Hi Richard and Julia, birdsong and nature, what wonderful sounds to wake up to! What a terribly sad story of Sweet Fanny Adams, it was very thoughtful that you visited her gravesite and she hasn't been forgotten. How very kind of Ian to let you use some of his land, that sounds wonderful, good luck! Looking forward to following the journey! Thank you for sharing, take really good care of yourselves, stay well! Much love Kathy x 💖

Excellent vlog! A little bit of travel, some local history, some farming. So nice to get out in the country and listen to nature. The background music is perfect. Hope we get to see more of Alton. It looks like a very interesting village. I totally agree with you Richard, we have a house in the country and most days all we hear are the birds and the cows next door. We can hardly wait for you to take us back to the country again. What a friend you have in Ian to loan you two the use of a bit of his land. Carry on...

What a great video. Glad you enjoyed the birdsong. I have a bad back at the moment and when we go for a walk Pete carries a fold up chair so I can sit for a bit and rest it. We sat in a wood yesterday and the birdsong was raucous but lovely. The story of Fanny Adams is so sad, interesting to see her grave. I look forward to seeing your progress on the field. We used to have rectangular metal buckets in the Royal Navy colloquially known as 'fannies.' They were well used in ships mess decks to carry hot water, and/or for washing the crockery. Their history goes back to the time of the gruesome murder. God bless the young innocent lass. Thanks for sharing your Easter adventure.

This was a great varied video. The morning in the field looked and sounded wonderful something to really make you appreciate wildlife. Julia is a natural on the tractor as are you and your skills will get better with time. It is a sad story about Fanny Adams but nice to see people are still paying their respects at the grave. Ian is super kind to allow you and Julia to use part of his field for testing out growing and I look forward to harvesting time.

Bought a tear to my eye when the lovely Julia put her daisy chain on the headstone. Thank you for sharing.

Ian was a great sport to let you drive the tractor, again! And, allow you to use part of his land. Love the tour to Alton but what a tragic story. What a decent gent Ian is. Will look forward to more Vlogs on Iansfield (pop. currently 0!). Nice views on Chalton and Alton; large landmark has gone with the demolition of the old Bass/Coors brewery . I must go and visit Curtis Museum again. Horrific story on Sweet FA. I did go past Iansfield gateway on Good Friday and wondered if you were there but did not see anything. Hawkley area is such a lovey area full of wildlife and gorgeous views. If you are still after places to visit recommend Upper reaches of the river Itchen beyond Winchester - thatched cottages abound! Chalk uplands to North-West of Alton - The church at Bentworth - v.interesting. Dunsfold and Dunsfold church in Surrey - you've probably been there already guessing!

Having lived in Alton for many years, there were parts of the story I didn’t recognise. Fanny and her friends were playing in Flood Meadows, I have never heard about her being decapitated. The source of Sweet Fanny Adams meaning nothing was from sailors likening their meat rations with what little of her remained. An incredibly sad story. It is lovely that locals raised funds to restore her headstone. Years ago it was barely legible.

Taking your point about buying a field, for over a year now a field has come up for sale in Sidlesham parish which would be great as a rewilding project and series of small allotments. There is a plot of 31 acres and a smaller plot of less than an acre. Perhaps this represents an opportunity to pool resources and crowdfund a community Jubilee wood/allotment/campsite that could be enjoyed by all for generations?

A small tip when driving a tractor, as you saw at the back of the tractor there is a mechanism for connecting various machinery and taking the power off the main engine Power Take Off (PTO), the frame work for carrying the various machinery is known as the the three point linkage. I noticed in the video the three point linkage almost dragging along the ground, so it's always a good idea to check the linkage has been hydraulically lifted before moving off. Apart from that Carry On Regardless - "you're approaching Strong Country"!

I don't know about tilling a field of grass, the clumps are just going to regrow even better now. Normally you would use a bottom plow and bury the grass deeply to prevent it growing back again. Then run a harrow over the turned over soil to break up any clumps prior to planting. Unlike some crops, wheat can't compete against weeds and grass very well.
@JuliaHartley
@JuliaHartley 2 года назад
Incredibly luckily for us Ian has plans to work on it more before we get back to the field. Plus, this patch is for the wild flower meadow rather than crops 🙂
