Canadian pianist Joel Hastings plays Variations on "Mein Junges Leben Hat Ein End" (My young life has an end) by Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck (1562-1621).
When J.s. Bach was a teenager; after arguing with his parents, he would lock himself in his room, put on his headphones, and listen to Sweelinck really loud.
This is one of the most beautiful melodies of that era, and Sweelinck's variations are the among the most beautiful of his compositions. Mr. Hastings gives a truly moving and sensitive rendition. Bravo!
I can't believe Sweelinck sounds so well on the piano. There's simply got to be more pre-Baroque stuff played on piano on RU-vid - seeing your performance the taboo against this practice should never have existed.
I LOVE the interpretation! It’s immensely compelling, and the counterpoint is made all the more thrilling with the dynamic swells and ebbs of the piano.
Why can't pianists play more of the pre-piano repertoire? Do we really need another recording of the Chopin Etudes or the Beethoven sonatas? This music deserves to be heard on piano. How about 3 or 4 recordings of the complete keyboard music of Sweelinck?
While I agree with your statement in a way, I think that it you would be better off just listening to recordings of this music on authentic instruments (Organ, clavichord, harpsichord). The piano is not built for this music, and pianists play these pieces (when they do) with wrong and unauthentic fingering and articulation
@@rrkdudas6848 ... and why should we care about "wrong and inauthentic fingering" if the music sounds well? The performer makes no claim of trying to convey Sweelinck's intentions, he's just trying to make music.
@@joannescouchet7038 we should care because this kind of music requires a specific set of approaches, otherwise it sounds like nothing, just a bunch of simple harmonies and scales
I can't see how something as beautiful as this can be dismissed simply because it may not be articulated the way we think the composer intended. We are fortunate enough these days to be able to listen to performances on period instruments we guess may have sounded and been played a certain way. But we can also experiment with new sounds and perhaps indulge in fantasies about how composers from the distant past would have written for the wonderful instruments we have today. We can enjoy the best of both worlds.
very nice. I agree with the other commenters about hearing more pre piano music on the piano. It must be done with out the typical piano technique (loud & fast) It would also sound great on a square grand with a non-equal temperament.
Always a pleasure listening to your posts.Your enjoyment of playing really comes through in your work. You make it look effortless. You are truly gifted. Thanks for posting. Please keep them coming.
