They are "helped" rather by the fact that Swedish is a mandatory subject in Finnish schools... Unfortunately so. I mean, even most Swedes probably agree that this is insane? So do most of the Finns, but democracy doesn't work on this issue due to corruption supported by "Swedish speaking money" as we call it. And by the way, there are only a handful of Finns who speak Swedish as their primary language and almost none that speak only Swedish and not Finnish. Swedish language plays a very minor role in Finland, in reality. Not much bigger than Finnish in Sweden.

+Jorma Jurrila you do realize that aid and help are synonyms, correct? And yes, I am well aware of the fact that Swedish is not very widespread in Finland (heck, I even know that the only two regions in which there are more speakers of Swedish than Finnish are Pohjanmaa and Ahvenanmaa. Yes, I even know the Finnish names [better than I know the English names tbh]). But still, as a Finn who is required to learn Swedish in school, you are more likely to recognize Swedish words and grammar than someone who has never studied the language (even if you can't speak it. You're still aided by the fact that you've studied it.)

All Finns study Swedish at school, atleast the basics. And Swedish is the first language for some 5% of the Finns.

And majority of us passively boycott it.

I'm not really sure if that's true, but Swedish, Danish and Norwegian are all North-Germanic languages and similar enough so that they mostly understand each other. Icelandic is also a part of that language family, but it's not that close to the other three. Finnish on the other hand is a Uralic language (along with Estonian) so it's not even close to the other four nordics. By the way, as far as I know only Sweden, Norway and Denmark belong to Scandinavia. Together with Inceland and Finland they are the Nordic countries. :)

Finno-Ugric. Not Uralic. There's a big difference. In other points you are right. EDIT: Or is it Fenno-Ugric? Damn I never remember that.

Quiwi Lin Lisolet I think the bigger term is Uralic languages, and Finno-Ugric languages is a sub group belonging to Uralic languages. I'm no expert, but this is how i understood the matter. I could be wrong. ^^'

The difference is actually on the Uralic-Ugric part. Ugric languages are way different of Uralics. That's why Finnish is so different from Russian for example. The Finno/Fenno part is a subgroup of Ugric languages, so for that part you are right.

Finno Ugric is a part of Uralic languages. There are two parts of Uralic languages, the other is Samoyedic.

Polish is in indoeuropian languagegroup. Finnish is in finno-ugrian language group. No relationship.

@@cinderellaandstepsisters Even if the languages are entirely different and come from different families they can still sound somewhat similar at times. Many people think Finnish sound similar to Japanese and many Spanish speakers think Finnish is pronounced very similarly to their language. Even though these three languages share nothing in common pretty much and aren't related.
