According to Janis in interviews ..she referred to style/genre as slow country blues, and rock.

Janis Joplin makes the song her own as she always does, but her version changes up the arrangement as part of its psychedelic overhaul of the tune. "Summertime" was written by George Gershwin in 1934 as part of "Porgy & Bess" and has been recorded thousands of times in the decades since. According to Guinness World Records, "Summertime" holds the world record as the most recorded song in history, with a total number of recorded versions of 67,591 in 2017. The list of artists who have covered the song also includes Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Mahalia Jackson, Sam Cooke, The Marcels, Herbie Mann, Ricky Nelson, Billy Stewart, Big Mama Thorton, and Sublime (as "Doin' Time"). I think the classic pop version of "Summertime" is the one by Sam Cooke. But the Billy Stewart version from 1966 resounds with a ferocious groove, blasting horns, and rapid fire scat singing like you won't believe. Check it out too.

Many people from many walks of life all think of Janis' version of the song as the definitive one. She was just that good. My favorite song of hers is a song called a Woman Left Lonely. It's worth a listen or hundred.

Yeah, after her death, just about everyone with a piece of tape or film of her live concerts tried to cash in (record labels releasing "live" albums included). Some of those performances were gems, but many of them were sub-par (bad audio equipment, her voice being strained at the end of a tour or long set, etc.). The original album releases and television performances tend to be her best and reflect the takes she wanted to get across. This band had "funk" overtones.
