The new JAS 39E equipped with the swedish-only version of the MBDA Meteor will be one of the most capable (beyond-visual-range) air-to-air missile systems in the world, when this new aircraft is up and "running". Sadly, with our current defense budget - and the fact that those Meteors will cost us roughly $2.7m (22m SEK) each, we won't have more than a few. Add to that the fact that the new JAS 39E will cut the number of operative aircraft to 60 in our 2 (yes, two) still existing air wings. Out of those 60 JAS 39E, I don't expect more than 1/3 to be at full operational capacity when all is said and done. Sweden has a proud military aviation history (not just aviation, 20th century military of all branches) post World War 2. In 1964 we had 20 fully equipped (more or less) modern air wings spread across the entire country - including a top-of-the-line centralized ground-to-aircraft command system and a comprehensive public road airbase system (for wartime use) stretching from north to south. The J29, J32 and J35 and their A, S and what not-variants were all great fighters and/or attackers during their time(s). Of course not everything, in neither branch, was perfect, but still pretty impressive considering this tiny northern european state having the 4th (might've been the 5th) largest air force in the world. Fun fact: We also had the first anti Saab 29 Tunnan (The Flying Barrel) Saab 32 Lansen (The Lance) Saab 35 Draken (The Dragon) Saab 37 Viggen (The Thunderbolt) Saab 39 Gripen (The Griffin) *To a certain degree Each of these mentioned above were, when compared to any other nation, a fully competitive aircraft in its day and age - at least in regards to what role they all had: defending Sweden by taking off from within our borders and operating across our own skies and in our general vicinity/area of the world. Nowadays, swedish military technology and companies/military contractors are still some of the absolute best, especially in a few chosen areas. Our "Defense" Forces, however, are not even a shadow of their former self. More like a rapidly fading whiff or a notion of something that once was. The citizens of Sweden are generally (statistically) pretty pissed about our politicians leaving us with a military with the operative capacity of a corporate paint ball team, but many seem to be ill-informed as to what has really been going on - and is currently going on. Going back to a cold war military with a cold war doctrine now would be stupid and inefficient, but the manner and insane speed in which our military was rendered completely flaccid (generally starting roughly around 1996, but escalating from 2000 and onwards) by our politicians is almost unbelievable.
Well you're predicting the future and not going by facts, the airforce said that if they only get 60 Gripen E they have to save some C variants. They are still in talks about how many they will recive + we are going to spend a few 100M dollars on the military in the near future.
Draken and viggen were beautiful jets. Way ahead of their time. Gripen is not as beautiful but an overall better fighter. Small but vicious in a dogfight. Outperformed American fighters at red flag
Love the canard work during landing, this plane can land within 400 meters give or take without any thrust reverser system, on landing the canards turns forward (automaticly) as soon as the front wheels touch the ground and then two brakes flips out in the back aswell. Awesome design to meet the Swedish Air Force very tough requirements.
To be fair to the yanks they got one plane who got shot down 8/10 times by gripen in redflag it's called f22 raptor. Now consider our gripen cost 1/4 of thath thath is 4vs1 ratio vs 8/10 kill score thath does not put you on + // Regards Sweden
iThe JAS 39 Gripen is much better than the F-22 to adapt in unexpected combat situations, as it is able to attack both air, land, and sea targets. The F-22 doesn't have any air-to-ground or anti-ship missiles and is therefore inferior in a matter of fighting new enemies. If the two fighters would combat each other, the result would most likely be the same due to the Gripen's superior armament and long-range weapons. Final result: JAS 39 Gripen is victorious.
Big respect to the SAAB JAS COMPANY on developing and producing this montrous fighter jet that gives the US ,& NATO Air Force a big head during the military exercise...it seems that the American technology had a tough time to beat this small but terrible Gripen fighter.. only F-22 raptor had the strength and capabilities to beat Gripen in a BVR COMBAT scenario and nothing else can...

Red flag is 2 week air show next to the casinos of Las Vegas. Sight seeing near the desert, seen some of the old aircraft and walked into a cargo plane on the ground and an old f111 in the air. It's an air show with someone on the loudspeaker. Admmison is free.
The Gripen is the only aircraft in the current generation that embodies the lightweight fighter role like the F16's and Mig 21's in older generations. Not every nation needs heavy fighters they might be a small nation or need many platforms at an affordable price. Also the Gripen project isn't as badly run as the Eurofighter and F35 projects where you pay a premium for bureaucracy. The Gripen is sort of a multi-national project but instead of a conglomerate SAAB chooses the best components to put in the aircraft and this cut's cost and raises quality.
What's wrong with being proud? It's a very sexy looking aircraft and I believe has a good record. Might not be the best, I dunno, depends on what criteria you use, but it certainly has a good lineage and can hold it's own with the rest.
Very nice aircraft. Too bad the US went stealth crazy, not as manouverable. Luftwaffe Typhoons beat the snot out of F-22's in Red Flag Alaska. Nice to see the Dutch F-16's in the background. Must have been a great exercise!
Joseph565112 The stealth technology that the US is having in all their aircraft is too far ahead of its time. Right now, the stealth technology that the F22 and F35 has really isn't neccesary for their tasks. They trade off manouverability, cost effectivity and weapons compatibility with a relatively useless stealth design.

Now it's all about slower, stealthy aircraft and sensor fusion. What little we know about next-gen stealth bombers, like the LRS-B, indicates they've expanded upon this notion...the bigger the bomber the larger the antenna array..the farther out it can see enemies and even engage them Also the USAF announced this past week that it's consolidating all long-range forces into the Global Strike Command. This is important. Once complete it means five men (including the president) are all that need to be consulted before launching a strike, whether its dropping food aid or a B-83 nuclear weapon.

If we in sweden had the same amount of money as USA for defense we would have 12000 Jas Gripen. The USA has 3000-3800 fighters. We are about 2-4 times more efficient with our money and resourses. Up yours USA!

Rikard Nilsson Well, they try. They tried to copy the F-35 with the FC-31..that was a face palm moment. Ancient MIG engines. Horrible design. The pilot had to almost engage afterburners to keep from losing altitude while making a simple turn..bled that much energy due to poor design lmao

Must feel bad to know a country of nine-million people have managed to build a superior fighter. Then again, with the poor training and low requirements that American pilots hold it really doesn't matter what plane they fly.

i love the gripen, but it actually has some american parts in it. yet mostly cause it´s cheaper to buy for us i guess. but i still love it it´s really beautiful
I am agree with skibdattles: the F-22 its more that common avionics,radar, digital fly ware, sensors and others tecnical enginiering, example: thrust vectored engines, internal weapon bay, angle lines and tecnical paint, but I think that USA should forgot by a moment the stealth focus and think in upgrade good proven combat platform or re-enginier it as F-14, A-10 as does Rusia with Su-35, but never learn.
Ive only read that gripen and f22 fought on the same side. and when i googled it I only found this information on a few webpages that never mention the source of this information. Could anyone please point me to it, since id love to read about it if its true.
Long range ain't nothing gonna touch an F22, up close and personal, different story. They've shown that it's equal, not better than 4th gen fighters. Course you still gotta get close. Then again, if they can afford to put up 10 of theirs to 1 of ours, we run out of missile's before they do.

Saab has used a clever spinning reposition in the nose oft the jet which allows the angle tob be increased significantly. This gives the Gripen the ability to take a shot from beyond visual range and then turn 90 degrees in avoidance tactics, while still providing mid-course updates fort the missile fired and keeping situational awareness high in mid-combat, with new missiles that have extreme ranges like the MBDA Meteor. The Gripen NG could fire at enemy at extreme range and then effectively hide from enemy radar and infrared tracking systems used on other types of fighters while still guiding ist missiles. This development, though relatively minor in cost, provides a major benefit to the new series of Gripens and is one of the ways it can maintain relevancy when compared with its gears.
Dont get so focused on the generation and the F-22 isnt unbeatable. Its a good aircraft but not unstoppable... Plus who has said that the Gripen was "better" he just claimed that the Gripen did better against the F-22 then any other aircraft participating. Finally I dont belive any of you to have the information to claim anything about the preformance during Red Flag and even if you guys do a person with that information doesnt post it on RU-vid... -.-
1) The gripens weren't actually flying against the f22, 2) If they were, the scales are tipped so the blue side will win no matter what, 3) Then still we'd never hear any (real) results as they are classified as far as i know. And to all the kids that go "Yay, the plane is built in sweden, i'm from sweden, it's the best, we're awesome!!!!!!" Just calm down, you're embarrassing.

HONEST Comparison: In an air-to-air fight, the JAS 39 Gripen is superior in armament and victors in causing destruction. However, the F-22 is faster and therefore superior in a hunting occurance. Before the battle would begin, the Gripen would not be able to detect the F-22 due to its stealth capability, but the thermal sensors of the JAS 39 could discover the Raptor at short distance. The two combatants are equal in maneuvarability.
What? The F-22 has the most kills of each aircraft at red flag...F-22 was 242 kills and 2 losses due to carrying external FUEL TANKS! It dominated everything at at everything...GUNS,BVR,WVR you name it

You know, when you think about it it isn't so much about the maneuverability, speed etc of the plane. It is about intelligence. Next gen planes will rely on information networks to identify targets and threats more than on their built in radar. Hell, they'll even be able to fire a missile towards the general area of a target and hand over control to a helicopter or drone to guide the missile to the target. Show me how a plane interfaces with the rest of the war machinery network and I might get an idea of its real capabilities. Information is key, not just performance figures. War is not a Top Trumps card game.
