Sweep Picking Tutorial - The “Missing Link” To Sweep Picking Mastery

Everybody wants to sweep pick fast. But playing fast is only one element of sweep picking mastery.
The “missing link” few people practice is: sweep picking cleanly without sloppy string noise.
There are 3 causes of sloppy sweep picking:
- Notes bleeding together when you play arpeggios (this one sounds awful!).
- Open strings vibrating, creating sloppy noise.
- Excess rotation of your pick as you change from ascending to descending sweep picking. (The more your wrist moves, the greater the chance of sloppy noise.)
You are about to learn “thumb muting” - a new way to mute sloppy string noise that makes sweep picking feel easier and sound better.
Watch this sweep picking video tutorial and practice the drills in it to improve your sweep picking.

We want to go fast all the time that we forget the physics involved in generating the sound. Tom is very good at isolating the root causes. Thanks!

Very interesting trouble shooting. Also I didn't know you could mute with the thumb. Need to learn this😍 Now back to the step 7 in the beginners guide on how to sweep pick ;)

This is an amazing technique. It took me a while to get it down but once I did, it was life-changing. Thank you so much Tom! Do you need to worry about changing the pick angle to 45° like most people do? It almost seems easier not having the 45° angle on the pick. And lastly, I can play really fast now going from the low E string to the high E string but when I reverse it, I seem to struggle going from high to low. Is this normal? I am fairly certain my technique is right but who knows. Thank you brother this is such a great technique!!

I don't angle the pick 45 degrees (this is too much and it causes the pick to scrape over the strings, especially on the wound strings). I angle the pick about 30 degrees. About struggling to go from high strings to low strings, isolate the picking motions (don't fret any notes - only practice your picking hand movements, like this: tomhess.net/Video-About-How-To-Increase-Guitar-Speed ) this will help to solve this problem.

I'm trying to get this technique right, but I can't seem to figure out how to do a downstroke without muting the string I'm playing with my thumb (or worse, accidentally playing a false harmonic). If I lift my thumb up in an effort not to mute the string I'm playing, the lower string (in pitch) now isn't muted anymore because my thumb is now lifted.

The issue I have with thumb muting is that each note ends up being played more like a pinch harmonic.

I notice Tom talks about thumb muting all the time, not necessarily just for sweep picking. I find I have to use several types of right-hand muting to accommodate various picking alterations. Wondering, do any of you find that you can thumb mute like this all the time, regardless of picking patterns? I find that specifically for alternate picking with string skipping, especially if the string skip is just for one note or in some unsymmetrical pattern, that the thumb muting is very hard to maintain, almost impossible because I can pick about 5X faster with my wrist more bent, using a ulnar-radial rotation than I can with my wrist going side-to-side. Not sure if this is physiology or just a matter of repetition of movement/practice. Of course, then I see MAB doesn't even mute his strings and they don't ring when he's playing high-gain and fast as fu**. Not clue how he makes that happen. I guess he's evolved to the point where he can mute with his mind. lol

Yes, I use thumb muting for all lead guitar playing all the time. That said, there are different techniques for muting that work too. Another good technique is to use the heel of your palm to mute (it works on the same principle as thumb muting). The idea is simply to have something resting on the lower (in pitch) strings, so you only hear the strings you are playing. I prefer thumb muting because it's more consistent and keeps my hand in a better position for fast playing. If the thumb ever has to come up, simply put it back down as quickly as possible (and during fast string skipping licks, the thumb is not up long enough to allow for string noise).

@@tomhessmusiccorp Hey Tom, thanks for all the great information and videos. I just wanted to comment here since you guys are talking about thumb muting and say I would be really interested to see a video about it. Going over how to hold the pick, what area of your fingers it touches, the picking direction with respect to the strings, which area of the thumb mutes the lower strings, if the thumb is bent or stays straight, and how to avoid muting the string that you down picked (or even multiple strings that you want to ring out).
