You really need to see her Monterrey Pop Festival performance of this and understand the context. Not many people knew a whole lot about her and few had ever seen her live - she BLEW THEM AWAY. Just watch.

She sadly passed in 1970 at age 27 (yep, she was in the 27 club), tremendous loss to the world. Check out "Summertime" live !

Big Mama Thornton wrote and recorded "Ball and Chain" in the early sixties but her record label sat on it for years, only releasing her version after Janis Joplin tore the roof off with it at the Monterey Pop Festival. Another iconic Janis Joplin song is "Me and Bobby McGee", a song written by Kris Kristofferson. PS. Janis Joplin influenced Led Zeppelin. Check out "Since I've Been Loving You" for a taste of that.

You should listen to the Scottish ( Janis Joplin ) called Maggie Bell and her song called ( Penicillin Blues ) and her band called ( Stone the Crows )

As good as this might be, you should listen to this tune from the “Cheap Thrills” album with Big Brother and the Holding Company. It’s live as well; the best in my opinion and is a more fitting sound for the tune and her vocals. Very, very heavy. Defines rock blues at that time (1968). The other tunes you reacted to, Piece of my Heart, and Summertime (which you should also listen to from this album - Piece of My Heart was) were the tunes that made her famous along with Ball and Chain. You have started with the right Joplin tunes!

She never sang a song the same way twice. She died at age 27 in 1970. One of the 27 club. She could have sang the phone book and made it iconic.

As much as I would love for you to react to Janis's live video performances (seeing her perform takes it to a whole other level!), that was a freaking, phenomenal live version of Ball and Chain you listened to! .... Nevertheless, some LIVE VIDEO suggestions are: Ball and Chain (Monterrey Pop Festival), Cry Baby (Toronto), Work Me Lord (Stockholm), Get It While You Can; To Love Somebody; Move Over (Dick Cavett Show) and Maybe (The Music Scene).
