"sweep picking is the thing that every rock player THINKS they want to learn" haha so true. Either until you see how difficult it can be or until you get too old to care lol
Yup, some people never bother to learn it because they don't listen to that type of music. But in the back of their mind they kinda want to learn it for bragging rights 😅.
generally leans more towards modern metal than say, classic rock, where you're more likely to find classic shredding than sweep. but both techniques are good to master.
Tyler, you are definitely making the greatest internet source of information to learn guitar, I'm really thankful for all your effort! I got Guitar Super System 1 and 2 back at Black Friday and it's my go-to for training and warming up before playing and recording! Thanks man, keep shredding \m/
*HELPFUL TIP:* For the 3 string sweep (8:50) Tyler uses his middle finger and his ring finger for the B and G string respectively. This might not work for you. Try using your middle finger and your index finger for the B and G strings respectively on this sweep. It seems weird, but if you're struggling with your left hand, this might be just what you need. I tried Tyler's approach when first I started out sweeping and my fingers would just not speed up. Tyler's approach is NOT wrong, but it may not be the best for you, as it didn't work for me. I learned this approach by watching Brendon Small sweep. It works because of the natural angle of your hand being perpendicular to the fretboard. Give it a try.
Been playing guitar for 13 years now and have learned a lot on my own. I've been at a plateau and in a musical/ technique " rut " for the past 15 months or so, but this channel has helped me grow SO MUCH in just a few months.!! Thanks bro! Keep the videos coming!
Gapi P Because there's multiple types of muting going on at the same time and the temptation can be huge to play it fast (and sloppy) before you learn to play it well slow. Sweep picking isn't the easiest guitar technique out there unless you've practiced it a lot
I know it's a hard technique but the theory behind it is very simple. You just need to practice it a shit ton and chances are you'll never really be able to use it anywhere
That level of master guitar playing can only be achieved by the very gifted, or special-whichever you prefer to call the mentally handicapped... in Wayne’s case, he had the power of ----retarded x SWAG+drugs ² ÷ 420
I'm a self-taught musician and sometimes people will ask me how I learned or how I practice sweeps. So I finally looked up with a sweep is and it turns out that I kind of just do it naturally. Hearing it explained hit by hit almost makes me not be able to do it LOL
I Barre if it's descending and just let up on pressure after each note and pull my finger down one string. Odd motion but it works for a lot of the usual shit
With as crazy as my life is right now, I don't even have the time to go through the courses right now. But. I absolutely love your RU-vid channel, and can tell you're a really down to earth dude. So, I just bought super system levels one and two, and modern rock. Keep it up man. You're doing your thing, and you're doing it at a very high level.
How are you at it now? I’m exactly where you were 2 years ago haha, classically trained for 12 years and I rarely use a pick. Decided to tackle sweeping this week and it takes some incredible patience…
Modern rock guitar techniques is like actually the best. I have all you courses, except for the beginner one, and I love each one. Thanks so much you've been a big inspiration
I've been trying to learn to sweep for about a year and could never find any useful video until I had a look at your lessons and dude by far this is the best tutorial I've seen and I was able to pick up 2 string sweeping within half an hour and play it at speed. So thankyou for making the lesson :)
It's so nice to see a real guitarist who actually uses his pinky (unlike so many guitar hackers who play like they only have three fingers). Notice he plays one string per fret for efficiency of playing and ability allowing him to play with speed AND precision. Very refreshing!
Some don't need to use their pinky. That's like saying using your thumb is bad, or any other "it's not the right way" bs. It's all what feels natural to the player and what technique they can comfortably use. For example, to play the "Hendrix chord," Jimi didn't need to use his pinky as he had long fingers. I can't play that style chord without using my pinky. And what do you mean by "one string per fret"? Did you mean "one finger per fret"?
@@kimmohakala6099 blues doesn;t count tho.. It's rooted into three finger scales, all blues is defined by it, so it makes sense. not using the little finger in the other hand will surely have its consquences for dexterity of expression or possibilities this absence deprives the p[layer. not sure about the third man, I guess he is from Children of Bodom(?) - still metal is an offshoot of blues rock and in its simplest forms will have the same technical requirements. I play flamenco and classical and without little finger, that is simply impossible. it just won't be the same. Django Reinhard might be a good example how oinly two fingers could be enough if the aim is to somehow be able to play with disability.
First of all thanks for giving your time and skill to provide people like myself with free instruction. I will definitely give a thumbs up in appreciation. But would like to point out that your position on the neck, which seems arbitrary to me, means literally millions of guitars in the laps of millions of potential appreciative viewers/students are not cut out deep enough to allow your demonstrated left hand position. I was inspired and grabbed an acoustic just to try and found you were too far up the neck. Of course you can contort your hand but that would not be an entry level lesson. of course the fret spacing is tighter way up there but still seems like an oversight. I am not complaining beggars can’t be choosers just hope you see this input for your hopefully long and successful tutorial career. Once again thanks
Wow. I have searched for lessons online for weeks to get started sweep picking. The way you explain it combined with the examples make me want to learn.
The initial sweep pattern/example is what I've been trying to figure out correctly for a few years. Not that i sit for hours and practice sweeps but maybe the "strumming" motion I'm doing is holding me back rather than the "falling" both you and another video seem to be showing
I'm almost at the `medium range` from your examples, I've played guitar for a very long time but never tried sweeping until this week... covid project. Great tutorial, thanks for the exercises! Subbed!
well for some reason, I have watched a million sweep videos and still had no clue, but I watched this, and within seconds I was pulling off the 2 string one at maybe medium to fast speed... and I'm not completely sure, but that may have just been a compliment
thank-you sir! I'm gonna practice it everyday, all day! your awesome for giving away your input, and I'm truly thankful. I been playing 20 years I know the usual blues minor pintotonics, think I misspelled that. but really looking forward to getting on the road to broadening my horizons and skills. I know it will take time and dedication, but hey I'm used to that anyway with all the things I practiced over the years. thanks again!
when anyone asks me from where do you learned guitar my ans. used to be internet ! buy now I say MIW ! so glad this channel exist 🙌👏 but Tyler never stop making fun vedios too !🙏 fun is important during teaching !!
For me, I used to try and do metronome stuff, starting slow and what not. It helped a bit, but not as much as I'd like. I eventually forgot about trying to sweep, and the past year I've just been working on my raw picking technique in leads and rhythm, and working on keeping my fretting and picking hand in sync at higher speeds.. Since it's related to sweeping I guess, it's massively improved my sweeping without having actually worked on it specifically :p
Kind of weird how the ad that played before this video was all about how, "you shouldn't use youtube videos to learn the guitar." Well that is too bad.
Thank you for this! Definitely the most informative video I’ve found on sweeping. I will probably still have a difficult time learning it, but I learned a lot from watching this
I wish this video was uploaded long ago so I would have understood sweep picking more clearly.. But thanks for it anyway, even though I already know how to. You're uploading some good content lately , I remember you said that was your goal for the new year, so I know by the end of 2017 you would have even more success by then. Keep it up!
I have a question, after all these lessons and you playing guitar by yourself not making videos, do you have time at the end of the day? Do you have time to play games/watch movies or shows/anything other from guitar? How much time do you have at the end of the day? Thanks
i realise that you dont mute string when you play faster upwards, or am i missing some step there? it might be not clear because of camera angle as well, so just wanted to find out how you mute string upwards
I think at 49 and been playing off and on for 35 years. I find myself with out an instructor at the moment. I like his style of teaching. I think I’m going to get his courses. Steve stein is pretty good. But I’m going to choose this cat. 50 bucks a year. Sh17 in the 80,s that was 2 lessons 😆
Why is it that I've been wanting to do this for ages but this is the first video I've seen that has actually helped me understand the technique? Also muscle memory is a bitch at slow tempos; I keep switching to alternate picking by accident smh lmao!
Okay, I've been playing for some time now, so the first two exercises were straightforward (I know how to sweep). But DAMN! That finger-twister you pulled killed me. That third exercise is out of John Petrucci's playbook. Maybe I don't know how to sweep enough
I see that in the last exercise , instead of re-starting with a downstroke it starts with an upstroke and then the second note requires changing the pick’s direction on the next string.
At 08:53 I see that the picking switches between down and up plucking on the root note. However, I'm sure that down plucking is intended when you get back to the root note.
If you do not have the left hand and right hand coordinating together, the first few minutes of this lesson is going to be frustrating. So listen to the full video before you begin to practice along. After that you can practice along but it’s very important that you understand that it takes the two hands together to complete this sound accordingly
And just as amazingly important like he said in the video, use a backing track or Metronome. Very very important. It’s huge. Like my hands, very very huge
Sick vid! These are the same sweeps that are used in the solo to dethklok’s Duncan hills coffee jingle.. And in a lot of other solos too I bet. Great tutorial
theres couple type of sweep picking as my music teacher once told me. But hes not talking bout the shredding sweep picking even though it can be used for it
