Hey Chef John, can you make these with other types of potatoes- like yukon gold- the same way? Would places like Shake Shack (using Martins potato buns) be using sweet potato or others?
Chef John I made your BUNS! I used them on my food truck! I grilled it and added slow roasted pork with caramelized onions, thin provolone, chipotle mayo... They loved it at the farmer market sold out fast! Thanks for what you do. I have tried, cooked and used many ideas of yours!
I’ve made these twice...both were perfect. By hand. I’m addicted. I even bought a stand mixer because of these rolls. I’ve resisted buying a stand mixer for 50 years!!! But I’m besotted by this pursuit of soft, soft bread. THESE ROLLS were the gateway drug-I’m on to full blown brioche...
He makes fine food finely and funnily. I keep looking for the next and the next and right now it is 3 am and I just want to watch more recipes! This recipe sounds so wonderful....
I have made these buns at least ten times now, and they are fantastic. Truly my favourite buns for burgers and sandwiches, I've even made them smaller and served them as rolls. They always come out amazingly and I've gotten a ton of compliments on them. The sweet potato gives them such a warm colour, a nice hint of sweetness and earthiness, but doesn't really impart a strong sweet potato flavour - which I think is good. These are just a great, easy, all purpose bun. If you are on the fence about making these, don't be. This is probably the best use of your time I can think of.
I made these, and you were right, they were the hit of the party.. people still remember them and me of course, thanks to you...Much love from Laredo, Texas..
Made them, absolutely unreal! Out of the park! Great recipe, awesome taste, texture, visual appeal. Baking doesn't always work out here at high altitude but these were top notch, just like his photos in the video. Another smashing recipe by Chef John! Thanks so much, keep 'em coming! Made your strawberry jam, clotted cream, and cream biscuits this past weekend. Your slow cooker pot roast last week. Everything is stellar. Next up, your lamb shanks posted 13 years ago!
This is the second episode I have seen on this channel and I am ecstatic. I love watching cooking shows on youtube and now this show is already in my top favorites. Thank you for being so amazing!
Hello Chef John, I've been watching your channel and I love it.The way you talk and teach in your videos is priceless. Two days ago I prepared the Teriyaki burgers and they turned out amazing.Today I baked for the first time the Sweet potato Burgers and they are amazing. Never baked bread before.I was looking for a recipe in which I could use my new Kitchen Aid Mixer and I looked up your recipe,The only thing is I cut the doe the same size you did, but they grew medium size, like for sliders,I'm editing this two recipes and I will show them in my channel, letting everyone know it's your recipe and to follow you, Thank you so much.My ex-roomate was Cancer like you and he used to cook really good.
Chef John, the buns turned out great! Although I don't like orange sweet potatoes (too sweet), so I used Jersey (white) sweets. And, since I am at 4,100 ft, I lowered the temp to 375F and baked them an additional 10 minutes. I also didn't need all the flour; I had a cup left over. Yeah, "it's a dry heat" here in AZ, LOL. And, of course, I just HAD to have a hamburger on one of those buns (yum!). There's no way I need 16 of them in a week, so half went into the freezer, for those times when I don't feel like baking. That gave me a strange sense of satisfaction, LOL. Now I want to try out those sweet potato biscuits!
Chef John, you never fail me. I have succeeded in every one of your recipes that I've tried so far. You are informative, offering what works best in how the dish is made. Also, quite comical as you narrate 😅 Thank you for all your terrific recipes!
I didn't have any sesame seeds, but I sprinkle some dry parsley and some dry chopped onion instead it turned out great! my house smell wonderful! thnx chef John!
Made these today, they are absolutely perfect, before I make any new recipe I check this channel first, my son brought me a sour dough starter from his work that’s 19 years old, I’ll be using it with a food wishes recipe for sure. Thank you for putting these easy to follow, beautifully researched recipes out there for people to try, so far I’ve made 10 different meals from this site and they’ve all turned out perfectly, and are delicious. I take the credit at home but the real kudos belongs with the people responsible for doing the real work, thank you all.
OMG! They are so delicious. I used purple sweet potatoes. The bums looked so beautiful. my son ate 3 of them right after i removed them out from the oven. thank you so much for the great recipe. i will try to use gluten free flour next time.
+Jessica Fafa Heh heh hehhhh! "The bums looked so beautiful". You shouldn't call them "bums". They're just people down on their luck. Give 'em a break. Hee hee!
It seems I'm always a month, or eight years late to these parties... However, I made these today, and they are awesome! I didn't want to just do burgers for Memorial Day, so I decided that homemade buns, and a little razzle-dazzle would make me the Morris Day of Memorial Day! These will eat up a couple few hours of your day, between rising, fretting, rolling, rising, and watching, but in the end--well worth it! Chef John is the man!
Chef John, i recently found and subscribed- and I’ve now made these buns enough for two hands 😂 and my family loves them. Thank you for teaching me such a nice, delightful, easy recipe. My stepson doesn’t even like sweet potatoes but adores these buns. So. Many. Sliders. ❤️
I just made these buns and they were delicious! Slightly sweet, soft, but also a bit chewy. I breaded chicken tenders and added dill pickles and Chik Filet sauce. Very good.
I always make your fabulous hamburger buns, my family loves them, but these are a must do for this weekend's 4th of July! Thank you chef, perfect timing! By the way, every recipe of yours that I have tried turns out perfectly, thank you for sharing :-)!!
Chef John : I have made these delicious buns several times and we liked then so much that I no longer make any other kind! Today’s batch was divided into 8 pieces and then shaped into long buns. Perfect for roast beef, cheese and peppers! thanks again
They just cooled enough to put them in Ziploc bags. Ty So much!! Awesome recipe!!! I made 16 and the baked size was smaller then I expected but I'm using them for pulled pork anyway. Gonna call them sliders.lol. Wish I could post a picture. Ty again!!
I made sweet potato bread before but never thought of forming them into buns. Sweet potato bread makes really good french toast ya know chef John. Usually the day before we have a dinner that includes oven roasted baked sweet potato. Just cooked in their jackets/peels and I bake a few extra. After the extra taters cool off I store them in the fridge overnight, then scrape out the cold pulp from the peel. No fuss. No trying to peel and chop hard raw sweet potatoes to boil. That is about the only way I cook sweet potatoes is bake them. Well other cut them in one inch rounds, brush them with a little oil and cinnamon and BBQ them.
My daughter makes your recipes all the time - INCLUDING your hamburger buns. You have simply wonderful recipes. Thank you for all the sensational meals.
I made these a couple of days ago and they were great. So very, very good and easy to make They were just right for a hamburger. The best I've ever made.
That "cupped palm" technique is crucial, especially if you want to make lots of rolls/buns. I used to make hundreds every morning using that technique. The motion is very similar to using stress balls.
This video came in a good time. I have been exploring with burger recipes on my grill. I did the meat exploration, ingredients, cheeses and buns where next. A must try!!!
Thank you, Chef John, for this amazing recipe. I'd never made any kind of bread before, but these looked so delicious and amazing that I had to try them, and they turned out fantastic! Every bit as gorgeous as in the video, and just as delicious as they looked. Awesome recipe!
you dont really need the egg and butter. i simply using olive oil and trust me - the buns are tasting even better and they soft and airy. this recipe is great ☺
I know this is a less refined comment, but i love this channel. I discovered it yesterday and been watching for hours now. Is this what having a man crush feels like?
This is probably one of the best cooking channels on youtube. Good job, keep these videos coming, simple, to the point and really nice explanations. Thumbs up! Your regular hamburger buns where pretty much 10/10 in my books, so i'm giving this one a try!
Blimey, guvnor, they are goooood! The lightest buns I've ever made and I made a big one for my famous stottie burger (look stottie up, its NE England traditional bread ) Not only that but hooray...you didn't start the video with 'Hi Guys' and it wasn't all about some coiffured presenter...just the yummy buns!
Chef John, you are an amazing and incredible Chef. I am learning so much from you. Your love for teaching shows in every video. Thank you so much for sharing. 😊🌹🌹
