Morrisette grew up in Cebu, another island province of the Philippines, where the native language is Bisaya or Visaya. It is somewhat related to the languages spoken in several Pacific areas, including Hawaii. As most children in Cebu, she was educated primarily in American English, but when she moved to Manila at the age of 14 to pursue her music professionally, she had to learn Tagalog, not only to communicate, but to sing Tagalog songs. Like many in Manila she speaks Taglish, which is a mashup of Tagalog (or Filipino) and English. She thinks in English, but daily she probably speaks mostly in Tagalog, or Taglish.

This is like a "West meets East" music concept. "Moon River" is a Mancini work, made an OST for the film "Breakfast at Tiffany's" starring Audrey Hepburn, while "Usahay" (Ooh-sa-high) ("Sometimes" in English) is an old romantic song in Cebuano language. Morissette was born and raised in Cebu, so that's her mother tongue. We can assume she has been listening to (and perhaps singing) this song since her younger years. What a nice arrangement to mash them up together in an "old-style" 50's or 60's music and accompaniments. I hope you also appreciate the beauty of vocal layering that they did as BGV's, Mori and her husband Dave. It gives me some "winter-y" feelings of the years gone by. 🥰 They included some behind-the-scenes in this video. She was talking to Dave in "Taglish" (a mixed of Tagalog and English), that's how we usually do in daily conversations, especially that Dave is half-American, half-Filipino. The vehicle that "interrupted" their video shoot is what we call a "tricycle", basically a motorcycle with an attached side car, a basic mode of transportation in provinces and rural areas in the Philippines. From these BTS, we can see what Mori is when she's not singing and performing, she's just a simple, friendly, down-to-earth lady with a bubbly personality. 🥰

One basic trick to correctly pronounce Filipino (Tagalog) words is to learn how vowels are pronounced. Each vowel is only pronounced one way, and each one enunciated even when the same vowel is written twice side by side. Always. A - ah (as in Aha!) E - eh (as in egg) I - ee (as in Lee) O - aww (as in awe) U - ooh (as in boohoo 😅) Simple, right? 🤭

Philippines and most of Pacific including Hawaii is part of the greater Austronesian languages group. It should be a race on it's own, if it hasn't been reclassified already. I read that her 1st. Language is English but I personally believe that Cebuano/Bisaya, English then Tagalog/Filipino. In that order.
Usahay is not tagalog but cebuano (her native language) fiy philippines has 170+ languages Cebuano is her first language second is english and tagalog is third 13:30 we called it TRICYCLE motorcycle with sidecar (it is use for transportation) If you want to ride it just wave your hand or just say Tricyccllleeeeee!
