Actually, they are not. They based italian Isotta Francini petrol aircraft engines with four valves per cyl. European havent done lot of two stroke diesels besides Junckers Jumo and british Napier Deltic(which are based to Junkers license in beginning) opposite piston engines. And imo as you can see also in here, four stroke turbo diesel rumble is so much more beautiful than two stroke diesel screaming.

The Napier Delta diesels were 3 banks in a Y configuration, 18 cylinders, 36 pistons in a 6 crankshaft design that was good for power but terrible reliability and they only lasted a fraction of their design life. The USN used them in the river boats and they were terrible.
@mikesullivan8352
@mikesullivan8352 9 лет назад
The Napier 'Deltic' engines were not a Y configuration but a Delta cylinder configuration, ie , with a crankshaft on each of the 3 corners of the cylinder banks . The 2 stroke diesel engines being of an Aluminium construction gave a tremendous power to weight ratio over the normal fast patrol boat engines of that era and were designed to be easily exchanged should an engine failure arise , the exchanged engine then being repaired at a land based facility . We used the Napier Deltic engines over here in the UK in the locomotive of the same name , these were used on the East coast rail route from London to Edinburgh. 21 of these locos were built and served the service well for over 20 years , six of the class are preserved and run regularly on preserved railways and main line 'enthusiast special' workings to this day .Cheers .
@michaelgaley9532
@michaelgaley9532 8 лет назад
+Mike sullivan The Deltic were used in the PTF "Nasty" class and were turned over to the Philippine Navy due to they having an oven big enough to swell the block to change cylinder's to the engine. I saw the last one at Little Creek Amphib. Base in VA. back in 1978 I was an EN2 US Navy assigned to Special Boat 21.
@mikesullivan8352
@mikesullivan8352 8 лет назад
+Michael Galey ,True enough about the ''Nasty' Class ' Michael , I beleive they were made in Norway for a few of the worlds navy's as a fast patrol boat , the Royal Navy here in the UK used the Deltic engines in another type of fast patrol boat and the RAF had some for Air Sea Rescue purposes . I read somewhere that the US Nasty class boats did some sterling work in the Vietnam war , and were used for recce misssions and search and recovery ops as well as Marine support work . The Napier Deltic engines were high maintenance cost items , but on the Railway We had the facillity at Doncaster Railway Workshops to turn the locos round quickly if failureoccoured , with both engine units replaced in a day on many occassions, recon engines being available from their own rebuild facillity .Mny of the Deltic class loco's covered over 4 million miles in their short 20 year lives !

those are fuel injected diesels. as it warms up they smooth out with idle. When cold starting diesels have alot of blow by (smoke) because to much fuel is barely being lit as it blows thru, as temp changes and moisture in the fuel lines disappears with it and idle sounds somewhat normal. Cold the oil is thick, inside the engine theres resistance.

Interesting point you make. My father was a Chief Petty Officer (RN) engine room artificer on MTBs in WWII in the Mediterranean. He used to tell of needing repairs to one of the V12 Packard engine in his boat and calling in to a US Naval base in Sicily, I think it was. Called in to see if he could get a replacement for a cracked manifold, but the Americans told him they couldn't supply spare parts...but could give him an entire new engine. They just lifted out the old engine and replaced it with the new one in an hour or two. He always remembered the "can-do" attitude of the USN compared with the reams of regulation required by the RN. My dad said it was the only time they ever got an engine with complete set of tools, spares and operating manual, which he kept. My younger brother, just turned 75, still has the manual for that V12 Packard.

The Americans used 3 Packard gas v12 engines.. But these have a few problems. At full speed they burn 200 gallons of high octane av gas and hour. Av gas is expensive..very expensive. Av gas is highly inflamable.. so getting hit when you are carrying 800 gallons of high octane petrol is very dangerous. So most countries opted for diesel engines. The fuel is safe...and the the engines can be tuned to run on low grade marine fuel. Diesel engine are more fuel efficient so the range improves dramatically. And finally.. the old napire diesel engines had no brains in them( electronics) so emp will do nothing to them.. The other advantage is you could inject diesel into the exhaust and make smoke.. and old defence but still works..
