Yes to 'Ballroom Blitz', it rocks with a swinging snare (love playing that beat) and is My fav of theirs. 'Ballroom Blitz' "reached number one in Canada, number two in the UK Singles Chart and the Australian Chart, and number five on the US"
Sweet were known for their heavy bass and drums, and their soaring harmonies. In 1974, 75, and 76, they were competing with/against Queen for chart success.
Ballroom Blitz was a huge hit and a very campy, fun banger! Very Rocky Horror vibes on the vocals even though it predated that movie by a few years. DO IT!
This is the music my generation listen to on a Saturday night at the roller rink. It reminds me of -Drivers seat-sweat n tears -Hot child in the city Leo sayer -Fantasy-Aldo nova. -several tunes by the cars. -cheap trick This music is not only time stamped but also timeless. Great nostalgia!!!!
Big time at the roller rink! Old wooden floors from the 1950s. A night at the rink was something we got to do maybe 3-4 times each year and what a treat. But once I turned 16 someone built a more modern rink. I finally had a job and my friends and I skated every weekend looking for romance at the rink.
Just realized when I commented on Sweet or the Sweet and when I was a teenager. One of the first pop songs I heard was from a german band called The Rattles and they had a huge hit in scandinavia called "the witch". Might be interesting for you, if you haven`t heard it.
This song was the first synthesizer I ever heard and I had to find out what that sound was. That opening sweep of the resonance filter was pure ear candy at that time. Now 50 years later, I have a wall of synths and I blame Sweet.
Crackerjack! Found a batch of the coveted pencils online quite a few years ago, probably from the closing down of the BBC's studio in London! Gave one to many people at Christmas and everyone was stunned but couldn't get the smile off their face!
Fox On The Run was first recorded in 1974 on the UK Desolation Blvd, then in 1975 as a single and the Desolation Blvd US version which was different from the original and more radio friendly.
Glam rock if it needs a genre. Yes, I’ve always thought it had the “I” wanna rock n roll all night” feel to that tone of voice. BALLROOM BLITZ for sure!!!!
Followed them right from the start, "Funny Funny," "Co Co," "Papa Joe," etc. I have seen Andy Scott's different versions of the band over the years, and he is still out there keeping the music alive to this day.
Well… I just Subscribed to you channel guys!!!, I think you deserve much more subs!!!. By the way, almost all the music you guys are and you had reacted… I lived it!!… well, I’m 64 Y/O so yeah!!, you can imagine LOL 😂 I danced with , I skated rolled with, I felled I love with girls in my prime times with all that music and I even dedicated many of them to many girls LOL 😝. You are doing a GREAT JOB, allowing, with your reactions, many young people out here to get to know all this wonderful music from the 70’s, 80’s and early 90’s. THANK YOU!!!
Great reaction. This lp was a breakout lp in America. Prior to this they were mostly known in Europe. Check out Sweet FA from this lp. Great rocker and great guitar. Underrated band on their influence and innovation. Recommend entire lp. Follow-up lp Give Us a Wink also great. Band fizzled in early 80s after tragic injury and health issues of lead singer.
Yes!! Please do Ballroom Blitz!! The song got a bit of revival when it appeared on the Wayne's World movie soundtrack, but sung by Tia Carrere. Sweet's original version is more guitar oriented.
Wooohhhhooooooo - thank you so much. My all time favourite song. FYI the original Desolation Boulevard was a UK/Australia release and had a much grittier version of FOTR as it was originally an album track - not a single. The original DB had Man With The Golden Arm - the later USA release was more a compilation album to be more commercial. You have only just scratched the surface with Sweet.
There are two different versions of Fox on The Run. The version that you reacted to had more keyboards in the mix and was a hit in the states while the more guitar-oriented version was popular in the UK. Also, there were two different versions of the Desolation Boulevard album. The U.S. version was compiled from two Sweet albums in the UK--Fanny Adams and Desolation Boulevard (which had the guitar heavy version of Fox On The Run). As for Ballroom Blitz, it was also a hit for the band in the states. But before Ballroom Blitz and Fox On The Run were hits in the USA Sweet hit the top 40 with another track, Little Willy. You do need to check it out too. And I also recommend the track, Action, which was the single from the followup album to Desolation Boulevard. That album was called Give Us A Wink.
Desolation Boulevard is the third studio album by the British glam rock band Sweet, originally released in the United Kingdom in November 1974. Two noticeably different versions of the album were released: one by RCA Records in Europe, and another by Capitol Records in the United States, Canada and Japan. The RCA version contains the single "Turn It Down" and the original recording of "Fox on the Run." The Capitol version, released in the United States in July 1975, includes the band's 1973 hit single "The Ballroom Blitz" and the single version of "Fox on the Run." In the U.S., the album peaked at #25 on 25 October 1975.
This is the single version, which is a completely reworked version of the one that was originally on the European release of the 1974 "Desolation Boulevard" album. The album version is harder, rougher and more funky inspired.
Remember my parents buying this album for Christmas in 1974. just for the song The Sixteens as it was there first single from this album. Then Fox on the Run can't remember if Turn it Down was a single or a B side.
This was quality glam rock, bands with a strong teenage following, (but also broader than that - Love is Like Oxygen was an attempt to break away from that), aiming at the singles market, but with quality songs that have great nostalgic quality........but at the time if you were into Yes, Deep Purple and Zeppelin,,,,, this was a bit too much on the pop side.......but still could not resist dancing to it.
I have a soft spot for sweet when I left school way back in 1972 sweet was the first band that I listened to they were awsome amazing if you can check out block buster wig wam bam new York connection need a lot of loving there are so many too many to list here but sweet back in those days were glam rock but they shifted in to hard rock and they were so so good fox on the run is an absolute masterpiece R. I. P Brian Connolly mick tucker steve priest so sadly missed thank you guys
Sweet have some great rocking pop songs, but check out the song Sweet F.A. off the same album, if you want to hear some of the early beginnings of thrash metal
It was in the movie “Dazed and Confused” with Matthew McConnaughey from the 90’s. Stone classic, great soundtrack! Edit: the nanosecond I hit enter, y’all got it 😅
Andy Scott has said they recorded this Fon on the Run at Ian Gillans studio. also Scorpions recorded it in 75 in German using The Hunters as band name. "Fuchs geh' voran"
They had four huge hits spread out over the years, all cool songs including this one, Love is Like Oxygen which you did, plus Little Willy and Ballroom Blitz
‘Desolation Boulevard’ is my entire high school existence summed up in one album. I worshipped that disc. And Lex is not wrong in describing it as ‘punk-y’. This album was a departure from their earlier more ‘bubblegum’ sound (a music critic term, not theirs). There are several tracks that are more fast and furious like “Sweet F. A,” and “Set Me Free”. Do “Ballroom Blitz” next, but you really should get to every single track. There isn’t a single dud on the whole album.
There are 2 versions of Desolation Boulevard; the UK one was the 2nd of 2 LPs released in 1974, and included The Man with the Golden Arm, whereas the USA one was a compilation of both LPs plus singles. The version of Fox on the Run that you played was the single mix from 1975, which has extra synths compared to the original 74 LP version. PS You'll love The Ballroom Blitz!
Wikipedia-Fox" being slang for an attractive woman, the lyrics are apparently about one of the band's groupies; Bomp! called the song "a definitive hard-rock bubblegum record" and "one of the last glitter classics
The genre is Glam Rock. Try 'Action' next. They went heavier on the 'Give Us a Wink' album. They also had some B side recordings that were very influential to future Speed Metal bands. 'Set Me Free' and 'Sweet FA' are nothing like the A sides. Definitely worth a listen if you're digging deeper.
Yes!!!! Glad you're getting into them. DEFINITELY check out Ballroom Blitz, there's also a great cover by Krokus. Little Willy was also a pretty popular tune. Enjoy!!
Hey there ! Do check out this new release “I’ll Be There” by Jin, out tomorrow on OCT 25th, it’s a rock vibes song 🎸, his debut album “HAPPY” is out on NOV. 15 ! ✌🏻
“LITTLE WILLY” or “BALLROOM BLITZ” is your next go-to banger. Both were big hits. Both are fantastic! ALSO: You all need to hit GUIDED BY VOICES some time… greatest indie rock band of all-time. Largest catalog. One of the all-time greatest song-writers in Robert Pollard. (“Lizard On The Red Brick Wall” or "Space Gun” would be a great intro to the band… but they literally have hundreds of good songs!) Cheers!
Woo! Love this one, danced to this at Friday night dances as a young teen so long ago! Hope to see Love Is Like Oxygen! Ballroom Blitz was just as popular as these two, please check it out!
Great band with lots of hits. I think this was probably their biggest hit in North America, but in their native UK it's 'Ballroom Blitz' that's their most popular, and a much better song I think. Please take a listen guys!
I would have liked to see you use one of the videos for this as you can see them perform and they're usually singing along to the studio version anyway. Also, I would be surprised if this was their most popular, as I think Ballroom Blitz was more widely played, at least back in the 1970s. Also Blockbuster, Action, No You Dont are really good. Sweet were a glam rock band and some metal bands were inspired by them.
I see that Montreal licence plate in the back, where are you guys located ? I live in Montreal area, not downtown but a bit west of it. I always liked the drummer from this band, the drumming is great on that whole album !
I’m pretty sure this song was in Dazed And Confused. That movie had an awesome soundtrack. You guys should definitely do Ballroom Blitz. That was also a big hit for the band.
The verse and progression is somewhat similar to the Yardbirds’ “Shapes Of Things”. Not necessarily the chorus, but you can see simular traits amongst these two songs.
You guys should definitely try the original European album version; have always preferred that to this, the single version. I think this one was on the outro in Guardians 2. Ballroom Blitz is superb, but was not, again, originally on this album.
@@kevie1166 heh... nope... Class of '76 (middle school),. Was supposed to graduate in '80, but they said if I wouldn't come to school they wouldn't let me 😛 😀
The original version of " Fox on The Run" is on the British album of "Desolation Boulevard",a more raw heavier longer version, which is well worth a listen too,so,you can compare them both,I do prefer the original, their label,RCA thought it would make a good single record,if it was re-mixed,so it was,& it became worldwide hit of course
They're still going Laura, only Andy (guitarist) left of the original band but they're still fantastic "live", they tour the UK every Christmas and sell out most dates. Check their site for upcoming gigs, might be one near you, best of luck! R.I.P. Brian, Steve and Mick.
