast I can get behind, especially if I have time to catch the TV (or radio) Christmas calendar as well. (The saffron buns are exclusively for the Christmas season (so if course they're in stores already 😒), but cinnamon buns are just as perfect in the summer with a glass of cordial 💖)

EMERPUS EMEM: His pronunciation was closer to the Swedish than your suggestion. The sj-/skj-/stj- sound doesn’t exist in English, so his attempt became a sort of h- or Spanish j-sound. The better choice would be to go for the ”tj-” (or k followed by a soft vowel) sound which even some Swedish dialects do. That’s closer to the sh- sound in English (so shoklad or shocklad would be a better visual representation for an English speaker). No one in Sweden would pronounce choklad (or any other Swedish word) with an English ch-sound.

I agree with previous speakers that it is part of the Swedish food pyramid. Apparently it's been around for quite some time in Sweden. It is first advertised in a newspaper in 1918. So it has probably been made some time before that. It is certainly a traditional swedish pastry. I love it. But I try not to make to often. But I wouldn't dream of having it for breakfast.

As a swede, I approve of this recipe. I also commend the valiant effort at pronouncing "chokladbollar", I know english speakers usually have a problems with the pronounciation of the "sch" sound in the beginning of "choklad" as well as in "sju" (the swedish word for the number 7).

Thank you for spreading the Swedish culture! ❤ I never seen a version with coconut oil, salt and cayenne before. Also if you want them easier to form add just a little bit of the coffee at a time so that it doesn't get too wet. I always use hot coffee to melt the butter since I never have the patience to wait until it gets room temperature. Also, and I'm sure you know this already, but they are so not healthy. 😂 But perfect for an afternoon "fika" (=tea or coffee time).

Alright so as a Swede myself, I need to come with my opinion on the matter. Whilst some ingredients and execution (coconut oil, toasting oats, vanilla extract and unsurprisingly the cayenne) are not a common thing, this was quite accurate. One thing that is unheard of though is mixing this with a spoon and/or spatula. Chokladbollar should always be mixed with your hands and if you doesnt look like youve just put your hands into a pile of dirt, you are definently doing something wrong You can also choose what you want to coat the balls with. Pearl sugar, coconut, sprinkles, you name it

Classic recipe is: 100g butter, 1dl sugar, 2 tbs cocoa powder, 1 tsp vanilla sugar, 2 tbs cold strong coffee. For garnish: granulated sugar, coconut. But this is more to taste :) Chill for 30 minutes before serving. Keeps pretty well in the freezer too :) Like the added touch of cayenne in this one though!
